Thank you to the committee for making the reunion a success. You all did such a great job. I had the best time. Seeing old friends from the past was so special. Hopefully, it won't be too long before seeing everyone again.

I had a nice time and enjoyed seeing all my friends from high school. For future references , make sure the facility is handicap accessible . The tables were too close together for wheelchairs. It was very difficult to get around.

Reconnecting with classmates is always special....it is truly amazing that 50 years ago we were graduating from RHHS...located on Eden Terrace...now we are on Medicare and drawing Social Security...I tell my friends that when WTS closed and some of us attended RHHS our senior year....that it was like going to college....325 students....K-12 at WTS....many many more at RHHS(2000?)....we were able  to make a new circle of friends...it was a very positive experience....remembering our departed is also very important...it reminds us that we must enjoy each day...do what we like and like what we do...spending time with family and friends becomes a priority....looking forward to reading more posts about the reunion...Herb in Winnsboro.

Herbie:  That was eloquent!  I was excited about the transfer from WTS to RHHS. We moved around so much as kids that I just felt more comfortable in the larger environment. For you guys who had attended WTS since kindergarten, it must have been a huge adjustment not to be able to graduate with your lifelong friends. But, like you said, it did allow you to meet new people and make a larger group of friends. I was so happy to see you, Clay and Rufus attend. I had thought Richy Williams was going to be there, but don't know if he came. Sorry to see Bill, Richard, Bob D and others didn't make it.  You have always had a personality that adjusts well to any situation and you were never afraid to reach out and make friends.  By the way, old man, you looked really nice in the reunion pictures. I like the beard.  Thanks for your comments.

PS:  I have to comment on the hugs at the reunion, sorry I missed that!  Some of the most sincere, warm, heartfelt hugs ever caught on camera!! Melts my heart!

And silly me, I thought all you WTS folks simply were following me to RHHS since you saw I was having so much fun when I jumped ship one year earlier :-)

George, we missed you terrible, as they say in the South!  The next one will be arranged around your schedule!

5/13/16 - An interesting thing happened to me yesterday. I had a few errands to run over at Park Road Shopping Center. I was walking up to the post office when I spotted a big black Chevy SUV with dark windows parked at the curb. I noticed a woman coming towards me with a disgusted look on her face and mumbling to herself. About that time, the sidewalk got real crowded, four of us in a clump in front of the Soda Shoppe,  my favorite spot for an old-fashioned hot dog and fries.  Two of the men stepped aside as I approached and the third was on the phone not paying attention to oncoming traffic.  As I approached he suddenly turned and ran me down.  My Lordy, it was the Governor! He appologized a hundred times for not seeing me.  I wondered if he was waiting for a table at the Soda Shoppe.  Did he come all the way from Raleigh for a dog?  What are the odds of running into the governor on a daily outing?  Well, considering he is a Charlotte boy, the odds aren't so big.  We used to run into him at Sharon Towers where all our parents were residents. The woman with the attitude earlier in the story - well, she must have been a Democrat.

Kay, how funny.  ummmm wonder if he visited the bathroom.................and, if so, which one?

05/13/16 04:58 PM #502

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Rebecca: He was right in my face, grabbed my arm before I realized who he was. I might have given him the 411 on why we girls didn't want men in our restroom.  It's not that we are insensitive to their needs, it is just we don't like to share that private time with anyone.  No offense to any of the ladies out there, but in a perfect world I wouldn't share my private bathroom time with ya'll either.  Michael Caine, the actor, said when he married his wife he realized this was an issue with her and they began their marriage with two bathrooms with impenetrable locks. I bet his Honor has two bathrooms too.

He evidently did not know who you were! Next time make sure he gives you the same respect as the Governor!

05/14/16 01:17 PM #504

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Larry: He was really quite respectful, grabbed my arm so I wouldn't tumble on the side walk.  I thought it would have been a nice gesture to offer to buy me a hot dog, but I guess he's on a budget. Someone needs to educate our state officials on the choice of gas-guzzling vehicles.  I guess it wouldn't look very impressive to see our governor tooling around in a the more energy efficient Prius. It would be hard to squeeze everyone in.

How are things in North Myrtle? Had a little rain yesterday?

I have fond memories of weekends cruising the grills with my girlfriends. It was permissable at that time to go out with curlers in your hair on Saturday afternoon if you had a date on Saturday night. I guess it was a status thing. I loved watching everyone drive through and especially remember David's GTO. Being a little fuzzy minded though, I don't remember what color it was, yellow maybe? Somebody help me complete the picture. I remember Dana in his Barracuda and Butch and that big long red Chevy , Ralph and Charlie in the gray Plymouth bomb.  With David's passing, it makes me think of good times in a much less complicated world. Unfortunately, all of these memorable people are gone now with exception of Ralph, and we certainly wish him good health and a long, happy life.

(There is a tradition at Harding and West High Schools here in Charlotte with every class reunion from the 1960's they have a special day to "Cruise the King" (Barbecue King) . It is still serving after all these years and it's as good as South 21 any day!  I wish we all could cruise the Park Inn on the Friday before our reunions. I don't think it is there anymore.)

Makes me want a lemon cherry vanilla sundrop :-)

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Definitely! My favorite too.

Loved the lemon cherry sundrop and Park Inn Grill. The first place you would go as soon as you got your drive license. Oh, what wonderful fun memories!

Kay Manning (Elrod)

OR YOUR PERMIT with a licensed driver in the car with you. That would have been my sister or Marsha J.

Who remembers the "Midget Grill" and the cheeseburgers there, not to mention the crusing around before heading back to Cherry Road.

05/22/16 12:22 PM #512

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Laurena, where was the Midget? I might have been there, but can't remember. One thing I do remember is cheeseburgers were so good back then.  Every place had it's own special flavor. The Park Inn cheeseburger with chili and slaw was fabulous, Porter burger with LTO.  The fries were salty and crispy - real salt and real grease - none of this cannola oil and sea salt. Everyone knows fries are not supposed to be a health food, so why try to alter the recipe? No one serves good fries anymore.

Ok. Where was Teen Town?  Corner of Cherry Road and Indiahook or Ebeneezer?

05/22/16 02:24 PM #515

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Linda, The Teenut House was on the corner of Cherry Road and the road that ran beside the drive-in, I think. Was that Ebinport?  I think it was across from Sullivan. That was a fun place to go!!
