Biggest thing you would do differently if you were able to go back to your time at MHS?

I would like to politely, respectfully, but assertively stand up to the nuns when they were, I feel, abusing their positions of power, which, some of them did often. Some of them were quite unjust and at times, intentionally cruel.

Tell us about your memories of MHS, such as: secret crushes, embarrassing moments, funniest thing you did in high school (or someone else did), favorite hang out, etc.

All of Sister Jeremiah's Religion classes in sophomore year, she was a lunatic and the kids made the class a laugh fest, especially Tom Twomey, Brian Mannix and Sandy Sczepanik. Bill Klippel and Bruce Kasold had their moments in that class, too. Of course, my favorite memory of that class was Tom Twomey's "Bongo Congo" speech with "King Leonardo", "Itchy Brother" and the communist leader "Beeegee Raattt". ("I'm not sure how to pronounce it, Sister.") Not to be forgotten was Tom's fictitious recounting of his brother's luck with the slot machines, when 3 LEMONS came up! And the Halloween that his brother (Joe, I think) threw raw eggs at passing cars and one driver whose car he egged had a heart attack as a result. When Jeremiah asked him what his brother's response to that was, he told her that his brother ran home, went upstairs and "He cried, Sister!"
Another favorite of mine was in Sister Eugene's World History class when she asked, "Who built the Cape to Cairo railroad?" I didn't know and I guess nobody else did either so of course, we averted our eyes and hoped she didn't call on us, till "Joey W." as Tom Twomey called him (Joe Wynne) raised his hand, much to my relief, and answered "Cecil B. DeMille". I breathed a sigh of relief as soon as I heard the name "Cecil" since the heat was now off, until I heard Tom Twomey mutter "Cecil B. DeMille built the Cape to Cairo railroad...". The correct answer was Cecil Rhodes which I will NEVER forget as a result. It's probably the only thing I learned in that class. Years later I remember reading a book, "The Drifters" on the beach, all by myself, and coming across the name Cecil Rhodes in the book and immediately breaking into hysterical laughter on the beach remembering the event in Eugene's class. I'm sure anyone watching thought I was some kind of maniac, laughing all by myself.

Who was your favorite teacher and why?

Hmmmm, I liked Sr. Fides and Sr. Claver. I think Claver (Louise Dantzig) had a special connection to our class. I would have loved for her to have come to our 30th reunion, but, unfortunately she has dementia or alzheimers...very sad. Sr. Eugene was good to us when she had us for homeroom sophomore year. Sr. Mary Mark was nice (typing)and pretty "regular".

Who was your least favorite teacher and why?

Sister Consilio. She would ridicule the kids who weren't good in algebra/geometry, by calling them "boobs" and was extremely strict. Not kind, very intimidating. By the way, I was one of those kids who wasn't good in math. (Can you tell?) I hated it and felt like a dope until I went to college and discovered I really wasn't a dope in math, afterall.
One particular incident was the time Eileen Geller, (sorry Eileen) came into the classroom (I'm not sure if she knocked) and walked over to one of the kids and handed him/her a telephone message without addressing Sr. Consilio first and Consilio screamed at her "You IGNORAMUS!!" Now, really...was that necessary? I had never heard that word before and will never forget it or not associate it with Consilio.

What was your favorite subject?

I liked English and French.

What quotes can you remember from which teachers?

"Do you understand? How many understand?" "How many saw Ben Hur?" (Sr. Cleophas-Latin)

"You, MORONS!" (Sr. Jeremiah)

"That's 'Africker' in a nutshell." (Sr. Mary Margaret)

"If God had wanted your eyelids blue, He would have MADE them blue!" (Sr. Boniface to Gert Schinn)

"Exercise C is for the boobs in the other class, you will do exercise A." (Sr. Concilio)

What song was played over the P.A. each morning in homeroom before class?

I'm a blank on this one.

Did you ever get a demerit at Mercy? How many? For what?

No! Although, I almost got one from Sr. Eugene in 10th grade when I was wearing trainers (wires for pierced ears.) She called me a cannibal!

Where did you go for our Senior Retreat? Any comments?

Saint Gabriel's Retreat House on Shelter Island.
It was an amazing experience for me, it was a wonderful example of how priests and brothers are supposed to be and there was a sense of unconditional love and acceptance, and peace. I didn't want to leave. I remember waking up to music being played; Simon and Garfunkle's "Sounds of Silence". I also remember the nuns being there and my being very resentful of their presence, especially in our group sessions. This was OUR retreat. We weren't a bunch of juvenile delinquents prone to wild, uncontrollable behavior! It was so intrusive and untrusting of them. Who wants to open up with a bunch of nuns around? I also remember all of us on the bus, on the way back from our Shelter Island retreat, singing the songs that were popular at that time. (For some reason, I specifically remember Arlene Haddad singing "Hair"..."Gimme a head of hair, long beautiful hair...") We were all happy and were having fun...innocent, healthy, wholesome fun! When we got back to class the next day we were reprimanded by Sr. Julia for doing so!! I believe she said something about hearing us pulling into the school parking lot with the sound of singing, bursting from the bus. She thought it was not the appropriate demeanor for us to be returning from retreat in. HUH? What were we supposed to be doing, silently saying the act of contrition and doing some kind of corporal penance?

What's your favorite book?

Gone With The Wind, Rebecca.

What's your favorite movie?

Out of Africa, The Big Chill, Camelot

What's your favorite music?

What's your favorite smell?

The scent outside just after the rain, privet hedge blossoms, tearoses, christmas trees, almond paste, my grandmother's leber knoefle

What's your favorite taste?

almond as in marzipan
