That was supposed to be a funeral hearse in my story.

That is just about the most embarrassing thing I've ever heard. It's a real shame it has lasted all these years and you have to relive that over and over again.  But, you did try to cheer everyone up - that was good! K

This ad was in the morning paper, “Live longer with Earth Fare”.

I must rush over to Earth Fare and pick up some of the miracle food they are selling.  Is Earth Fare all organic?  What does organic mean in today’s world?  I have seen organic apples at HT and I wouldn’t eat one of those things for fear of biting into an organic worm. They are bruised, discolored, wrinkled, and certainly not appetizing.  Back in the old days, our mothers would bypass these unsatisfactory specimens in the produce department and go for the bananas.

There is a reason why farmers started using antibiotics and pesticides on their products. The results were a better product - bigger, more appealing, fewer germs.

My mother-in-law grew up on a farm that raised some turkeys. She always said turkeys were the nastiest creatures on earth, they would eat anything. Maybe this is why farmers started using antibiotics. You could get worms from eating diseased pork. I think antibiotics served a purpose. Some of the bacterial diseases you can get from diseased meat are salmonella, e.coli, bovine spongiform encephalitis (mad cow disease), and trichinosis, among others.

Yogurt vs pudding.  Don’t be fooled by the deceitful packaging of yogurt. Fact is, yogurt is basically pudding. I read where yogurt could contain up to 24 grams of sugar versus 18 grams of sugar in a serving of Jello Pudding.  All the nutrients come from the addition of milk. I’d go with the pudding, at least it tastes better.

How many of us really need “gluten-free” or is whole grain really better for us?  Have you tasted the gluten-free Cheerios?  Yuck! Tastes like hardened paste.  Trendy though!  I don’t think “gluten-free whole grain" is an option.

Speaking of sugar-free, have you noticed that most sugar-free products are supplemented with more fat content?  They have to put the flavor in somewhere.

Then there is dairy – oh brother!  Whole milk, 2%, skim, lactose-free, almond milk (that would be a fun job, milking almonds!), coconut milk (bigger job than milking almonds), buttermilk, chocolate milk, etc. I know a lactating mom whose doctor told her to drink WHOLE MILK!  OMG, what will that do to her cholesterol? I’ve always been a believer in whole milk, cream, butter. If you start taking things out of something that God thought was perfectly fine when he made it, you’re going to end up with a less than perfect product.

Another problem with grocery stores is the idea that processed foods on the shelf claim they can prevent cancer, heart attacks and reduce blood pressure. These are not medications but basically cereals, juices, and stuff with added vitamins. These foods also are loaded with sugar (energy bars and beverages are basically sugar and caffeine). So, if you eat a bowl of Wheaties in the morning you can almost be guaranteed to live past lunch - unless you try to beat the train at the cross-guard.

The best nutritional information comes from your gut. Should I eat this or not? Would this raw apple provide me with more/less nutrients than this pretty donut with sprinkles? Would this box of processed gluten-free Fruity Pebbles provide me with a longer life than the whole-grain oatmeal?  Is added calcium in this orange juice better for me than the calcium God put in this whole milk?

I'm tired of manufactures and grocery stores telling me what I should eat and should not eat.  We all have our needs and desires and one size does not fit all.  I seriously doubt that shopping at Earth Fare is going to add one nano-second to my longevity.

Should I get the Bud Light or the chardonnay?

Too many choices, my friends!

Happy shopping!

Life is full of so many choices, evrything that I like to eat is bad for me and the yuckie stuff must be consumed as it will make me live longer. The one thing I live in dread of is when they come out with a kosher Harley-Davidson with organic tires........guess I will stop riding when it happens. BTW: You make some very valid points............things our food suppliers don't want you to try and figure out. This is the only thing I know for sure,

You right about that, Jim. I just do what I feel like doing, good or bad. I figure when your number comes up, there is not one thing you can do about. Just do what makes you feel GOOD while you here!!

Thanks Jimmy and Jackie for your responses. All this hoopla also refers to our health care.  Whenever I go to the doctor for a routine check, she always has something new she wants me to do. This last time it was the Hep-C test for the baby boomers. I'm sure you've seen those ads on TV. The key is "ads on TV". I don't believe your health care can be dictated by a TV commercial.  I never did drugs or whatever else they think caused our generation to be infected by, so I don't think the test is necessary. I am a terrible patient in that am very selective on what I think I need.  For example, statins for cholesterol can be more harmful than cholesterol itself. If you have just borderline cholesterole, I would give careful consideration to forego the statins. When my time is up, I will go in peace.  I am sorry if I have undermindeded our great physicians and healthcare providers by being selective in my choices. Too many meds aren't such a good thing either.  I really do get upset with the commercials about cereals and "shakes" that can improve your heart, cholesterol, and blood pressure. What a crock! Everything is designed to play on our fear and sympathy.  My best medicine is a glass of wine and some good music, sitting on the porch  in this beautiful weather.

Wednesday, we left for Atlanta for a family funeral. Arriving outside of Atlanta about 2:30 pm,  this is what we encountered. These photos were actually on line, as my camera could not capture the massive gnarled mess we had become a part of.  As you might remember, I-85 is closed partially because of the fire set under it which destroyed a section about three weeks ago. Then, I-20 was shut down because it buckled and catapulted a motorcyclist into the air. He is in critical condition and the road it closed for repair.  So, the result is all that traffic which used the other highways is now routed to 285.  I had feared the speed on the interstate, but that was not a problem. No one could move. It took about 40 minutes to go 8 miles.  It was amazing how patient Atlanta motorists are.  I did comment, after getting off the interstate, that I believe Atlanta is prettier than Charlotte.  There is no place like home! By the way, note the school bus in the picture. Could you function throughout the day knowing your little one was in that traffic trying to get to school? Also, remember a couple of winters ago when Atlanta roads were a horrible mess when it snowed and downtown released their people go home early, schools were dismissed at the same time and tpeople were stranded for 8 or more hours trying to get home????

A pix of I-20 buckling

I tried to warn you........didn't know it was still that bad though. The school kids prolly don't mind, sit on a bus or sit in class.........both suck!!!! I guess this lets you know what kind of student I was..........just a piece of joy for the staff...........Calvin Burleson and I had many private talks!!!!!

I am going to South Dakota in May because I want to see Mount Rushmore and have not been to the Dakota's. Taking day tours from Rapid City each day. My girlfriend wants to say she has been to North Dakota so we plan on renting a car and driving across the state line and then turning around and driving back. It should take all day. Has anyone been to the Dakota's?

Beck: Refer back to Sept/2016 in Message Forum discussions.  Lorena, Jimmy and others have been there. Lorena got married in Deadwood, I believe.  It's fun reading all those stories again.

Becky - been there, done that.  Loved it.  Visited Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore, and Crazy Horse monument.  Various other local attractions and spent weekend on mission trip on Native American Reservation.  You will truly enjoy the beauty of the west.  Have fun!

Don't remember (suprise, suprise) if I posted most of this or not. You would be much better off, and see more, to keep the rental car the whole time and skip the day tours. The Crazy Hourse Monument is a waste of time and money, hasn't been worked on in 15yrs and is a livehood for the family since the old man died. DON'T MISS: Wildlife Loop Rd., Iron Mountain Rd., and Needles Hwy., which are all very close to Mt. Rushmore. Also Spearfish Canyon is great. You can do all these in one day in a rental as you will not waste time listening to some paid yapper. A good day trip would be Devils Tower, Wy and then on to Little Bighorn Battlefield, about 500mi round trip from Rapid City, but worth every inch. You will be shocked at Custers Demise......nothing you were told in school was true.....typical politician(he wanted to be President) and went against all logic to make himself famous. Don't know how much time you have, but I can guarantee, not enough.

Thanks all. Going for five days and have arranged two day tours already. I want to leave the driving to someone else so understand there are disadvantages. Still will see all the attractions you mention. The exception is Deadwood which we hopefully can stop at on the way north from Rapid  City to the North Dakota state line. I am so excited!

More great news for the Sealy family this week. Andrew and Caroline Blackwood announced they are expecting  their first child in November and our granddaughter Tristen Webster is expecting her first. That will make 6 great grands and 12 grands. There are some perks in growing older.

Just a note to let you know Becky, Deadwood is South of Sturgis and you will not go through there going North from Rapid City. Really a neat town, but just one of many in the area. Have a great trip.

Becky Armstrong (Helms)

Jimmy, thanks for the input. We want the shortest route to North Dakota. When I look at the map it appears heading north from Rapid City  "as the crow flies" will be the shortest route. If we manage to visit Deadwood that would be great too.

I was a listener in the afternoons when not basketball season.  I remember some long running on air commentary about a war between the grapes & the elephants (or something equally ridiculous) and they made it entertaining.  We were so sophisticated.  And wasn't Scott our valedictorian?  No wonder he fled town to establish a new identity (with a little help from Jean :-)
