I recently heard it was hard to walk through a crowded event in CO now without getting high on the fumes. It's bad enough that we have to carry that extra bag for all our medicines, but now we have to remember to pack the gas mask!  Or maybe we could just leave the meds at home and walk through a crowded event without the mask......

By far one of the best views I have ever had from my breakfast table. Look closely and you can see my bride, Jane, in the reflection

Yes, it's hot!  Just got back from the beach and it is hot there too. The only relief was sitting on the screened porch and catching a breeze, which was what I did most days.  Funny! We have had guests at the beach from time to time who rush out to the porch, grab a rocker and say they have waited a long time to catch up on their porch-sitting.  We eat out there, drink our wine out there, talk, watch the neighbors, and watch the wild life (birds, snakes, and a coyote from time to time).  It was more comfortable than sitting in the air-conditioned comfort of the living room!  I think the contrast in temperatures can be uncomfortable once you get used to one thing.  It reminds me of trips to the beach when I was young and most houses were not air-conditioned except for a window unit in the living room, but that was rare. Everyone wanted the bedroom that faced the ocean so they could catch a breeze at night. Our little beach house is very much like the ones we used to rent at OD back in the 60's - great room, 3 bed/2 baths. The most valuable feature is the wrap-around screen porch with a small deck in the back. I tried to sit on the deck one day to get my UVR therapy, but the sun was so hot it stung my skin after only 10 minutes, very uncomfortable, so I retreated to the porch and got a "screen tan".

As I recall those simple vacations, I wondered what you guys did at the beach with your families.  There was a family very close to ours from Durham and we used to meet at the beach every summer.  They  shared the expenses and the parenting duties. We played cards, Monopoly, rode the rides at the pavillion, played putt-putt.  We never went out to eat. I don't recall any restaurants at the beach in the early years,  or at least my parents hid them from us.  We ate a lot of tomatoe sandwiches and cooked burgers and dogs on the grill.   A lot of Kool-Aid  was consumed and we even drank that stinkin' water. If it was boiled and we put a tea bag in it, it wasn't so bad.  It has improved over the years. We wore rubber flip-flops that cost less than a dollar at the drug store. When one blew out, it was easily replaced.  I never had a good hair day at the beach and never will.  We spent all day on the beach playing softball, shellin' and floating on the rubber raft.  My little brother met a friend one day, a dead shark, and drug it around until it smelled so bad Daddy made him bury it. The little guy never had a problem making friends and still has that colorful imagination.

Don't you miss the "good old days"?

Around 1954 or 55.  Got sunburned and had to wear a shirt with the bathing suit! Before sunscreen.

This is a great photo!  Daddy took it with his right hand while catching the ball with his left and he managed to get a great picture of the approaching storm as well as the pitcher, the batter, and the outfielder. 1965. Is that a girl-throw, or what?

Thanks Dee. Remember those sand burs?  They were evil on our bare feet!

Yes, I remember the sand spurs.  I was always bare footed and always got them on my feet going to the beach.

I also remember going on OD beach trips after the school year each summer and the house had no air conditioning and we slept three to a bed.  Can you imagine kids doing that now?  It did not bother us.  We were having such a good time and we knew no different.

My husband was telling me of his trips to the beach with his family and said he really didn't have that much fun. He got sand spurs, played by himself cause there were no kids his age around and didn't like fish.  He said after he discovered girls things changed for him.

Fond memories My parents took us to Wendy Hill every summer. I remember on Sat mornings, kids sold KK donuts for $.50 a doz. we cooked shrimp when I did not like shrimp.Sitting under the umbrella with mom, dad and JuJu. Baby oil and iodine on this freckled skin, paying for it now.My parents chaperoned my friends one summer. We went to OD that year and memories of the Pad and all day and night mastering the Shag. Later That practice dance let me go to the Jimmy Kilgo show in Charlotte, won second place to my surprise. Teased hair and mini skirt may have helped. I now watch the OD webcam and miss Sonny's and the Pad.

Kenneth Reid Hinson has a birthday coming up 8/14.  Most of us are familiar with Ken's beautiful artwork and his great participation in our web site.  Some of us have been concerned about Ken since his mysterious disappearance sometime between November and December of last year.  If anyone has heard from Ken please let us know he is okay.  We are very concerned since none of us have heard from him in such a long time. We hope he is well and has found interests that make him happy.

Jimmy, I go out to MT and WY every July to that area. The Beartooth and Chief Joseph's Highway out of Cooke City are two great drives everyone should see. Totally awesome secenry. I have not riden my Harley out there but thinking of a fly & ride sometime. Thanks for sharing your pic.

Richard, is this the same area?

08/24/16 04:58 PM #565

Richard Heckle

Kay,

The fish in my posted picture was from the Missouri River near Wolf Creek, MT.; about 200 miles NW of Cooke City. We do a 1200 mile loop to fish 7 to 9 rivers. Every other year we include rivers in Yellowstone Park. The area Vic and friends rode is on the NE side of the park. Cooke City is at a high elevation. All it's supplies come to them through the park highway year round. The Bearthooh highway and Chief Josephs Highway are the only highways out of Cooke City to the East. Both are spectacular and I think they are closed in the winter.

I encourage anyone that reads this post to make a trip to this area a bucket list entry. You will not be disappointed.

You are spot on, Richard. Beautiful and at the same time very unpredictable. Beartooth Pass is closed temporarily due to a 13in snow Tuesday night. This is August......think about February. This is a pic from the summit
