I had to laugh... Sally is a popular person.. as in I called her and I reminded Tracy to tell her.. They live about 2 miles from me and I see him at the local country store all the time.. If anyone sees Clay Lacy or Karen Cooper (Gibson) remind them.. I talked to both but neither have joined..
First Job... I started working at Hill's the day after I got my car.. Had to make that money for that $52 a month car payment!! Can't remember where I worked in the store.. I was trained and sooner or later worked all over it.. We used to have a blast in the summer in the parking lot.. We would set up a net and play badmitton. The county cops would drive by.. looking and laughing!! I am sure that they thought that we were crazy.

CARS! Now that's a subject that I remember since I put so many car stereo's in them. I had a light blue 67 Olds Cutlass convertible, Victor Bradley had a red Jeep, Del Williams had a 1958 Pontiac Bonneville, Jeff Epperley had a blue pinto, Scoop(Jeff Ellis) had a Chevelle with 3 on the tree( we use to go to McDonalds for lunch on gain time), Jeff "Harry" Rorrer and Mark Council shared a car( a white BMW 2002 I think), Mark Torre had Yellow and Black Buick GS, Jeff Maronic had an old jeep that he chained to a tree so it couldn't get towed. There were so many more... Why can't I remember, Oh yeah, I'm almost 50, just 2 more years and we're a Half of a Century old. I really do not feel half that age yet! Who's with me.

Hi Linda, I talked to Clay Lacy too(he works for Fed Ex)and told him about the web site about a week ago in Burger King at Cave Spring Corners but he still hasn't registered. I know of alot of people I've told that have not registered or signed in yet. (?) I do not know what they are waiting for, this is fun. The class of "78" is awesome!!

I thought Laura Hunter was in our class, but she's not listed. Did she graduate early? I talked to her along time ago, i have since spoken with her brother, Mark which was also some time ago now, she was living over seas some where. Does anyone know anything?

Hey Rob - you mentioned Robin Dixon...one of my big memories from junior year is of painting the murals for prom in her driveway. If I remember correctly, Robin and others were the terrific artists and I must have been a laborer. What a fun time we had decorating for prom and it looked great! Does any school have the students decorate for their prom any more or has everyone moved the dance to a "fancier" venue? How about the Cave Spring prom these days?

Linda Grubb

Hi Julie... As one that has been thur a recent CS Prom.. Know that it is a fancy one now. It has been held on Mother's Day weekend the last 5 years and the ones of us that are on the after-prom commitee are trying really hard to change it.. Tickets, with dinner included are $70! Dinner is at 7 and dance starts at 8. The Jr. class is still in charge, but it is more decision making than actual labor!!
After-prom is from 12:30 am until 4:00am. We have a blast. I have been in charge of the prize store the last 4 years and I have 2 more to go!! We usually end up with most of the kids that went to prom there. We are blessed with a good number of parents that love to work it. Our problem is the staff... Only because they have to be there, does the administration show up.. Other than them, we rarely have any teachers show up.. The kids love to see them there with their hair down and goofing off. They were really disappointed this year when the new principal came in and sat at the door and never moved.
There is still the wild money that is spent. A young lady at CS was going to our prom and to the one at PH also. She was over heard saying that her mom spent $600 on one dress and $400 on the other!!!
My daughter is a rising Jr!! She went to prom 2007 with her BF who was a Sr. So I got a break this past year with the expenses. She has her dress for prom in 2009 ( Sr. Year). So I have one more to buy.. Cross your fingers for me.... Check out my profile.. Both of my kids prom pictures are posted.....

What fun it has been reading all of these memories. Julie, the mural for the prom was actually painted in my garage. I was the decoration chairman that year and with the help of many of you sold ice cream in the cafeteria all year to fund our decoration expenses. Robin drew the mural.....and a fine job she did. I think my grandmother was even there one weekend when we were painting and she wanted to set me up with a guy who was helping us paint. She would have been very happy for me to marry out of high school. What fun it was planning and decorating for that prom. There were many folks helping....my memory is much more faded than many of you!!! If you have a great memory of the Jr. prom please share!!

Before cars get wiped off the page by prom memories, I have one story that happened after Cave Spring. There seem to be a lot of Pinto fans out there, so here I go. It happened when I was rookie volunteer firefighter in Essex Junction, Vermont. I had my Mustang and my Kojak-light (remember Starsky and Hutch with their Javelin--same light, better car). It was in 1980, and we got called out at 2 AM. As I crested the hill going into town, I saw flames about 100 feet in the air. "Holy bleep!" I said and headed toward my first major fire. It was a warehouse fire and there were 5 or 6 Pintos backed up to the building. There was alot of talk back then about whether Pinto gas tanks explode. Well, they do when they are parked next to a burning warehouse!

Well now I have been busy as all get out lately and traveling and working and , well, unfortunately since Katrina happened back in August 2005, I have some kind of major sleep disorder. I simply can't sleep more than 2 or 3 hours at a time, so here I am. Anyway, I was reading all of the comments for the last month, and wow, you folks have great memories, I am really amazed! I used to live next door to Allen Garrett in Sugarloaf Farms, grew up with his family. They were all fabulous, and reading Allen's stuff has completely choked me up for now. So, I will take a late night walk down to the beach with the dog, and try and think about what I need to do the rest of the week at work, which is a daunting task. Sorry I am boring, I love ALL OF YOU!!!

Doug Settles

I was just checking out Billy Bova's post and reading some of the other references to Allen Garrett and it got me thinking about the "good old days"....

The first band I was ever in was the Southern Sun and Allen Garrett was the drummer for that band. Hensley Woods, Ralph Edwards and Tim Wingo were all in it at one point or another, but I still remember setting up in Al's garage (next door to the Bova estate) and playing Smoke on the Water, Sweet Home Alabama, Funk #49, etc. until the neighbors would call the cops....

We all thought we were real good but Allen actually WAS..
He was light years ahead of the rest of us and there is no telling how far he could have gone in the music business if not for the accident. We played our first gig at Terry Atkins' birthday party in her back yard. What a trip...Great memories...

I look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion and I hope Robin Dixon isn't still seeing those "pink elephants" she used to see in Ms. Brittle's 9th grade Geometry class.....

I too have been off the site for awhile and have missed alot. It's fun reading all the stories. Billy, quite understandable about your sleep disorder! I have one myself but not because of a hurricane. I also read Allen's story and it is truly inspiring.Allen, we all hope to see you at the reunion. We could all learn a little about priorities in life from you. Sounds like the plans are coming along. Thanks to all the "mini" reunion committee members for your hard work and the phone call. Loved talking to everyone!

This is off the subject.. But one of then things that since 1978 I have always wondered about... Our Junior yearbook... WHAT THE HECK!!?? Do you have it or remember the color?? It was a lime GREEN!!! With 4-6 then Seniors on a dock somewhere... If you worked on the staff then.. Please by all means... Can you tell us(as I am thinking someone else has to wonder too) what the heck you guys were thinking........I was in the library at CSHS about 3 weeks ago and there is a book shelf with all the yearbooks on it. That one is the only one that I saw that is not red, black or white... And you can see it from across the room...

One of them things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmm....

King of all mid-life sleep disorders and malfunctions here, guess it's another night of the movie channels or listen to Scott McClellan throw his old boss "W" under the bus some more on the cable news shows! Anyway, Doug, I can remember y'all practicing in Allen's garage next door. Darn if you didn't get to make a career out of your love and hobby and talent, wish I had been so lucky! God I wish I was 16 again!!! Laurie, your the best, don't pick up my bad habit of NEVER sleeping, get your rest girl! Linda, I couldn't find or produce an old class annual if my life depended on it, and if i ventured back into the building of the current Cave Spring High School the walls would probably tumble-in and the roof would blow-off and land in the middle of 419! Then the morons that run the County Guvment would send me an invoice to pay for damages!!! Better walk the dog some more tonight........

Guys, just letting you know that I have been following your discussions and it sure brings back old memories. I hope we can keep this up and stay in touch. While my kids were glad when they graduated high school, I had a sad feeling. I look back at the good times and bad times and realize how fortunate we all were to go to a school like Cave Spring with folks like you.

Billy, I hope you get some sleep. You were hilarious on the school bus back in middle school. I remember you giving funny lectures and singing "She's Gone". Try watching PBS, that usually puts me to sleep.

Linda,
I have the Green, our Junior year yearbook. I also have a good scanner that does photos well. Tell me what you want and your regular e-mail address and I'll get it to you forthwith. What I don't have is our sophmore yearbook. I know that there are some photos of the play "The Mouse that Roared". Since this was my acting debut, I'd like to get those pics. My publicist says its what I need to get out of the shadow of Harrison Ford. My address is GregBurboRN@aol.com

Greg.. I have the green one... I am just wondering what the hack caused the decision to "go green".. I have that 10th grade yearbook here... Let me dig it out and I will scan them and send them to you...
$99 scanner at Wal-Mart.... WONDERFUL addtion to any computer!!!!

Green yearbooks? I thought they were all black or red or, well, shows what I know. Scanners, yea, thats what must be inside the slot machine that scanned my players club card tonight before I struck-out early and got home while the "gettin-was-good"! Wonder what moron figured out to put a casino 10 minutes from my house. At least I get my money's worth at the buffet. Better go to church in the morning and pray harder. All of y'all are an absolute "treasure trove" of our classes past history and timeline. I SALUTE you for the memories and the slow release of nostalgia related to our youth. Glad somebody remembers all of this stuff and was actually responsible enough through the years to save the printed evidence of our time together in school. Linda, you are amazing. Mike Alderson, I usually do watch PBS at night, Charlie Rose Show, still can't sleep however.......

Pam Smith (Copeland)

I haven't yet posted anything here. I have really enjoyed reading everyone's memories. It's almost as if I wasn't in this class. How bizarre! I had good friends in our class in Jr. High but when I got to high school I drifted away. I hung out with the people that I worked and they didn't go to CSHS. I had the same boyfriend from sophomore year until graduation but he went to Byrd. I have so many of the same memories but not with any of you. I wasn't aware of how much I distanced myself in high school. The reason I decided to post was the question posed about our first jobs and how they have affected future jobs and lives. Well obviously my first job affected my high school years. I went to work at the Steer House. My uncle owned it and I started working at 15. Most of the people there were much older than me and I think I felt important when they invited me to hang out. Led to way too much partying and I do regret that but it did make me very aware as parent. I was more alert to watching that my kids did get those high school memories and were very involved in everything at high school. Another job I had was at Tanglewood Cinema. I loved that job! We could go to any movie at any theater free as long as it wasn't on Fri or Sat. I worked with Todd Stockstill for a while there. He called me an paradox. I never knew how mean people can be until that job though. Mr. Kilburn paid 80% of minimum wage to high school students. He had to pay full wages after the summer of graduation. He made life so bad that most people quit. I was determined to stay but after a couple of months of total harassment I finally gave it up. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. I didn't know many of you well in high school but reading your stories here, I'm sure that we would get along well as adutlts. I won't be at the reunion but I hope everyone has a wonderful time.

Pam Smith, you were pretty then, you are pretty now! What a great life you have had, living out west in all of that natural beauty. I have been to the Dakotas, Idaho, wow, could live there myself, except for the winters!!! When I was in junior high school, during the summers, I rode my bike up castle rock road every morning at 6am to work on Ezra Wertz's crop farm. The work was grueling, but I loved it! Ever since then I have dreamed of being a farmer. Really the only two things I ever wanted to be in my life was a farmer or a preacher, and I guess the Lord never gave me the "calling" like he did some of our old classmates. Anyway, enough about me and my mid-life thoughts and regrets. Please try and make the reunion, if you can. If not, stay in touch here, and keep enjoying that beautiful scenery where you live!

Just so everybody knows, the infamous Green Yearbook cover of 1977 was designed by one Heidi Hagen. Its a long shot, but I can try to locate her and ask her "why green?' As we all know "it's not easy being green". I think Kermit and the Muppets debuted when we were about 10 years old. When they got their own show, "The Muppet Show," they cracked me up. M*A*S*H, Emergency and Adam-12 probably had more to do with who I've become. M*A*S*H was probably the most influential.
I was and still am an excellent marksman (my dad is a Marine). I could have been a rifleman or even a sniper, but I choose to be a medic. I had to serve and it is one job that is morally right even if politicians are wrong. Vietnam fell when we were freshmen. That was huge for us. Many of us had older sibling or uncles and aunts in the fighting or the protesting. Well, its very odd sometimes how one thing leads to another. I've just gone from a green book cover to the most devasting war that we know in our time. I suppose this site is supposed to be for fun and happy memories.
I'm going to post this anyway. We have all faced serious trials and fought for our beliefs because of the values that our parents and teachers instilled in us. We had a lot of fun and laughs in those days, but a noble spirit was built into us also. "Honor et Scientia, Sed Maior est Honor." "Honor and knowledge, but more importantly, honor." I've never seen a better high school motto. I've had many mottos in my life. My first unit was "Ascend to Victory!" I was a Chaplain Assistnat for several years, "For God and Country." When I was with an armor unit it was "Put the Vermonter's Ahead." Slogans are often much more than just words. Cave Spring's motto has meant more to me than any of these. The US Army Infantry has the only motto that's better and only because someone else said it first. Jesus said "Follow me."

Hey Billy whatch out for those casinos! We're both in gambling country. I'm not much on the boats but did have a weakness for the video poker for a while. North La. has the majority of La.'s gambling.Five boats here in the big metropolis of Shreveport. I found an old scrapbook with lots of newspaper clippings from ball games etc. Will try to fix it up and bring it to the reunion. Could be fun for of you to read. We had some great pep rallies. The senior buys of '76 were one of my favorites. Loved that kazoo band!

Laurie.. My daughter is a rising Junior at CS.. I have told her and her friends about the SKB and they are thinking about at revival of the group for their Senior year.. I had to laugh.. what a hoot that would be. .Only the administration there now would probally think that they were a "gang" and make them stop... It is not as fun as it used to be.. New principal this year and he is a stick in the mud... to put it nicely...

After reading Pam Copeland's post, I will venture out and say something as well. I have enjoyed reading all of these posts and also the profiles. I didn't graduate with this class due to moving in my junior year, but grew up and went to school with many of you through the years and it is great to see how everyone is doing.

Okay my insomnia problem is showing up. I obviously can't spell late at night! Maybe the teacher part of my brain has shut down for the summer since I'm not with the kids everyday. Jeff, thanks for forward;I remember that yearbook picture.

All:

Talked to CSHS Principal Steve Spangler again and beginning tomorrow he will run our Reunion Notice & Website on CS's new roadside marquee, corner of Electric Road & Chaparral Drive.

(Sports & Award Banquets are now over, except for Baccalaureate and Graduation June 6th, so he finally has the space available for us). It'll run for a week, off a week, back on a week, and so on, up until Reunion.

Regards, Brian.
