Dear Father Ned, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! At this time of year I think we all tend to remember past Christmas seasons. Do you remember what classes were eligible for the children's choir? I remember there being a huge number of us and how exciting it was to sing for Midnight Mass and again Christmas morning.
May you have a happy and blessed New Year!
Where have all the years gone. Father Jerome
Sorry I missed your birthday Ned! I pray you have a blessed and profitable 81st year.
Happy belated birthday Father Ned. We both turned 80 within two weeks of each other, I find this one a bit more difficult to adjust to than the previous ones. I wish you all the best in this new decade.
Gary, thank you for the new pictures. I remember being really impressed with the school when starting 10th grade but from your pictures it looks like it has undergone a number of upgrades over the years.
My middle daughter graduated from U C Santa Barbara a number of years ago and moved to Portland OR two years ago. We have been to Santa Barbara a number of times over the years, a nice town with lots of things to do. We live in the mountains of northern CA about an hour from the Oregon border so the traffic there is a bit overwhelming for us.
Sandra, thank you for sharing your story. Art Barnett must have been an exciting influence in your life. My father-in-law was a Big Band leader in the 30's and early 40's and while Mary and I did not share directly in his experiences (we’re not THAT old) it did have its influence. I remember with great fondness spending a couple of evenings at the Cedar Point ballroom above the arcade listening to Stan Kenton and his band.
We attended a concert at Cedar Point with my in-laws when Harry James was playing there. My Father-in-Law knew him and invited him over to our table during a break. We also saw Louis Armstrong at Cedar Point. We attended a Count Basie Concert in Oberlin ; again, with my in-laws. We were able to see Buddy Rich and his band in downtown Cleveland. There were a few others but these stand out in my memory. It was such a thrill to hear such great music by the best bands in the business. We still listen to a lot of recorded big bands but it is nothing like standing in front of the bandstand.
While we were going to school in Toledo, and later back in Cleveland, we took every opportunity to go to Big Band concerts and dances. It was really the end of an era and I consider myself fortunate in having been able to participate in it in some small way. Stan Kenton was the easiest to see simply because he traveled with his band more extensively than the other bands. Most of the times that we saw the Kenton Band Mary was still in nursing school. She had a curfew and for one of the dances we were not going to be able to make it back in time, (another sign of our age), so Mary signed out to stay with a fellow student who was going home for the weekend. After the dance we spent the rest of the night driving around with Kenton’s base player, John Wurster, who had been a friend for a number of years.
Calvin, I am glad to see that you are going to attend the class reunion. I know you are the driving force behind this class site and appreciate all of your time and effort. (Thanks also to Sandra who I believe takes care of the updates and holiday postings.)
I know your birthday is coming up later this week so Happy Birthday! Your trip to the reunion seems like a great gift to yourself.

Father Ned, Happy Birthday! I see by your postings that you are now retired — as retired as priest can be. I have been following the postings about the upcoming class reunion. I probably would go if I were closer than California.
Dear Judy, what nice thoughts for the fourth of July. Indeed those of us still around have been blessed. The world has changed so much in the waning years since high school. I am grateful to have had such a good grounding in what is right, ethical and proper. Filtering out the nonsense and immoral to concentrating on family and loved ones is so very important.
Wishing you the best. Father Jerome Zubricky
