I so loved reading Sheila's entry in her profile for the Class of '59 of RRHS. It was filled with joy and it is clear that she loved her life, and all the adventures she was enjoying. How tragic for her family. She was happy with where she was, at peace with the life she had built. That is a feeling to be cherished. While we mourn her untimely death as unfair, we must celebrate a life that was well lived and a way of life that was loved. How I wish we had all had one more opportunity to be with her but in a strange way, many of us would not have been in touch at all had it not been for this 50th reunion year. May God Bless her soul. Judy said it all so beautifully. I just smiled as I read Sheila's profile and continue to feel so lucky to have known this bright, funny, happy and busy individual at my same age. She is and inspiration to those of us that don't look outside our boxes to begin new projects no matter what our ages. In Sheila's honor I hope many of us will look into interesting new activities in the years to come.
Hi Everyone -- I was lucky enough to get back in touch with Sheila quite a few years ago. We managed to write each other about once a year -- at Christmas time! Her husband, Dusty, is an excellent photographer, and their card was always homemade with a beautiful photo of nature in places where they had traveled. Carol Smith Evens and I decided to travel to California about 3 years ago, and had a wonderful "reunion" with Sheila, remembering our high school years and catching up on the many years following. Dusty even played his guitar in the background as we swam in their pool and gabbed. Their house is beautiful -- right on top of a hill, and on a really clear day, you can see the ocean, which is miles away. Sheila was so happy, and she and Dusty were great hosts. Sheila had a twinkle in her eyes, and a wonderful sense of humor, as well as a quiet humility -- even though she had accomplished so much in her lifetime. We met some of her girlfriends, and they loved her -- we all had a great time together. I have to admit I was shocked, and then so sad, when Dusty called (my heart goes out to him) And I am so thankful that we had a chance to see each other. My husband, Jim and I visited them the next year -- lots of good memories. Jayne Gaines Schriver
Sheila was coming here to stay for the reunion. It was the first time she would have been back to Ohio in years. Jayne Gaines Schriver and I had had such a great visit at her home overlooking Catalina Island. The home was filled with instruments, teaching materials, cooking books, pottery wheels etc. She loved her gardens and talked about how close the fires had come. Those of us in Girl Scout Troop 17 will never forget the many camp-outs, badges and preparation for the big trip to Bermuda. That was the first time I had ever been on a train, plane or cruise ship. Sheila's mom, our leader, and her hubby chaperoned us. As it turned out later we found out her mom was suffering from cancer. Sheila was so giving a person. She was so patient with me in precalc. I really wanted to go on to be a math teacher. The calculus caught up with me again in college but Sheila had gone to Ohio Wesleyan...I was in her wedding and was so happy to see how she loved California. The horrific accident that claimed her life while on the way home from a concert leaves a sadness hard to overcome. We must all live each day fully and enjoy our loved ones and friends.
