Speaking of Keith Fariss' literary efforts reminded me of the Idylls, our literary magazine. Being a staff member, you would think that I would have had something in the 1978 issue. I didn't, in fact hardly anyone in our class wrote anything our senior year--except Bobby Haskins and Andy Trotter. I wrote a couple of maudlin short stories in '77 but nothing in '78. I have the complete set of '76 to '78 Idylls. I also have the '74 and '75 Images from CSJHS. How and why I still have them, I can't explain. My Linda Ronstadt photo disk, well...

Very sad news...

Richard Fleshman was murdered in the Salem Food Lion parking lot on Wildwood Road Tuesday.

Here is the news link sent to me by several classmates.

http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/160118

My heart and prayers go out to his beautiful family, he "lived for his children" as he put in his profile.

Sometimes I just don't understand life or fate.
How cruel it can be.

I just wanted to Thank all of you dear classmates who sent me an E-mail about Richard...I am very sad this has happened as I`m sure you all are. I work right around the corner from the Food Lion in Salem, and had no idea this was our dear friend and classmate. My prayers and thoughts will be with his family. God Bless

I am sick to hear about Richard's passing. My deepest sympathies go out to his precious family. I trust that he had accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, and I will see him again one day, and have the reunion in heaven! That being said, I hope everyone reading this is confident about where they are going after they die; and if not, find out NOW. We never know when is our last day on earth. God Bless everyone.

We're all saddened by Richard's death. I hope everyone will keep his family in their prayers. I love Betsy's idea about a donation to the family from our class. I think it's the best way to honor Richard and the children he obviously loved so much.

Congrats to Coach Deeds. I wonder if he told his son about the old schoolbus in Clifton Forge where they used to take the girls. I think I still have knots on my head from that class ring of his!

Man, I've been missing out on the old "message forum"..Just spent a few minutes reading through a lot of the old "posts" and thought I'd chip in a few things.

First off, the old King's Inn has been turned into condos...I actually bought one because I had to have a piece of the old place. My unit is right where they used to check IDs after you walked in the front door. Also, Brian Parker mentioned the old DJ there, what a crazy dude. I had some great times with him when I was playing there in '79 & '80 with Dazzle and Razz..His name is John Brown. He's still around and is usually at all of the big city events. He's at the Beatles tribute show at Elmwood Park every year. Great guy!

Just like all of you, I was totally shocked to hear about the recent passings of Paul Mustian and Richie Fleshman. I hadn't seen Richie since high school, but we used to car pool with Kelly Moles to JV basketball practice, since we were the only ones on the team that lived in Boones Mill. He was a good guy, always had a smile on his face and I was touched to see that so many people have donated to his childrens' fund. That was a great idea, Betsy!

I ran into Paul several times in the 80's & 90's. He'd come out to see the band play when we were in Richmond and he was always the same old Paul. A barrel of laughs..He will be sorely missed!

I also have some info on Dan Finnegan and Robert Englund. Dan died first, I think in the mid-80's. Not sure of the cause of death but I think it was a heart attack. I actually hung out one night with Robert in Dallas in 1995. I had gone out there for a Cowboys game and we hooked up. Man, it took me a week to get over that one....His sister called Steve Colston within a year of that to tell him that Robert had died...never got the whole story on that one either. I will try to gather some more information to post on the site. They were both good friends back in the day.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion and want to thank Betsy again for getting this whole website thing together. It has been a blast reminiscing and reliving our "glory years"...I took my 14 year old son to the Van Halen concert in Raleigh on Monday.

Everything came back into "focus".....

Nice reading some of the Posts - It's was short list of Roanoke Catholic High students who came over to Cave Spring (or back) - OK, I was Kicked out of RCH But that another story, others came for there own reasons - Ana, Mary, Joan, and myself maybe more, not all stayed as I recall maybe it was Joan and I who completed at CSHS? My Mom joined the RCH's Faculty for a few years (76-81?) - Poor Mike StepSHOE, yes I said SHOE, one of the notables in her book, she still get his name wrong today - where else can you have a class with 13 kids 7 guys and 5 Mike's and When my Mom was the sub - Help. Well who else spent some time at RCH? In-fact she sub at Cave Spring too - I recall one day as I was heading out for "Zero Period" she asked where is space number #58 at your school - Without thinking, or asking why, I said 2nd to last 1st row... Boy was I in for it for Tech D. class that day - sitting in the back of the class when Mrs. "B" came in (A.K.A Mom) as with most subs someone killed the lights in the basement class room - did not bother my Mom - she just waitedm they came back on - then, looked at me . . . and as asked the Girls 'You gals OK back there ... ' OOPS... That was it - She let them out for the rest of class - one free pass for red faces - Should have skipped that day - Was not thinking and anyone who knows my Mom - at all knows she one you just don't get something past her. She later taught at CVU and spent a week with the Vermont NG and return home with the 'Top Gun' award, Yes, If someone said 'Your Mom wears combat boots' - Yeppers you know my Mom. Who Else would buy (and install) a roll bar in my MG ... - Later she got her own MG and still has it today tweaked out for racing too . . .

Mike beat me to the punch on our mom's embarassing habit of showing up in class. She subbed in one of my math classes. Something about calling the teacher "Mom" is just wrong!
She also came in for one of the last day of school bus rides. Mike and I had a car by then but still. She boarded that bus with combat boots, a fatigue jacket and a vintage WWII helmet. Oh yeah, a big "you aren't getting away with nothing on this bus" smile.

The thing I wanted to talk about is cars. What did you drive and what did you want to drive. Mike and I started with '65 Dodge pickup with a slant six engine that you could not kill. Dad got it in a trade with some farmer. We drove it with a frozen radiator one time and almost no oil another time. We had to fix it ourselves--which taught us a lot about cars. One of the main things was to park it in gear with brake on. We lived on a hill and we had to retrive it from the neighbor's backyard a few times. I drove it in the Homecoming parade our senior year. It was the sophomore float with our brother Andy riding with a dozen of his closest friends. You can see a picture of it in the yearbook. My elbow is right there for all to see.

Andy eventually did that truck in. But not before he had a close call on Mill Mountain Road. He claimed the oncoming car didn't give him enough room. There isn't much room on that road. He sideswiped the chained link fence and peeled off the chrome trim on the right side (remember real chrome?) We went back to look for it and it was nowhere on the ground. We found it literally woven into the chainlink fence.

Mike was pretty savvy about deals. He bought a US Park Service Patrol car at government auction for $500. It had a Police Interceptor Engine and Positrac rearend. When you flipped the air cleaner cover over it sounded like a NASCAR engine but otherwise it was a quiet ride. With the engine and posi it could do some serious burnouts--with both wheels.

I didn't get my dream car until September after we graduated. A green '69 Mustang with a small block V8. I had a lot of adventures with that car before I headed north (a story with a sad ending). Does any one remember a Roanoke County deputy who was slightly overweight, always wore mirrored sunglasses (even at night) and always smiled when he talked to you (like the warden in Cool Hand Luke)? We called him "Officer Friendly". If you had a run in with him I'd like to hear about it.

More importantly, I want to hear about cars. the ones you had, the ones you wanted and the stuff you did with them.

Haha, this could be fun! Thanks for the idea Greg!
I flipped burgers at Kenney's for almost 2 years before I got my first...a 1976 Datsun B210 (that I got senior year).
It was a straight drive of which I had never driven before. My sister had a 240Z and took me to the hill on Knowles Drive by the Elem school and made me go up and down it for hours, I'd love to have a nickel for every time I stalled it out.
She picked out my B210 and she and my parents put $500 down on it as my graduation present, I worked to pay the rest. My sis hauled me up to Christiansburg and surprised me at Holiday Datsun.
Then the bigger surprise was when she handed me the keys and said I had to drive it home by myself down Cburg Mountain!
All was well, and it became the party car packing my girlfriends for weekend barhopping trips, the Sr. beach trip, college, moves to about 8 different places (you can pack alot of furniture into a B210 too)
I drove that car for 13 years before it finally gave out.
They don't make em like that any more!
I've had a bunch since, but never another like that one!

I've never had a car that I liked as much as my '69 Mustang. My Jeep Cherokee comes close. It has 230,000 miles on it and is still going strong. Anyway, the big surprise getting my Mustang was my dad. I needed to borrow $900 bucks from the bank(I knew my parents wouldn't pay for it). I went to the bank in Tanglewood Mall. They told me that I needed a co-signer. I figured that I was doomed. I brought the loan papers to my dad. He signed them without a word. I couldn't believe it. My car payment was $77 a month for a year. Can't get much of a car for that anymore.

I was and am still into cars. All through High School I had a black Dune Buggy (72 Super Beetle)and sometimes drove an ugly green Chevelle. I have fond memories of both. I kept the Dune Buggy (turned red)all these years until I sold it in 2007 to make room for another toy. My wifes rule is you must sale toys to buy toys. Now have a 72 Buick GSX clone. I am afraid my son is enjoying it more than I get to. I guess he will have a good car memory of high school too. I won't bore you guys with the many memories of flying on the many back mountain roads. Chasing each other etc. So far my son has shown more discipline - praise the Lord! Greg - I hope we do not bore the non car people to much.

Cars driven to school. I was so Lucky. I got to drive a 1970 blue maverick. A three speed with clutch that drove like a tank. I was glad to have it, it got me to school and other places. I have to confess, now I have a car I always wanted. A 1973 green two door BMW model 2002. I is great, only 63000 original miles with a/c and is an automatic. I seldom drive it since I am told it is a show car, but it is a dream. Wish I had kids, but glad I don't for I know they would ease it out of the garage when I wasn't around. Nice to hear about everyone's car stories. I just love this message center, brings back memories. Please KEEP them going.

Paul.. I am so glad to know that I was not the only one that owned a 1970 Maverick.. Only mine was white.. I had found it for only about $600 But, like alot of you My Dad decided that it was time for me to learn what a bill was. So he did co-sign for a loan for it... And I got the car on Monday, License on Tuesday and started work on Wed!!!
I think my payments were about $50 a month.. But then.. GEEZZZ!!! that was alot of money!!! I can't rememeber exactly how long i drove it.. BUT.. I do remember that Yolanda Davis was at my house and it was a Sunday and we were on our way to Wendy's to eat and i came around a curve on my road and there was a man in his car on MY side of the road.. I opted in a flash to try to pass him on his side.. But he cut back and nailed me in my front passenger's fender and pushed me up a bank. Parents called, cops called.. all that crap...Come to find out the man that hit me was "ONLY 95 YEARS OLD". I then went to a baby blue Gremlin... AND within about 2 months to having it.. the SAME man alomst hit me in Kroger's parking lot!!!
I have a 16 year old now with a learner's... You can bet I am not letting her read some of these stories!!!
I am glad to see that we DID make it thur high school driving!!!

Linda, you and Paul are not alone. Patti Lensch also had a Maverick. Not sure what the year was but it was baby blue. She and I hung out alot and it was a coin flip to see who drove depending on who had the most gas.
That was a tough little car too!
Patti where are you??

You mean to say no one is going to admit owning a Vega? I had a
'73 Lime Green Ford Torino. And Tim loved his Blue Toyota Corola 4-door. A buddy of mine had a Javelin. Shawver had a Jeep Willy I think he kept up on Cow Hill. Lindquist drove a '64 Maroon Mustang Convetible, Beautiful!

And I certainly remember McDade driving up Hackney Lane in his Dune Buggy Ride. Scott, did you also own another kind of Kit Car or something? I'd always yell for anyone else to come look so they could see it, too! Scott was holding tight, wind blowing - that thing moved...

Overby had a fast MG. Pacers, someone owned one, I remember seeing it in the parking lot - looked like a pregnant egg... Band used to have Pack The Pacer Contests. We had some Classics, didn't we?!! 57.9 a gallon was the going price for gas, too... I was set!

Burbo & Harmon are right-whatever was ours, we loved it and found a way to pay for it-even if it meant slaving for the $2 Min. Wage... Man, I loved Jimmy Carter: He gave us a Min. Wage incr. 3 years in a row... $2.10... $2.20. Full time, I could take a date to McDonald's on Apperson, a Movie at Salem Cinema, and put gas in my Mom's car for less than $12 - I had it all figured out!

Linda, how much was a Pizza? Couldn't have been much. Staple Food.

The Vega was a much maligned car. I had one in college in Florida. I bought it from the Chaplain I worked for in the Florida Guard. It was fine until I drove it to Vermont that winter. Florida "coolant" didn't cut it. The radiater froze, the engine overheated and I learned all about blown head gaskets. Aluminum cylinder heads are never the same after that. I gave it away after it blew again. The Vega certainly wasn't a Mustang, but it was no where near as ugly as a Pacer. I think there's a Pacer pictured in the yearbook. The Pacer and the Gremlin were the worst automotive jokes of our time.

Hey everyone,
Well my first car was a 1972 Ford Maverick, my Dad paid $500 for it and I had to make $50 dollar payments till I paid him back, I worked at Long John Silvers at the time for $1.25 per hour so it seemed as if it took forever to pay him back. I loved that car! I didn`t get it till after graduation so durning high school I walked alot, or got rides from Betsy, Laurie(Bug), Terry, I don`t remember Denise driving, but somehow we got where we needed to be.I just remember having lots of fun with my friends.
Happy Mother`s Day

Christ, was I the only person in high school with a PINTO!. Bright red and everyone decorated it when Dorothy and I got married in the mock wedding. I had to drive that thing home, ALONE! That was a sight.
I put 188,000 miles on that "Death Machine" before I finally traded it in, in 1985!
Oh yea, upgraded to a Ford Escort, that didn't even have a radio in it! Four speed of course.
Now my toy is a 2002 Harley-Davidson Electra-Glide Standard.
Linda, I saw a Gremlin the other day and just had to laugh.
Ah, the memories.

I had a 72 Grand Torino Sport, lite blue with a dark blue top and factory mags, one of those suite case 8 track's mounted on the floorboard with a boosted and jensen speakers. That was a good car, in the winter I had Dunlap studded radials and a full tank of gas and only got stuck once. I've owned alot of cars since but now I drive a Bronco2 1988 model and don't want a car payment.

WOW.... Rob... You mean to tell me that there are still Gremlins alive!!! Now that is scary.. I Google searched a picture of one like i had to show my kids.. I thought my son would pop laughing... I guess that it did not help that I described it as "baby blue with black racing stripes"... I think it was the word "racing" that put him over the edge...

Brian... I actually have a menu from Pizza Hut from back then. You could get a personal size thin crust pizza for 99 cents. A large Supreme, that is now about $16 was $4.99!!!
There was a "meal deal" Large Supreme pizza, 4 salads and 4 soft drinks all for $12... Now I would guess that would be about $35!!!!!
I just want to go back to what GAS prices were then.. Do any of you remember what they were??

05/11/08 06:15 PM #130

Hey Greg - I guess you weren't the only one that had car memories!

Cars are such a big part of our culture. My family also had a Buick Electra 225 that was the size of a barge and had a 455. Flipping the air filter was cool and what many of us did to get that special sound. I got my license in my sophmore year, so after JV basketball practice the guys would load up the barge and ride on the back roads over to Sugar Loaf Mountain. Did not like it at the time but it also brings back memories.
