Kay Manning (Elrod)

Today, I checked with several of our classmates along the coast ranging from the Outer Banks down through Charleston. Two have responded so far.

From Paul Sprouse in Pawley's Island "The South Strand fared very well, unlike North Myrtle & Charleston. No loss of power."

Barbara Bolden Black in N. Myrtle Beach - "We have received lots of rain. Some places getting water in their buildings but so far we are lucky. Being east of Hwy 17 and close to Ocean Blvd where streets are flooding has caused me to really watch reports on TV. Actually, the only really bad area I have heard of has been Calabash/Carolina Shores. A friend had to evacuate and had water coming into the house. They seem to have had a levee or something break there. All the roads I have been on in the past few days have been open and no standing water.  Thanks for checking."

From Rebecca Littlefield Jones in Charleston:   Historic rainfall and flooding for sure! I am very Blessed in that I'm not under water here on Daniel Island. The sidewalks are ankle deep and ponds are overflowing. I have not been out since Friday and can only attest to my surroundings. I had cabin fever today so I put on my boots and walked around..not near any of the ponds for fear of alligators! All around Charleston So many people have been flooded out of their homes. The Market closed, Churches cancelled services, & even Southern Seasons is closed! My son is on Sullivan's Island and still today front and back yards are lake-like. My granddaughter is downtown @ College of Charleston and we had an outing last Sunday. We were walking around and I asked if her area ever flooded...well, I guess I jinxed it. Her streets were flooded and water up to her knees at one point. Of course, the kids love paddle boarding, sloshing around in it and even using floats! You couldn't catch me in that water....who knows what lurking underneath

Since last Thursday, I have received 41 weather alerts. I was in Raleigh last week and scheduled to return on Friday. I'm glad I decided to leave on Thursday as I would still be there. As it was, it took me 8 hours to get back - it is normally a 4 -5 hour drive.

It is about 3:30 and only sprinkling.

George Crow in Columbia writes:  Pretty heartbreaking in some areas, Kay. I received a call from a deputy sheriff in our church at about 5:00 this morning and was encouraged to cancel services which I did. Parts of Columbia were hugely devastated. Fortunately my family and I still have electricity and running water, but many have not been as fortunate. The Governor was calling it a "once every thousand years" event. Water is so powerful!!

Tommy Deas in Myrtle beach writes:  All is well here. Our area is mostly high ground with great drainage to the Inter  Coastal Waterway about 1/2 mile away. Most flooding occurs there. The retention pond out back was over it's banks about four feet but was no where near the house.
We are staying home and getting some R&R.
Thanks! Tommy

Chris Brumfield from Charleston writes:  Thanks for checking on me. My house is okay. Even though I am accross the street from salt water my house is elevated enough not to have any water in it. My business is beside a creek in another part of Charleston and I haven't had a chance to check on it yet. Chris

Ruth McAteer (Lockridge)

We live in North Myrtle Beach.

It first started raining on Friday afternoon and by early evening, we thought we might have to leave our house because of flooding.  The lake we live on started coming out of banks and with the unrelentless torrential rains Friday afternoon and night, the water kept creeping up to our house until a little after 10 o'clock when everything got quiet and the rain finally stopped. It had rained nonstop for 7 hours and it was such hard, hard rain that when it did stop we were just waiting for it to start again.  We stayed up late that night in case it did start to rain again so we could decide what we would do which didn't leave us many options as our neighborhood was flooded and cars were stalled in deep water and we knew we couldn't get out in our car or truck.  The street in front of our house was flooded and it had come up our driveway a ways.  Thank God, the rain didn't start again right away and we looked out at the lake around 2:30 a.m. and saw that it had receded some.  Then at 3:00 it started raining again but miraculously, the lake didn't rise anymore.  It pretty much stayed at same level which was still high but not as close to our house.  It continued to rain off and on but we were lucky.  It never came that close to our house again and on Saturday mid-morning, we were able to get out and observe the damage around our area and close to beach.  We saw some roads blocked off because of flooding and we saw one road that was washed out but we got to the grocery store and got a couple of errands done (most places were closed) then came back home.  We looked out the back window and saw a small line of loose grassy debris that the water had washed up and we could then tell how close the water had come to our house.  It was within a few feet of coming into our house but our house sets back about 7 feet further from the lake than the two houses on each side of us which DID have water get into their back porch/ sunrooms but I don't think there was any real serious damage.  So Billy and I were very lucky not to have any damage at all.  We are truly blessed.  God is good.  So Saturday was ok weather-wise but it started raining again on Sunday morning but still we were ok and water didn't gather in street out front or affect the level of the lake.  We did have some thunder and lightning and the power blinked off once but that was about it.  The poor people in Columbia and Charleston had it worse than we did although we got more inches of rain than Columbia, it actually did more damage there than here.

I appreciate you checking on us.  I have had so many friends and family members asking about our safety and it really makes us feel good to know that people care.

I am so glad the rain is over.  Can't wait to see sunshine.

Ruth and others, thank you for sharing your individual stories..serious and life threatening stories...your fellow classmates are thinking of you all.

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Ruth: Thanks so much for sharing your story.  I hope you won't have to ever experience that again and since this was a thousand-year event perhaps you won't.  I know the city cleanup and road closures will continue to be a problem. Let us know what you need and perhaps we can help you get your feet back on the ground. You were blessed, but how scary it was to see that water coming toward your house and not knowing when the rain was going to stop.  There are times we need to stop and realize the power of God and that he is there. Kay

All of you guys and ladies, My prayers are with you. I too have been through 2 actaual floods in California in the 80's and 90's along with a murderer who killed 4 students and a teacher at the high school in Olivehurst, California while my son and his girlfriend were in school there. God was looking over us then and has done so for me many, many times since then. I was in a severe car wreck a bit over a year ago about 4 miles from my house here in Raeford, NC when I pulled out in front of an unseen pickup truck at an intersection. My new car was totaled! I did not suffer anything except a pinched inner cheek from the impact! I was wearing a gold necklace when the "explosion" occurred. It ended up in the rear floorboard. There was a thick glass cologne bottle in the console that was shattered. I had made a special lunch for a dance that was in a cooler in the rear trunk. It went everwhere! The cooler wasn't damaged at all.. Anone who doesn't think God is real needs to  step back and think about why they are still living!   I am so glad none of you were hurt during all this water! It will kill you! I have seen drivers try and go through swollen routes so many times after being warned not to.  Just like agressive drivers on the roads. Their time is going to be short-lived.    Ken Hinson

Hello all,

I am so glad that most all who commented on flood are okay.  Most of you know I work for a National Catastrophe Team for disasters across the entire country.  I am an oversight manager for property claims and a licensed adjuster in every required state.  I have seen all the devastation and loss of life across our beautiful Carolinas and our coastlines.  Priase the Lord you guys are ok. You Bearcats are courageous and brave, born fighters.

Susan, wishing you well with your knee replacement.  My husband had his knee replaced a few years ago.  We thought we were going to be looking at a huge difference in our lives.  Then approximately 4 1/2 months after surgery he stepped up in the stirrup onto a horse and our guide took us over the Continental Divide over the Rocky Mountains in Estes Park, Colorado.  He was so happy that his knee worked better than ever with no pain.  You will soon be dancing again girl. Follow your doctor's orders and therapy and take it easy on that until you are completely healed.  Thinking of you.

So glad we have this site for our class members to communication with each other.  Thanks to all those who created it, maintain it, promote and use it.

Thanks for the messages regarding the flooding in SC, and those classmates experiencing surgeries, or the loss of a loved one. Check "Prayers & Gratitude" in addition to the "Message Forum" for recent comments about Susan's progress since her surgeries on both knees. She currently is in rehab and as far as I know doing well.

Also, did anyone make it to Linda's mother's service on Saturday? I sent her a note that I am getting over brochitis, otherwise would have attended. There is so much going on in our lives at this stage of the Bearcat game. Thanks to all who have joined our class website and use it to stay in touch and keep each other updated and to share your thoughts.

Trying again with my response. Becky, all my thoughts are with everyone and their problems. I am having my own again right now! My right thumb is killing me! Again! Too many portraits at once. I have been getting over my other pains very slowly and now there is another! I cannot address an envelope to send you the other 60 or so drawings. I spent last night with my right hand in epson salt and hot water. The thumb felt a little bit better so I started back on a black and white pencil portrait of a very lovely young lady. That didn't work! I tried drawing her hair with my left hand. Didn't get very much done. But she will turn out wonderfully when I can finish it.  This is the first pencil drawing since 1968. of a pretty girl. Be patient with me. Only time will fix me, ha.ha.     Ken

In response to the messages regarding the "Un Kappa 5th", I just want to let everyone know that we did exist, we sponsored a number of dances with some pretty big groups including Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, The Shirelles, The Drifters, and several others.

We used the name Epsilon Kappa Phi and only wore our cowboy hats at the dances (I still have mine). We were mainly known as the Kappas.

I'm also happy to say that most of us are still around and we see each other all the time. We never, ever want to be annonymous and don't care who knows who we are.  Here is a recent photo:

John: Thanks for the great picture. Could you name everyone for us?  Also, do you have any photos of the boys from earlier times we can add for contrast?  Ah, the good old days. I remember some of those dances.  Even if I did have to be in by 11:00, I did go and enjoy. Some of my girls from school weren't even allowed to date until after high school.  Let the good times roll!
