Becky Armstrong (Helms)

My sister, Brenda Armstrong from the Class of '65 will send her fourth grade picture to me and I will post that. She wrote down all the first names of those in her class picture!

Looks like Mike Pitmon on the back row, fourth person from left and Daniel Webster on the left end of the middle row. I didn't move back to Rock Hill until the sixth grade at Ebenezer Avenue. But those two certainly look like Mike and Daniel.

The following is a beautiful Christmas message from David Sealy:

FAVOR OR FAVOUR Luke 1:26-29 (HCSB) 26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And ?the angel? came to her and said, “Rejoice, favored woman! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was deeply troubled by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be. What does “favored” mean? Greek Word: ??????? Transliteration: charito?: to grace, i.e. indue with special honor :- make accepted, be highly favoured. Strong's Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. That same word is used again in Luke 2:52 (HCSB) 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people. Mary was chosen by the LORD to be the Mother of God, the SON. She was indued with Special Honor. She was GRACED by the LORD. Her Son was conceived of the HOLY SPIRIT, but remember She was not just a vehicle for a purpose. This is a highly Divine thing we are reading and experiencing in the ETERNAL: fully human and fully Divine. The LORD Jesus Christ did not surprise the Father as He increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people. Friends, as you wrap your brain around this fact, stop and think. Are you FAVORED? Have you received the grace of God? The Prophecy of the LORD’s coming GRACE is revealed in Genesis 3:15. It came to fruition on the CROSS. I pray this Christmas Season as we view that BABY in the manger in drama, song, and Holy Scripture, teach your children and grandchildren about Favor, Grace and JESUS, the CHRIST. Have a Christmas Eve service in your HOME and at family gatherings. Light a candle, offer prayers of Thanksgiving, Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. David M Sealy

David,

Thanks for your message about the true meaning of Christmas. My husband and I were discussing that in today's world, many young people think of it as shopping for presents..and are not aware of much more.

Even though I have not seen Charlie for a long time I thought of him a lot. One of the finest people I have known and he was always someone who you knew would be a good friend. He will be missed but he is in the hands of our Lord and I look forward to seeing him again one day.

Rest in peace Charlie.

Becky: Have you seen where the other classes really use this Message Forum a lot? I wonder why no one thinks to use it. Thanks, Ladd, for your message about Charlie.  Maybe it's us?  Whadaya think?  I see where the donations for Roy Westerlund are really going well. I hope they meet the goal! I'm so glad to see all our classmates logging on, some haven't been on in months and months.  K

Bruce Morris says that these are fantastic. You are

going to LOVE this. Somebody did a lot of research.

All selections(300) are videos of artists performing.

A high school somewhere in DC area put all this

together. The jukebox is great! Bladensburg High

4/15/2014  Recently I heard a story about a young man here in Charlotte, 12-ish or so, who encountered his first rotary dial telephone and didn't know how to use it. Aw, these kids have missed so much!

Kaye, I still haven't figured out what the following items are yet: Blue Tooth, IPod, ... well a bunch of UO-K items (unidentifiable objects by Ken). I don't get around fast enough to keep up! So I guess I can't say anything bad about the youngster concerning the dial phone. I still have one in my kitchen that's unplu

Kenneth: We are living in the Boomer world. I don't know what everything is either. But, I still long for the old kitchen wall phone, rotary or push-button, with the long cord that stretches from the stove to the refrigerator and around to the table. They were heavy and durable and I never dropped the receiver in the pot of boiling water, like my sister did her cell phone when I called her during supper prep. I just pass all those questions along to Becky who has all the answers. That was a nice memory you shared with us about Dennis Brewer. We have a picture of the Richmond Drive School and I wondered if you could identify anyone in the photo. It is in Roll Call. Let me know if you recognize anyone, Becky is in there too.

Love the Doo Wap test!! I Believe I got all of them.  You see, I grew up with guys & girls 4 to 6 yrs. older than me, so I heard all the music, talk, jive, etc.  It was fun!!  In reference to Richmond Drive Elem.School Photo,  I know the following:

Charles Ferguson, Nancy Jo Arnold, Becky Armstrong, Lamar Hopper, Linda Lindsey, Judy Beach, & maybe more.  I have to go back & look @ photo again, this is off the top of my head.  You have to remember, that they started busing all of us to different schools around 3rd grade.  I went to Richmond Drive 1st, 2nd & 3rd grades.  4th, 5th & 6th grade we were bussed to Ebenezer Avenue & back to Sullivan Jr. High 7th grade if you lived on north Cherry Road side of town & surrounding areas.

I'll write again, Betty

Remember you can also access our website through FB by selecting Class Connection on this site under Member Functions. After that you will see a tab on your FB page which only serves as a link to our class website. Think of it as an added convenience where you do not have to log in to two websites.

I need your help. Some messages by classmates are posted on FB and not on our website. I will try to keep our website updated as much as possible with FB postings.  However, I need your help to alert me since I am not checking FB 24/7..Becky

Classmates,  I read these two comments below on FB from Susan and Tommy. What would you say to:

I'm so Rock Hill that I remember....??

You can post your comments here on the message forum. Just click post response and tell us what YOU remember.

Thanks, Becky 7/24/2014.

From Susan Deese Hollich Woody:

I'm so Rock Hill, that I can remember the water trucks coming along the streets to water them down!

From Tommy Cheek:

I am so Rock Hill, the cops used to take us home, and threaten to tell our daddys, which was a helluva lot worse.

I'm so Rock Hill, I remember the weekly City of RH Mosquito Trucks sent to city neighborhoods with THE FOG to kill mosquito's.  We would run thru the fog for fun.  I remember Celenese Park, Joslin Park & Ebenezer Landing in their hayday.  Swings, Shuffle Board, Swimming; making friends.  I remember Confederate Park, same as other parks, but football season Sock Hops.  I remember the old Masonic Lodge & the new one built beside it downtown.  I remember Mr. & Mrs. Ashworth who headed up Rainbows & Demolay's.  All the training to be a Rainbow.  All the Demolay Dances & etiquite learned.

I remember the old Dutch Mill, cruisin Porters and shooting pool and plaing pinballs.  I remember Cynthia Holden.  I remember Myrtle Beach.  I remember being bewildered most of the time.  I remember Belks.  I remember working at Celanese on Sat mornings.  I remember the river.  I remember never quite being good enough.  I remember the difficulties of those years.  I would not repeat them.  Certainly there were some good times.  But I have had many better since.  The best thing I ever did was leave Rock Hill in 1966.  It is beyond me that people have remained there their entire lives.  C'est la vie

Does anyone know where Michelle Keel is?  I owe her a major apology.

Bill

I used to be so Rock Hill that I remember St. Phillips Hospital & Confederate Park. I grew up on & remember S. Saluda St being a great neighborhood. I left RH for good in 1974, but can easily understand why someone would stay there their entire lives..........sometimes I wish I had!!

In response to BB's comments:

Rock Hill was "the village" where we were raised. There was a friend, neighbor, or "spy" on every corner. Rock Hill was a safe place in which to explore and grow with freedom. High school was not the most precious time in our lives. We were adolescents just beginning to explore the possibilities of the world. We never felt we quite measured up (previously quoted) on many levels and probably because we didn't. What did we know outside of our sheltered world? We only knew what we saw and that was a very small portion of what was to come.  We were bewildered (previously quoted) because we didn't have all the facts.  Why wasn't I pretty or popular? I didn't know then, but I do now.  God had not yet given me the tools I needed to find myself. One of those tools was to move away and gain experience. Another tool was to be myself and be grateful for all the gifts I had.  The years away from Rock Hill have taught me so many things, but I would never have been "Me" without those values learned from living in a community like Rock Hill. I was wondering what would have happened if we all stopped learning by age 18 - we would be a nation of very self-centered and ignorant people. I'm grateful for all those years in-between. Each one of us at RHHS had an influence on someone else's life whether it was good or bad. We all learned from each other. Since reconnecting through our web site I am still learning and very grateful to see how well we all have grown up. I still don't measure up in several areas, but I see that I need to work on myself STILL! It is an ongoing process to be a whole person.

In response to BB's comments:     "Why would anyone want to live there?"  In the words of my favorite North Carolinian, Andy Griffith:  "Why would I want to move to the big city where I would be just a little fish in a big pond? I have everything I ever wanted right here!  I would much rather be a big fish in a small pond."  Hail to Andy!  Sounds like some people know what they want long before others do. It takes a strong person to know what's important to them at an early age. Strong people make good citizens. They keep the values going. They want what's best for their community. They raise good children. They are the backbone of the community.
