Post on FB from Steve Rast. He and his wife, Marina, have been through a lot since their marriage.  We pray that both will return to good health!

As many of you know, I was married three weeks ago tomorrow. What a three weeks it has been. I have been working as a remote Senior Tax Advisor with a New York City accounting firm and havbeen working about 55 hours a week since the third week in January. I did take off the Monday and Tuesday mornings on the first week of marriage. The second week of the marriage, Marina, my new wife, came down with flu like symptoms, And I nursed her until I fell ill on Friday night. By last Saturday night early, I was barely breathing. When Marina got me to the hospital about 4 miles from home my blood oxygen was 46%. I found out I had bacterial pneumonia, thank goodness not antibiotic resistant. I was in the hospital until Thursday afternoon. The infection was massive but asymptomatic until last weekend. I am better but still weak still taking antibiotics and Prednisone. What a way to start a marriage. Marina has stood beside me through all of this. It would be hard to go through all this alone for sure. We do marry for better or worse, but I had no idea we we would be tested so early in our marriage. Keep Marina and I in your hearts.

I saw in the Herald Obituaries that Mrs. Alice Linder, age 89, passed away in the Columbia area.  Many will remember her as the Biology teacher at RHHS while we were there.  She made the class very interesting and she was very likable.  It says after retiring from teaching, she became a Methodist minister.

Alice Louise Deissler Linder, 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 1, 2020 after a lengthy illness.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Faith United Methodist Church, 5151 Sunset Boulevard, Lexington, SC. Visitation will follow the service at the church.

Alice was born July 22, 1930 on a farm in South Dakota to the late William Deissler and the late Adeline Schrag Diessler. Alice was the widow of Ira M. Linder. During her life, she was a Biology Teacher at Rock Hill High School and a consultant with the South Carolina Department of Education. After retirement, she was a Methodist Minister for many churches; a volunteer and later a PRN Chaplain for Lexington Medical Center.

Alice is survived by her son, William Linder of West Columbia; her daughters, Terry Linder of Rock Hill and Susan Clavin of Colorado Springs; her granddaughter, Jessica (Nick) Cunningham; her grandson-in-law, Clayton Steele; her great-grandchildren, Alice and Dayton Cunningham. In addition to her parents and her husband, Alice was also preceded in death by her daughter, Lucy Linder; her granddaughter, Annah Steele; her brother, Kenneth Diessler.

I hope everyone is doing well during this global crisis. I forget I am part of the group that is most vulnerable because of age alone. My how time does fly.

Don't know about y'all, but I'm tired of being classified as "elderly". I'm just a little "older", thank you!

Everyone stay vigilant about this thing, though. We still have lots to teach all those that follow us.

You spring chickens need to relax. I was the oldest (I think) in our class so I am probably still the oldest!  I turned 19 in January 1966.......anyone older?

Agreed. As I used to tell my Marines regarding frustrating events like this: "That's life in a big outfit!"

I sit on my deck this awesome night and comtlipate this Covid-19 pandemic. My chronological age says self isolate, but my physical status says keep pushing the boundaries, but be cautious. I think about ancient times when the Passover took place and many perished. I think God has a plan for all of us and we serve humanity at his will. We have lost many classmates over the years and we are burning out our candles quickly now. I hope you all stay safe, and take care of yourselves. This has been a hell of a ride and it's not over yet! Keep the Faith! Best wishes !

Dear Classmates,
I am keeping everyone in my thoughts and prayers as our country faces this invisible enemy. It surely is something we have not ever faced before. Our faith is being tried also, but I know the Lord is at our side. Although we cannot gather in our churches at this time, we can certainly pray for each other wherever we are. Please take of yourselves and your families. We will all get through this. Can't you just hear God saying I GOT THIS!! DON'T WORRY!!  ðŸ˜‡

God bless each of you !

Sister Carolyn

Thank you all for your words of comfort and assurance. This afternoon as my husband and I were walking in the neighborhood, we saw neighbors outside talking to one another (at a distance of course). We passed other couples and individuals taking a stroll. At other houses we passed, we saw families outside in their yards with their children, some with the grill on preparing for dinner, or working in their gardens. But there were few cars when we walked along Park South Drive. Usually people are driving to and from the South Park Mall or headed to dinner at one of the many restaurants not too far away. Everyone is heeding the warning to hunker down and that is a good thing. The next few weeks I hear will be the most revealing as far as the impact from the Coronavirus. As more people are tested, more cases of the virus will increase and there will be more reports of deaths. These are strange times. There are no nuclear threats or bombs exploding, just this invisible enemy forcing us to lay low and to take cover. Let's pray all the warnings and mandates do not prove necessary for much too longer. Be well, be safe, stay in touch as you hear new developments, and say a prayer for our healthcare workers especially.

Just finished going to church on-line. The text our pastor used was from John16: 31-33 which talks about tribulation in the world, and that as Christians, we are not left alone. These times are trying for a lot of people worried about contracting the virus, obsessing over toilet paper, putting chicken in the pot, etc. The media, CDC, government, the state - all talk about how the disease can be fatal to the elderly. I guess most of us resemble that, although I don't feel elderly. Perhaps it is due to the approximately 20 pills I take per day. I am also up to date on my PREVNAR 13 and 23 innoculations.

I have been in a similar situation before. That would be Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The issues then were whether or not Saddam Hussein would use his weapons of mass destruction. There was anthrax, bio-terror, for which we received anthrax shots. There was the threat of nerve agent attack for which we took pyridostygmine bromide pills, and if you got hit by nerve agent, we had a Mark IV chemical agent antidote kit. If you still had the presence of mind after an attack and weren't twitching too bad, you could give yourself two injections in the thigh to lessen the effect. And Saddam had the SCUD missiles which he fired at us periodically, preferably between 2:00 and 3:00 AM. Then there was the nasty Republican Guard, supposedly the baddest of Saddam's bad.

What did I do? I prayed for God's provision and protection. He gave me peace. That's what we need to be doing now as well. Be careful and stay safe, Classmates!

In times of uncertainty, I find it helpful to focus on the good news.  Because the good news stories are frequently overlooked by the media, perhaps we can write our own and share them amongst ourselves.

On a local channel yesterday, there was a young mother in the grocery store who was paying for her groceries only to find out her credit card was denied. She had only a small amount of money in her purse that would not cover her $160 bill.  The lady behind her offered to pay for her groceries and the young woman said she could not let her do that because her bill was so high. The person behind the nice lady offering to pay then offered a portion and the person behind that person offered a portion and before she knew it her groceries had been paid for.  This is the American spirit at its finest.

I have a friend who works at Trader Joes on a part-time basis. She said last week she was working the check-out when a young mother came through her line with her two little boys. After a number of items had been rung up the mother started asking "how much is it now" to make sure she could pay. My friend told her it didn't matter, her bill was taken care of.  She said she couldn't bear to see people do without necessities in a time like this and she certainly could afford to pay for milk and bread to help someone in need. We both had a good cry over her story, but that's what friends are for.

Ideas to keep children busy while practicing social distancing - please feel free to make suggestions:  As long as we can still get out to Lowes or Home Depot, buy your grands some seed packets, seed starter soil or some potting soil, and some little planting cups. Let them discover the joys of gardening from the beginning of the growth process.  Include some young flowering plants or vegetables that can be planted in containers until the ground is ready for transplanting. Both of you might enjoy an herb garden for your kitchen or porch. Being outside is good for us and we all could use some fresh air and sunshine.

My husband called me from Food Lion yesterday and said they had gotten in some toilet paper. He said they had the aisle blocked off with a guard at each end while they stocked the shelves - a line was beginning to form from each side of the aisle. He was laughing yet he came home with a 4-pack.

A story from my brother:  My sister-in-law came home from the grocery store the other day and told my brother, "When it gets dark I want you to go out to the car and bring in the toilet paper I just bought!"

Please share your good news stories.

Well spoken,Lewis! God is in control!  We're being encouraged to wash our hands for 20 seconds to fight this invisible enemy. Might I add we also use this 20 seconds to pray, asking for God's protection, guidance, and peace. Keep the faith, classmates, and stay well.
