Since Graduating:
From Yahoo Group posting 10/13/08:
After U of R, I worked for a year at Rochester General and Genesee Hospitals in 1964. I was an orderly at Rochester General and then clerk to the Asst. Administrator at Genesee. That experience and the contacts I made, especially at Genesee Hospital, led me to graduate school.
I spent two years at the Duke University program in Hospital Administration and earned an MHA (Masters in Hospital Administration) followed by another two years as Asst. Administrator at Duke University Hospital. During that period my wife (Judy (Otto) and I had our first child, Michael born in 1968.
Judy and I moved to Washington, DC where I did research for the Association of American Medical Colleges. Judy and I adopted our second child Jonathan while living in Silver Spring, MD., just outside D.C.
In 1970 we moved to Boston, where i worked at the Harvard Community Health Plan (now Harvard Pilgrim). Unfortunately Judy and I were divorced in 1974. I moved to Washington, DC and became a consultant to the Office of Health Maintenance Organizations, Department of Health and Human Services. I did this for one year and then moved back to Boston to become the Assistant Health Commissioner in the Department of Public Health (Mass.).
In 1978 I moved back to Washington to become Director of the Federal Office of Health Maintenance Organizations during the Carter Administration. During this period, I led the federal government's effort to promote the development of HMOs. This was a political appointment, After the Carter term ended I spent some time at the NY Department of Health and then began an 8 year career with John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company working in their HMO subsidiary as regional manager, and then Executive Vice President.
In 1986 I remarried to Kelli Kelman Veit, who will be with me at the reunion. Kelli and I met at the University of Pennsylvania, where I was serving as an adjunct Associate Professor in the Wharton Business School. I was teaching in the Wharton Health Care program.
Kelli received her Masters at the Wharton School, Univ. of Pa in 1985, and worked for a couple of years as a health consultant before our son was born. Henry was born in 1988. Henry, now 23, graduated from Miami University of Ohio in December 2010. My son Michael (40) has a successful career as a marketing manager at RSA Securities in Boston. Jonathan (37) worked in NYC for many years as a freelancer for the media doing film editing, sound work and some film making. John recently moved to Los Angeles to pursue a media consulting career.
I finished the last 13 years of my career at Towers Perrin, now Towers Watson, a human resources consulting firm. I was a national practice leader for their health consulting practice. During my consulting career with Towers Perrin, I served a broad array of clients from national employers who were trying to control their employee health benefits costs, to major insurers and health care organizations. I served on the Towers Perrin Board from 1997 until I retired in 2001.
I was an independent consultant from my retirement until 2009. In retirement I enjoy cycling and resistance training as my major hobbies. I have also studied nutrition, and occasionally do local nutrition seminars. I enjoy reading, and studying various topics, especially those related to personal health and lifestyle.
Kelli and I now split our time between our home in Atlanta and Longboat Key, Fl. Kelli is very active in the community in Atlanta and is an avid reader. She belongs to book clubs in both Florida and Atlanta, and is a wonderful cook. She volunteers at our Temple, where she is engaged in many community services.
