I remember back in Durham when I was about five, we had a little refrigerator about 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide and mother kept her ironing in there. Did anybody else's mother do that? Why?

Yes, Kay! put clothes in the frig freezer compartment. Then pressed them...Why? I think....Clean smell + starched appearance. WOW where did that memory recall come from...how fun, tho!

Thanks Rebecca! I'm old and I guess it's easier to remember long-term facts rather than short-term. Things were so different then. I don't remember having much food in that little frige. We bought as we needed it and didn't store. We had meatless meals which were pretty bad. I guess mother did the best she could on her budget. I specifically remember one meal that was spegetti noodles with a "sauce" made of canned tomatoes and sauteed onions. I got sick! Probably, I was sick before she served it and that just expedited the process. Otherwise, we ate well. Snacks consisted of mayo sandwiches or, of course, peanut butter sandwiches. Saltines with "oleo" spread on them was aother snack. There were no bagged cookies. Things like Hostess cupcakes were saved for our lunches. She would bake a cake or make some chocolate chip cookies or peanut butter cookies for an extra treat. She tried to serve us liver one day but even Daddy would not eat it. Disgusting! Those were the best of times, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without!"

PS: Remember the size of that freezer compartment? Two ice trays to accomodate 4 glasses of freshly made sweet tea? Didn't take long to run out of ice on a hot summer's day!

Dr Burleson's obituary is one of the most touching I have ever read. He had such an interesting well-lived life.. He was an example of how we all should stive to make better lives for ourselves. I wonder if any of his students at RHHS-66 knew of his youth in the orphanage? Did he talk about it?

Our teenage years were some of the hardest, if not on ourselves but everyone around us. It is interesting that we got our first look at the world through our parents eyes who really knew about as much about it as we did at that age. They tried to bend us in their image which didn't seem to workout. I have learned to put most of the bad stuff out of my mind, there just isn't room in there for everything and I have to make room for the good stuff to come in. Right now it's pretty empty. As we get older, I find it harder to understand the why-for's. I try to roll with the tide and hope for the best. I do find time everyday to thank God for the goodness that he sends, good health, good family (though it was very difficult to get to that point). And I thank him for making me aware of things that were unclear to me before. Through that I discovered I'm smarter than I thought, nicer than some, and not as old as a lot of people my age.

I remember my mom putting clothes in the refrigerator and leaving them there until she ironed them. I believe it had to do with starching them and when they dried they were real stiff so she sprayed a little water on them, rolled them up and stored in frig for a while before ironing. Not sure why. Maybe it made them easier to iron with all the stiffness from starching. I;m going to google and see if I can find out about this.

This is what I found when I googled sprinkling clothes and putting in frig before ironing:

I remember mom sprinkling clothing with water and putting them in the fridge before ironing. What was the purpose of putting damp stuff in the refrigerator? She used a sprinkler top that fit a standard Coke bottle...are these still available anywhere? They probably went out of fashion when steam irons became available.

Best Answer: She was pre-sprinkling them so she wouldn't have to do it later when she got ready to iron them, they would have soured if they were left at room temperature. I remember those sprinkler tops and the women who used to iron their clothes that way....before the new steam-irons came out. The last place I saw one was TG&Y stores in the laundry section, and the TG&Y stores around here went out of business in 1986. I used a pump-spray bottle filled with water to mist my cottons before I ironed them.

Ruth: You are right, I forgot about the starch. It would have been a mess if it had dried on the cotton shirts. We are so lucky to have great inventions such as the steam iron - and not too many people use those any more. I enjoy the microwave too. Remember when our mothers defrosted all day. Then soaked the meat in cold water to finish the job - I did that myself back im the 70's and early 80's. I didn't have a MW until 1985 when I married my husband. I told him I married him for his money and appliances - he actually had very little of both. He did have a "Fry Daddy" which I thought was gross.

Anne, Hope you and your family have a great trip. Me and youngest Son just got back from a week in NM & Co on motorcycles. Rode to the top of Pikes Peak......73deg at the base 35deg at summit with snow/sleet. Not well suited for a scooter!!!!

Your reunion committee is working hard now and will continue over the next months to contact missing classmates to ask them to join our website. We are having some really good results and expect folks to keep joining as we near our 50th year reunion next year.

One thing I believe strongly about this class is that we were and are a special class. We shared classes together and walked the halls together at an interesting time in history. Of course, I and many of you did not realize it then. But those memories are bringing us together again thanks to this website authorized by your 2011 reunion committee over four years ago. Since then we have located 45% of our class thus far and we are excited that more are going to be joining soon.

Through our website I want you to know that I personally feel a close connection with each of you, no exceptions. You come here to share your very real feelings and recollections about those high school years and earlier years too, and about your life today. That is not a bad thing, is it? That is, if we talk from the heart and with mutual respect, right? Then I believe it is not a bad thing.

Kay, Dee and I have worked hard and put in a lot of hours to create a place (here) where you / we can share our individual thoughts and experiences on the past and where we are now. Your reunion committee is working hard to put together a very special reunion for you next year if you decide to come. So I hope you appreciate all that whenever you log in here.

Glad God is not finished with the most of us yet, but sure regret not being able to cross paths on this earth again with some of the precious souls no longer with us. Keep up the great work, ladies. George, just hearing from you makes me smile. Thanks for all the encouragement. When Becky asked me to do this about 4 years ago I was very skeptical because of my lack of computer skills, but since Beck does the hard work it has become such a pleasure to connect everyday with a classmate from 49 years ago. It has allowed me the privilege of getting to know so many good people and reconnecting with those I already knew. I am saddened by the fact I will not get to see some of those people at our reunion in April - you included. There aren't that many more reunions left, but we will have to figure out a way to keep them going. Our reunion committee is working hard to find lost classmates and make arrangements for a nice gathering. Thank you all for that! I am thrilled at the number of new members found on Facebook and from mailings sent out. It's great hearing from all of them. Whatever our differences in the past, most of us have grown to appreciate the struggle behind us and are grateful for the present. You are the best !

David: That is lovely. I do pray for peace within our souls. I often think of those who are completely poisoned by hate such as the terrorists of the world. I know all things are possible through God, but is it His will to change their hearts? I just don't understand hate to that degree. It is beyond my understanding why people choose to live a life of bitterness/hate. It seems like a lot of hard work to find something to hate everyday.

An Australian, an Irishman and a Newfie are in a bar.
They're stareing at another man. Suddenly the Irishman says, "It's Jesus!" Sure enough, it is Jesus, nursing a pint. Thrilled, they send him over a pint of Guinness, a pint of Fosters and a bottle of Molson Canadian.

Jesus accepts the drinks, smiles at the three men and drinks the pints slowly, one after another.

When he's finished the drinks, Jesus approaches the trio. He reaches for the hand of the Irishman and shakes it,
thanking him for the Guinness. When he lets go, the Irishman gives a cry of amazement: "My God! The arthritis
I've had for 30 years is gone. It's a miracle!"

Jesus then shakes the Aussie's hand, thanking him for the lager. As he lets go the man's eyes widen with shock.
"Strewth, mate, the bad back I've had all my life is completely gone! It's a miracle!"

Jesus then approaches the Newfie who knocks over a chair and a table trying to get away from the Son of God. "What's
wrong, my son?" says Jesus. The Newfie shouts, "Don't touch me, I'm on Workers Compensation!"
