I served in the US Army for a combined service, both active duty and reserve, of 37 years. The Soldier's Creed taught us to live the Army values, which are: Loyalty, Devotion to Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, Personal Courage. We all should attempt to live by these tenets.

After reading all of these wonderful responses, I needed to say that all of you seem to have a code of honor by which you live. It shows everyday in the lifestyle you have chosen for yourselves and by the way you treat others. I'm proud to be an American, but I'm also proud to be a Bearcat and having known you all. I'm fortunate to have been able to see the "finished product" that has been in the making for the past 50 years. If I were your mama I'd be proud to call you my sons and daughters.  As your mama might say, keep living well and being gateful for the advantages you have had in this lifetime.

"Watch your thoughts. They become words. Watch your words. They become deeds. Watch your deeds. They become habits. Watch your habits. They become character. Character is everything."

Jackie, remember when we had decency laws and noise ordincances and things like that? If people would stop to think how their words or actions might affect others, maybe they would think twice about saying offensive things or doing things that would have repercussions. Where did we lose that?  I think that might be called "respect".

My Mom always told me that if I didn't have anything good to say about someone, then don't say anything.  And people wonder why I am so quiet most of the time.

Ruth: Remember that line from "Steel Magnolias" - "if you can't say something nice about somebody, come and sit by me."

Kay, people are so funny now, it all about me, me or I, I, some people`s word doesn`t mean a thing, Respecting others was learn at home as we grew up .Advice was think twice before you do it.It all starts at home by the parents. It`s a whole generation now, I see disrepectful people everyday driving 125 miles a day, why do I do it ?? jk

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Oh Jackie, driving is the worst!! Time to retire and enjoy your life. Road rage seems to be a "safe" form of violence because no one can see your face, unless of course you have a wreck. I, myself, get enraged at stupid people who drive like fools and never appear to get caught. I think that enrages me more than the fool. Where is the Hiway Patrol? You are absolutely right, respect begins at home. My husband and I were talking about this very thing tonight and how the boys are suffering. What makes a boy a man and where are the opportunities today for a boy to become a man? There is no father in the home in so many families today, there is no required military time. At least a boy should be required to go through boot camp. My husband said if the boy goes, then the girls should go to. Don't know if that is a bad idea. Then as the young men get older, the women don't need him to either father her children or help raise them. I know several young men who spend all their time on the games. They didn't do well in college so they dropped out, living at home with parents, spend all their time at home on games, don't date but might go out occasionally. Really, no interaction with humanity other than time at work. What makes a boy a man? This all goes along with accomplishment and self-esteem, or lack there of.

Kay, I`m just going to keep on trucking to the very end or until they get tired of me, it`s this little thing call health insurance. You and Lake are absoutely right , I`ll just accept it and keep on going. Maybe someday, some will see the light and treat others the same as they want to be treated. I deal with a lot of very good PEOPLE and a lot of JERKS, life as I see it, jk

Kay,  I loved the movie Steel Magnolias.  And yes, I do remember that.  I need to watch that movie again.  Love the movies.  I even want to go see Cinderella but I would probably be the biggest, little girl in the movie.  Maybe I will wait til it comes out on DVD.

Ruth - you're never to old for Disney. I bet there are some of our men classmates who still cry at "Old Yeller"!

ANYBODY, Man, Woman or Child that doesn't cry at the end of Old Yeller just isn't human. The Champ is another that brings tears from anybody with feelings. I guess I'm one of those weirdo's.........The Sound of Music and Singing in the Rain are very over rated, give me a movie that brings out a person's heart.

Jimmy, bless your heart!  One I'll never understand that makes me cry is "The Way We Were" - why did they have to break up? I loved "Goodbye Mr. Chips" with Robert Donat, the original. This isn't fair really because I cry over commercials. But, there is nothing like a good dog story to tap my inner waterworks. Did you ever see the one about the life of a  boy and his dog, boy goes off to college  leaving his dog behind? I can't think of the name of it, but the dog died of old age on the boy's bed. WHAAAA!

PS: I think it's called "My Dog Skip"

Ruth, I think "Steel Magnolias" is to women as "The Godfather" is to men.

For a good dog movie watch "Hachi" with Richard Gere. Why can't humans have devotion like that?

Jimmy, I saw that but should watch again. I don't remember the ending.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM KEN HINSON:

I have just looked at all of the photography, furniture items, sculptures, glassware, embroidery, sketches, etc. in all the various areas in here. I am surprised to see just how much talent has been hidden all these years! Absolutely exciting! I know for certain that there are so many others who are sitting on their hands and keeping us from seeing what else is being kept secret from our eyes! Bring It On! Rock Hill High School is the Best! Kay has been hiding her drawing talents as well! We still have a LIFE! Create! Show off, Bearcats! Ken Hinson

Things I never heard of growing up:  peanut allergies, probiotics, ads on TV for feminine hygiene products, EDS, scaley feet, toilet paper (all gross!).  Never heard of gluten-free. Please help me name some others. Kids with guns (knives, rocks, sticks were the weapons of choice in those days)
