Thanks Jerry!  I spent a lot of time at that Hardee's, but think by the time it was the Pop-In I had left for Charlotte. A friend of mine lived just behind the Hardees on John Street.  I haven't heard the names of these streets in 50 years!!  Isn't it funny how our memories work?  I can remember streets from 50 years ago or more but can't remember what I came into the room to get.

Jimmy Furr was married to my sister, Elaine, until his passing about six years ago!  Although a Gamecock graduate, he was a great guy, but never would give me the recipe to his famous chili.  Danny Deas has offered me a King's Ransom for that recipe, but my sister cannot find it.  Jimmy always told me that it was in his Bible.  Through the years, he owned several other businesses & restaurants in the RH area.

Charles, Google "Bible chili" and see what comes up.  I know there is a "Bible cake" that the recipe is quite easy to findThere is not a chili recipe listed in the index of my study Bible, however there are some lovely prayers to bless the chili with if you ever find the recipe. Good luck!

Midget Grill was on Chatham Ave., off Oakland Ave. as I remember. Was reading these post and made me wish I was sitting in the car under those big oak trees eating a cheeseburger or hot dog. Gosh they were good!

liI'm afraid I missed out on a lot you guys did. When you were cruising I was working, first at Hardee's and then Winn Dixie. I had a little red scooter I rode rain or shine in my senior year. Before that I hitched a ride or walked. My parents loaned me their car to go to Chester to date Wylie Ann Roddey on Saturday night after closing the store. I enjoyed music at RHHS for those two years. Buddy Ivey and I borrowed his dad's car once to go to the t-nut house. Sunday's were church and playing ball with my soon to be wife in her front yard. We will be married 49 years June 4. We had 5 children in 9 years. Then she had me neutered at the Tripler Army Hospital when she was 4 months pregnant with the 5th one. It takes a very special person to be a military wife. I was at sea between 7 to 9 and 1/2 months per year. Now we have been retired from the navy 26 years serving congregations in South Carolina and North Dakota. I'm blessed far beyond anything I could possibly ever deserve. About half of our grandchildren and 3 children live close by. The rest are in Charleston, SC area and 3 in Greensboro area.

Life is good, but now we need one extra bag to travel for our medicine.

I really enjoyed the reunion. I hate we could not stay longer to laugh with everyone. I am still rebounding from pneumonia but getting stronger every day.

David, it was good seeing you at the reunion. I hope you are feeling and on the way to recovery. Take care.

Kay Manning (Elrod)

David: Did all that reunion excitement lower your immune system?  I hope you're on the road to recovery soon and you and Wylie Ann can toss that ball around once again.  Many of our classmates worked hard and probably had to grab something to eat on the way to work at some place like the Midget Grill. Hardees had the best fries of any of the current fast-food places. I wonder if they still do. We all had restrictions on our social life back then. There are some that couldn't date until after graduation. Most of the boys I knew worked after school and weekends. Many of us had a curfew.  Couldn't go out on weeknights. I, too, am grateful for the whole journey. We were raised well and comfortably, Sunday School and church on Sundays (Oakland Presbyterian). Weren't we fortunate!

PS: The extra bag for travel - I have more meds, remedies, and utensils in there than makeup or hair products. It takes a lot to maintain these days!

Crane you are wrong. The Midget Grill was at 425 Chatam Ave near the over head RR crossing, Cedar Street did not cross Charlotte Ave.. Richy

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Hey Richy!  My old WTS  friend.  So good to hear from you. I still don't know where the Midget was, but it is unfortunate all those good hamburgers will never be back.  All of us must have had the worst diets in the world, all those fries and burgers. Maybe that's why we need an extra travel bag to haul our meds around in. I say it was worth it!

I was happy to get my high school graduation present very early - 1965 Mustang convertible.  Loved "cruising" the grills; however, was not allowed to go to anything but Hardee's and Park Inn.  Loved going to the TeeNut House.  My dad was very strict - no dating during the week and a very "unreasonable" curfew I thought.  Also, loved Midget cheeseburgers.

I was very saddened to hear of David Inman's passing.  Chris Brumfield (my ex), David and his then wife Elaine Whitton were all expecting at the same time.  Can't remember the others in our group of friends.  We all had such great times back then.  I remember how good looking David was.  My heart is heavy.

My Son and I have been working on this car for about 2 years. 1956 Bel Air Sports Coupe. I had never heard that term until we started working on this one.....to us it was a 2dr Hard Top. Just about done, a few interior items left. I'm posting this in the hopes that Augie Moon(Charles Ferguson) will see as it brings back memories of us working on his in my driveway......without a clue as to what we were doing. Seems like even the color is close, but really don't recall. His might have been green.

Kay - The midget was across the street from the Varsity Rest. behind Skinnys Pure Service station. If you go to the cotton factory you will see Chantam Ave and the overhead RR tracks. If you went under the over head tracks the midget was 1/2 block on your left. I worked a Burns Chevy in the summer and ate at the midget everyday. The owner was Pearl Furr.

Thanks Richy!  I bet you can still taste it!  There is a place at Oak Island called Eric's Grill and he makes the best hot dogs and burgers.  He is about as close to the oldtime burgers we used to get. Hope you are doing well.

Marilyn (Lyn) Baker (Jackson)

Actually the Midget Grill was on Chatham Avenue.  Bob used to ride his bike from State Street to the Grill just to get one of their cheeseburgers.  I'm still hearing how awesome those burgers were!

Thank You.... Kay and Dee

I am getting better. My Assistant Pastor is doing a great job with many of my responsibilities. He is young and eager to learn. I will miss him when he goes back to Liberty U. In the fall.

Thank you again for the prayers.

6/21/16 - Just thinking:  Our generation was around not only for the beginning of rock & roll, but also TV. Look at all the changes that have taken place with TV. We haven't come very far, have we?  We only had a couple of channels, but we also had entertainment and variety. All these channels, tiers with the same channels, and nothing to watch. Where are the stories???? I like stories!  Movies, TV serials, and specials.  They say it is cheaper to do reality TV, but it costs gazillions of dollars to produce TV. I don't get it. It certainly is not being spent on entertainment.  Since I have been forced to find other activities I have lots of time now to do the crossword puzzles, 7 Little Words, Jumbles and work on the web site.  Through no fault of my own, I think I am a little smarter than I used to be. I promised myself I would spend some time each day to learn more about the computer. So far, that isn't going very well.  I still don't know the differenece between a tool bar and anyother kind of bar. I do know what a sidebar is from watching the OJ documentary, but that is another story. All the little pictures at the top of this screen are interesting. I'd like to know what they are for and how to use them. What kind of bar is this called?

I hope all you DADS had a great Fathers Day.  It was lovely at my house only the Dad who lives here just wanted to watch the golf and we kept annoying him with questions and comments.  He took a nap after everyone went home. He rarely naps, but it was a special day! He rarely gets a day that is dedicated to only him. It must have been exhausting.

Kay,

I love Google as a resource to find answers. Also, the Shepherds Center offers a class on computer basics. I took one of their classes several years ago on managing digital media with Picasa. It was so helpful. Here is the link to the Shepherds Center course on computers: http://shepherdscharlotte.org/events/introduction-to-computers-7/

Thanks for all your help on the website. I think you know more than you give yourself credit for. Family and friends are a great resource too. I will be glad to sit with you and answer any questions. I may not know all the answers but will be glad to share what I know (and don't know!).

Becky
