Sunday, June 9 we are planning breakfast and/or brunch meetings with those available. We will also have a side trip to the Finger Lakes wine country Sunday afternoon for those interested. We will have sign-ups for this event at the main reunion event Saturday afternoon. Please see the Wine Tour details below:
Wine Itinerary Ideas
Route 1 Keuka Lake
490 E to 90E to Canandaigua exit
Rt 332 to routes 5 and 20-turn left (east) on 5 and 20
Stop 1 (if you like Beer)
Naked Dove Brewery :4048 routes 5 and 20 .They are located just outside of Canadaigua on left
maybe a mile past last commercial stretch. Wonderful beers brewed from local ingredients. I am not a
beer drinker but I love their beers.
Continue east on route 5 and 20 about 15 minutes until you are just outside Geneva and look for Red
Jacket Orchard sign on right
Stop 2
Red Jacket Orchards: 957 Rt 5
Try their fruits, cheeses the most amazing award winning organic apple and other juices. Good stop for
picnic supplies.
Exit right and continue about one half mile to route 14A turn right and take it down to Penn Yan. (Takes
about 25 minutes)
At Penn Yan follow signs for route 54 where you will take a right toward Hammondsport.
Keuka Springs is shortly after village. Haven't been there yet but will update final brochure after a visit.
Watch for sign and flag on your left.
Stop 3
Keuka Springs Winery :243 Rt 54 also called East Lake Rd
This winery has won awards recently. We will try it soon. Exit and take a left and keep
going down the lake towards Hammondsport . In about 15 minutes watch for Ravines winery sign and
flag on your left, across from The Switz Restaurant.
Stop 4
Ravines Winery:146630 Rt 54
Award winning boutique winery. Our personal favorite. Owner grew up with wine making family in
Provence and his wines taste very European (think dry) Might have lunch available. Chocolate tasting
pairs. It is an absolutely beautiful spot to look out at the lake and they have some outdoor tables where
you could have lunch. I will have more info on lunch by reunion time.
Stop 5
Constantine Frank Winery: 9749 Middle Rd Hammondsport
Turn left out of Ravines. Continue abut 10 minutes along lake into Hammondsport and turn right on
54A watching for signs for the winery on your left. There is a small road leading up to it.
This was the first Finger lakes Winery using European methods. It is big and has a very different feel
from Ravines. They make very good wine but it can be crowded and is definitely less personal.
To return t Rochester you can continue on 54A aroubdthe other side of Keuka Lake or if you have a
detailed map (I will get some) youcan also return via Naples for another pretty ride.
Route 2 Seneca Lake
Follow the same beginning until Red Jacket Orchards
Stop 3
Ravines Winery:Geneva Location:400 Barracks Rd
After coming out of Red Jacket Orchards, turn right and continue a very short distance (maybe one or
two lights, not quite sure until I check it out) to Pre-emption Rd on right. Go down this road about a
mile (maybe a little more) and turn left Barracks Rd and flag for Ravines Winery. This is closer than
the Keuka location, same wines but not as pretty location. See description on first page.
Exit right and go back to 5 and 20 and follow, turn right on route 5. You will go through what is
suburban sprawl Geneva and in a mile or so watch for signs for 14 south. This will put you right along
Seneca Lake, passing through Hobart Campus (it maybe a Cloverleaf entrance to 14, not sure at
moment) Travel south about 20 or so minutes until you see entrance for Hermann Wiemmer on right.
Stop 4
Hermann Wiemmer Winery:3964 Rt 14
Has won awards and one of early great Seneca Lake winemakers. There will be lots of wineries to
choose from. I am picking the ones we like, which have European styles and good reputations.
Stop 5
Glenora Winery:5439 Rt 14
If you can handle another winery Glenora is another good one and close to Watkins Glen.
The Glen has several good restaurants (more on that later) and isn't too far from Stonecat Grill or Red
Newt Bistro if you go up other side of Lake. It is also home to Watkins State Park where you can hike
beautiful gorges if you haven't drunk too much wine. Lots of B and Bs in area if you have extra time.
Note from Nancy Steinberg Kraus
I will have Wine Trail maps at the reunion. All these places have websites. If you have more
time than just Sunday I would suggest an overnight in the Finger Lakes. There are some great
restaurants too. Our favorites are Port's Cafe (dinners only and many many fresh specials using local
ingredients not on regular menu) just south of Geneva on route 14 and Stonecat Cafe on the east side of
Seneca Lake. Stonecat has a jazz brunch going until about 2 pm on Sundays.
Highly suggest reading Summer in a Glass by Evan Dawson for a fascinating account of a bunch of
Finger Lakes wineries including most of ones I have suggested. You get the human stories behind the
wines.
I will take these routes before the reunion and make any adjustments and have these as handouts
at the reunion. I will also get the tourist brochures for several of the Finger Lakes and have on hand. I
also plan to stop at Rochester Tourism and have some info. There may be some new places you want to
visit if you haven't been here in awhile. I would say even with Kodak tanking there are some positive
signs here with lots of good restaurants and museums and plenty of great nature places with easy
access. Feel free to email me with any questions.
