Yes - Robert has been informing Berkerly Latimer of his health. It was expected. Billy White gave me two awards one day in class. The first he sat me in the corner in front of the class for shooting the wrong basket in a close basketball game with Fort Mill. Then he took me back to my seat and gave me a badge for my half court shot at the half to take the lead .Billy even pitched soft ball to us in the front lawn of WTS. I reall great teacher he was.

What a great story!  He scared me.  He could be very stern and then quite sweet.(such as your story).  He's the kind of teacher we need in today's schools. I hope I learned from him. I do recall a story we had to write and I really made a mess of it all, but I learned something from all those red marks on my paper. I'm sorry to learn of his passing. I can't seem to find an obit on him. Do you know his middle name? or where he was living? Was it Roanoke?

I remember his middle name now - Boyce!

I looked some things up on the internet and the above information mentions that he taught at RHHS after WTS closed - I did not know that! and in Clover.  Did any of ya'll have him at RHHS?

He must have loved Rock Hill because he did so much research and writing about it.  A life well-lived!

Evidently, Mr. White wrote several books.  Some of our classmates might be interested in reading about the history of the First Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill.  I'm sure many generations of families attended church here.

ALSO...

Historical Note

William Boyce White, Jr. is a Rock Hill native and taught at the Winthrop Training School (WTS) from 1958-1965 and taught at Rock Hill High School following the closing of the high school portion of the WTS. He also taught in Clover before coming to Winthrop. Mr. White is author and historian and was the organist at First Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill from 1945 until he moved to Virginia.

Scope and Content Note

The William Boyce White, Jr. Papers consists of his genealogical research as well as his research related to the history of York County and Rock Hill, SC. The papers also include records and manuscripts relating to several of his published works.

Kay,I think he is the much older brother of our Robert White who went to Central and RHHS, 1966. Can someone confirm this?  We were trying to find Robert about the reunion.

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Dee, you're right!  It is my understanding that Mr. White raised Robert. I don't know when he took on this responsibility, but that is the story I heard. Evidently, their parents died when Robert was young.  Maybe someone could give us some information on this -----Richy, do you know?

Dee, I was wondering that also. I wonder if anyone knows. Yes, Robert was in our 1st grade also,.

Hey Kay - I don't know exactly but I remember call Billy on the phone when I was in the 6th grade and Robert answered the phone ad yelled out Hey Bubbles the phone is for you.

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Bubbles, how cute!  He did have a great sense of humor. I image Bubbles took a lot of insults teaching school being a single man with a limp and you know how mean kids can be. I think Robert did a great job of "humanizing" him for us. My heart goes out to him.  I wonder how many stories there are about him. He helped so many people, worked with gazillions and had so many interests. Thanks for sharing that!

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Can you all help me? I am trying to think of all our classmates who live along the coast. I know Sister Carolyn is in Savannah, Rebecca Littlefield Jones is in Charleston and Chris Brumfield, but I think there are some others in that area. Also, Barbara Bolden in N. Myrtle, Foster  Garner is in Myrtle Beach, Donnie Mussman is Georgetown, Jim Viola and Pat Seely are in Myrtle, John Hunter is Outer Banks.  Are there any others?

What about David Simpson...he has beach house in Carolinas.

Becky Armstrong (Helms)

I heard back from Donnie Mussman. He is staying home and hoping for the best. I texted Rebecca but have not heard back from her. Messaged Freddie McClurkin and have not heard back.

Sheppie and I have a beach house in Isle of Palms, SC. I was going to go stay withv the house but changed my mind since our daughter and two boys are leaving Daniel Island, SC for Columbia. Her husband, a tug boad captain is going to ride it out. Now she says they are all staying. I hope the storm turns to sea some.

Richy:  They are brave! I have heard so many reports I don't know what to believe.  Today, The Weather Channel said Miami was "bracing" for tropical storm winds and rain. That is nowhere near the strength of a cat-4 which they say is Matthew right now. I know you must be worried. We have a house at Oak Island and we have only experienced a cat-1 while we were there and it was no fun.  The winds are relentless, heavy rain. Then it's over 10 or 12 hours later and you're hungry. There is no power, streets are flooded, debris everywhere. I'd rather be away someplace dry and safe. Best of luck to them. Glad you changed your mind.

Becky: I messaged all those people too and haven't heard back. They may be away from home, hopefully, in a safe place.

From Sister Carolyn:    Sister Carolyn Bennett

Hi, Kay

You are not going to believe it, but right now I am in Ft. Lauderdale,FL!!!! I drove down here on Monday with another Sister because her brother had open heart surgery on Tuesday. She was
going to drive by herself and I offered to come with her. Thank God he is stable but in serious condition. We are staying with a friend of her brother and tonight the storm is to hit here. So, the sisters in Savannah are staying put. I don't know when I'll be back to Savannah. We don't want to follow the storm north!!!! Prayers are always appreciated!!!

PRAYERS FOR SISTER CAROLYN, THE OTHER SISTER AND THE PATIENT!!!

From Judy Miller Layton:  Judy Miller

Thank you Kay. We are more inland so its the people on the coast we are most concerned for. Hopefully, we will weather this out with only 40 plus winds. Of course you never know how these things might turn.

From Foster Garner:  Foster Garner

Kay,

Thank you. We boarded up the house on Tuesday and are staying with our daughter in Columbia.

It looks like it is going to be really bad in parts of Florida.

Thank you for thinking about us!

Foster

Laurena Hutto   Laurena: David is not a web site member and I don't know how to contact him. We sure do  wish him the best.  Are you home? or will you have to go to Florida for your job? Thanks for responding to my plea for help!

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Becky: I don't think Jamaica was hit. I hope Freddie and his family didn't relocate to Florida to escape the pending storm. That would suck!

Freddie McClurkin

Laurena Hutto (Taylor)

I sent David Simpson a message through Facebook, and he has evacuated from the Folly Beach area and is safe and sound now.  Hoping Hurricane Matthew does not do a lot of damage near Charleston.  He is thankful for the thoughts and prayers.

As for me, I am in Texas and we are deploying folks so they will be available for areas in need after the storm and access is permitted to areas.  I will be oversighting here and working with claims as they come in.  We are ready for whatever happens.  Thanks for asking about me...you guys are so sweet.

10/06/16 08:03 PM #636

Kay Manning (Elrod)

Laurena: Thanks for letting us know about David.  So many displaced families because of this storm, but better safe than sorry!  We are still trying to find Rebecca Littlefield Jones. I hope she is safe somewhere other than Charleston.

I think, Laurena, you are going to be very busy after this storm. At this time, it is a cat-4. Think of all those families coming home to nothing.  Prayers are needed for so many.  Thanks for your help. Be safe!

Sister Carolyn Ann Bennett, Ihm

Hi, Kay

It's pouring rain and windy here in Oakland Park which is a few minutes north of Ft. Lauderdale.  The news tonight said  we here have  "dodged the bullet" so to speak. The brunt of the storm is up at West Palm Beach. We'll see how the night goes. Sister Is hoping we can get back to the hospital( it was on lockdown) to see her brother. Now Savannah is under evacuation orders. I will find out how the sisters are at St. James in Savannah when I call Friday. Thank you so much for thinking about us. God bless.

Thanks Dee and Sis Carolyn for the updates.  I can't believe Sis Carolyn evacuated to Florida, but as you can see she has her angel with her.
