Ron was my best friend from Adair Elementary until he left to serve in Vietnam. I had a secret crush on him all through High School which remained a secret. I saw him once when he came back for a visit after he lost his arm in service to his country. He was the kindest, sweetest guy and I always felt his friendship. Knowing him, was one of my life's greatest joys.

Ron was our faithful and skilled photographer on the Robin's Tale in high school where I knew him best. I always thought he was a great guy but we didn't keep in touch after high school. I saw him again, and for the last time, at our 20 year class reunion. I remember enjoying talking with him so much. We just picked up right where we left off...only this time he had injuries from Viet Nam. We had always been able to talk honestly and did so again. And though he didn't actually say it, I knew he was gay and wanted me to know he was okay with his life. I am grateful that I let him know that I accepted and respected him and as far as I was concerned we were still friends. We exchanged addresses. It was not long after that reunion that I read an article in the Minneapolis Tribune about him that saddened me. He had died of AIDS in San Francisco and his ashes had been lovingly dispersed by friends from the Golden Gate Bridge into SF Bay. Our loss, truly.

Ron and I go back to 5th grade back in the old neighborhood.  Played ball, biked and hung out.  As teenagers he was part of our group that camped, canoed, hunted, took motorcycle trips and he always had a camera.  He was dependable, more outgoing than anyboy I knew.  All the parents loved him.   He had a confidence.  Many times he did things like when we were motorcycling up in Duluth.  The Seaway had recently opened and we saw one of first ocean going vessels docked there.  He walked up onto the Japanese ship and through sign language got us on board for the grand tour, a couple of high school kids!  At the time we just thought he was super religious as he didn't seem to have the same interests the rest of us had. When we later found out he was gay, it came as a little surprise. His injuries, AIDs and I think living in San Francisco brought out more openess about his lifestyle.  When he'd come back to Minneapolis we'd talk about what had went on.  He'd say he never told me back then because I would have disowned him.  Might be true but maybe not, He was a great guy and a good friend.
