Congratulations Larry!! And a wonderful tribute! My brothers played in Little League when Larry played & my Dad always said it was very clear Larry was "very special"!!  As a baseball fan, it's been really fun to watch Larry's career over the years!

Thanks for sharing!!

Thank you Bill for sharing the details of Larrys determination and successes in pro baseball. Over the years I always felt pride to hear about Larry's career and his roots in Sacramento. I also spent many Sat at Wm Land Park watching my brother Robby ,play Little League as well. Larrys early years in Little league may have laid the seeds for his later successes along with his family's support.

I cannot think of another McClatchy athlete who has achieved the success that Larry Bowa has.  He deserves many, many accolades and it is wonderful that he is being honored.  Well over due!!!!

I regret never contacting Larry while he was with the New York Yankees as I lived in the general area at the time.

I used to tell my friends that believe it or not, he never made the high school team as a starter.  They didn't believe me until the Yankee broadcaster interviewed Larry and asked if the story was true about not making his high school varsity baseball team.  Larry curtly answered "never made it."   I chuckled then and I chuckle now.

Way to go Bowa.

The Land Park Volunteer Corps will dedicate a Memorial Bench for Jack Peyton and his beloved dog Rosebud on Thursday, July 28th at 6:00 PM at Doc Oliver Field in Land Park by the first base side of the baseball diamond. If you are not sure where to go, you can you can easily find directions on the internet for Doc Oliver Field.

The Land Park volunteers wanted to build this bench to remember as well as honor Jack because he and his dog were so popular among the many visitors to Land Park.

That's awesome!  And one more reason I often wish I still lived in Sac, so I could attend important events such as that one. Hopefully there will be a good turnout from our beloved class of '63 šŸ˜

Thanks so much for the info, Bill--a lovely memorial bench, well deserved!  Although thousands of km away, I'll be there in spirit on the 28th.

Hugs, Diana

This is a wonderful way to pay tribute to our friend Jack & his steady companion Rosebud. Wish I could join each of you on the 28th. Jack will be in my thoughts that day.

Reach out and touch someone each day.

What a great tribute Jack. I nice to see a fellow classmate whose life was remembered.

It is sad that someone has to die in order to be honored.

Every day, I thank my fellow servicemen and women for their sacrifice in serving our nation. I especially honor those who their all for our nation. A Veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to The United States of America for an amount of ‘up to and including my life.

It is great to see all those from the “Class of ‘63” who served our nation.

I think of the fun times I had at McClatchy:

  • Working on the school newspaper in the print shop
  • The long hikes from one class to another, especially when you class was in the last temporary classroom.
  • Going to football games, basketball games
  • Mr Simmons' Speech Class..loved those debates
  • Sneaking off to McDonalds for lunch and then trying to outfox the security
  • Ms Caldwell's History Class

I really enjoyed the 50th Reunion and enjoy this web site. Kudos to Dave and his team for putting it together and maintaining it.

I hope there will be another Reunion; I know it takes a lot of time and effort.

All the best to all

Ron

I'm sad to report that I found out today that Jeannie Zazzi passed away sometime in the last two months. I've just released a memoir in which she was a minor character and I wanted to send her a copy. When I tried to call her phone number in Berkeley, it had been disconnected so I called a few agencies in the area and this was all the information I could obtain. We would talk several times a year and even though her health was frail, she had always remained upbeat. I'll miss her spirited presence.

Richard, thanks for the report. Sad to read it. Wish we'd had a chance to get everyone together again.--Dennis

Thanks so much Richard. For sharing ......I agree with you Dennis, we need to connect with our classmates more often. I remember Zazzi from way back at Sutterville elementary school and she was always a free spirit and full of fun. RIP dear friend    Happy Healthy Holidays to all heart

I feel so sad to read that news Richard. I did keep in touch for many years but since a couple reunions ago we lost touch. She was definitely a free spirit and had a unique quality about her. I visited with her when she was a dealer in Reno if I remember the city correctly and we had a crazy time!

Thank you, Richard--I am so sorry to hear of Jeannie's passing--she was so lively and had a great sense of humor--always "up for something"!  As classmates have said, it is unfortunate that many updates now are about the disappearance of our chums--alas.

All you Lions, keep your chin up--(or chins?  if you have more than one?  )--and let's make the most of the time we have.  Carpe diem, tempus fugit.  My warmest wishes to all of you for a happy holiday season and peace and good health in the New Year.

I am so sorry to hear about Zazzi.  She lived 4 houses down from me on Parkridge Road and we were very good friends.  She was a smart and interesting kid and I have had the chance to have several conversations with her over the years.  The last one being right before our 50th party.  She had had a stroke and was in a assisted living situation and was still smart as a tack.  I will miss her spirit. joeann schoenman matthew.

I was so sorry to hear about Jeannie. I have known her since kindergarten.  She was always such a good friend. I always loved her pigtails!!  The last time we spent time together was several years ago when Kristen Otto invited Frani Beckstead, Carol Elliott, Curly Thompson, Jeannie, Sue Springle, Linda Bell & I to her cabin for 3 days.  We had a ball!!  It's so sad to think Linda, Sue & now Jeannie are gone.  We just have to embrace each day and live life to the fullest!!  Who knows what tomorrow will bring!!  Happy Holidays to each & everyone of you, dear friends!!!  Much love to you all, Jan

Thank you Richard for sharing the sad news of Zazzi passing. She was always with a smile, up beat, and sharp as a tack.

It always sad to read of one more passing of another classmate  from the class of "63" it reminds us of just how short our time on earth is.

I urge those of you in Sacramento area to stay in touch often, reach out to make that call, meet for a walk or coffee. Keep making memories to share.

May joy surround you this season and stay.

Seems it never stops--some more sad news, I'm afraid.  This time, it's a French teacher, Carolyn Brown (Suter), who was instrumental in inspiring me to make my life in France (where I've lived since 1967).  She had been in an assisted living facility in Rancho Cordova, and thank goodness I was able to see her in June 2015 when I visited Sacto.  She passed away on Jan. 2, and had made arrangements to donate her body to science at U.C. Davis.  She would have been 95 or thereabouts this coming July.

Carolyn was in love with the language and culture of France, and shared it generously with her students.  In June 1963, the day after graduation, she headed off with Bob Bloomberg, Joan Koblick, Waynette Casey, Patti Dillon, Cathy Cope, and me for a grand tour of Europe, including an intensive language programme at the Université de Grenoble. What a time we had, thanks to her outstanding planning--PRE-internet, mind you!--and good spirit.  Bob brought along his guitar, and we sang our way along those long, long train rides: "500 Miles" was a favorite. Some of us (ahem...no names) managed little escapades--(see, there were these 2 gorgeous Italian guys studying there in Grenoble..ah là là...).

If any of you remember special teachers, PLEASE DON'T WAIT to tell them how much you appreciated them...after all, they are part of who we are, n'est-ce pas?  -- and it makes them sooooo happy to know that.

Diana, nice to read your comment. Great teachers are a gift. Roger Patching, Margie Rodda, and I used to take our City College French teach, Virginia Sturdevant, to lunch annually after we'd gone on and graduated from our respective schools. She was a dear and thoroughly enjoyed her frequent trips to France. She was one of the best teachers I ever had. We are enjoying a really big slew of major snow storms up here in Tahoe. Our plan is to travel on a performance tour this April with Toccata Tahoe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus. We are scheduling concerts for Salzburg, Vienna, and Prague. Maybe you'd like to meet up with us. Best regards, --Dennis

Rich, I agree with your philosophy 100 per cent. Your testimonial to Jeannie was touching, well spoken, and reminds us how important it is to enjoy each day and each other. Live is a great adventure to be savored and enjoyed. Have you ever read Annie Freedman Fantastic Traveling Funeral?  If not I suggest you and others give it a read. This lady had the right idea of how to celebrate a life.

Best to you in 2017. Diane Malone

Diane,

I'll put it on my reading list. Busy right now writing and editing the next segment of my Hippie Adventure Series so it may be a while before I get to it. Thanks for the recommendation.

A good year to you too.
