Will you need a hotel room for both Friday and Saturday nights?

No

Do you still see/talk to/hang out with any classmates? If so, with whom?

JIm Sonnenberg, Marc Johann, Gary Cox, Larry Wehner, Dave Kutch, Tom Putz, Bob Wendt, Linda Furhop...

Where is the coolest place you've ever visited? Tell us about it.

Space Camp - Huntsville Alabama

Watching kids being being turned every which way but loose on a 3 axis gyro. I don't think I want to try that....(upchuck city). My grandson...yep he'd want to try it. Lots of cool stuff to see, including a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird (spy plane).

Which of the following have you done?

Lived one of my dreams Snorkeling on the Napali coast in Kauaai
Swam in the ocean Saint Augustine Beach, FL (undertow was a little scary), Snorkeling on Hawaii
Been on TV TV 5 News....Bitching about having to replace my "forever" centennial license plate. When I bought it in 1996, at a premium price, I was told that I would never have to replace it, and that I could transfer it to ANY vehicle at no charge. Their excuse...my plates were probably rusting. That's a neat trick for an aluminum plate.
Watched the sunrise with someone Sunrises & Sunsets in Red Rock country (Arizona, Utah) with my wife
Been in the back seat of a police car The day I crashed tested my brand new Honda 350 at the intersection of Holland and Outer Drive on my way to work. Thank God I was wearing a helmet.
Danced my heart out When I met the girl (who later became my wife) at a fraternity dance party in Flint, MI
Made a prank call (since you were in middle school?) Lots of these to old friends and classmates...I'm pretty good at disguising my voice with a foreign accent.
Had a life altering experience When I adopted my daughter Tara in 1976. She was only 6 weeks old, born in Bogota Columbia.
Laughed until I cried Getting together with friends and classmates reminiscing about our antics growing up and in school.
Scuba dived Back in my 20's I got my scuba certification (fresh water diving in Michigan).

Which sports or groups were you involved in while at DMHS? How did they impact your life?

Special Math grades 9 - 12. That really made things easy for me in my freshman and sophomore years at GMI. My freshman year was more or less a cake walk.

School Story:

When I signed in at the 25th DMHS reunion, Therese Drouillard asked me if I was the guy who fell through the ice on the reflection pond while trying to collect some loose change that had been thrown onto the ice. I sheepishly replied..."That'd be me." Who knew that I would be tagged for such an obscure event over 25 years later. I can laugh about it now, but it wasn't so funny at the time.

What did you want to do, or think you were going to do when you finished high school? How did that work out for you?

I wanted to get a degree in engineering. I applied and was accepted by Saginaw Steering Gear as a co-op student at General Motors Institute in Flint, MI (Now Kettering University).

I Graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from General Motors Institute in 1971.

I worked for GM and Delphi for 37 years, and retired a month prior to my 55th birthday.

Retired life is good :)

What did you do right after high school?

I went to work for Saginaw Steering Gear as a co-op student. In August of 1962 I started school at GMI in Flint, MI.

If you went on to further your education, where did you go? What was the outcome?

Attended General Motors Institute (now known as Kettering University) in Flint, MI, where I received a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering.

If you went to college, were you in a Sorority or Fraternity? If so, which one?

Sigma Alpha Epsilon

High points of your life since high school?????

Getting married to my wonderful wife, Sara, and raising to great children, Christopher and Tara (both of whom also graduated with college degrees).

Three grandchildren (Hannah Weber, Madison Weber, and Brenden Weber).

What's on your bucket list?

Skydiving

Travel much? What's the farthest you've been from home?

Yes Hawaiian Islands are the farthest I've been away from home in Saginaw, MI (Well worth the trip).

Famous or interesting people you've met?

Saw Elvis a couple of years ago...at McDonalds. I told him I was one of his biggest fans.
His answer..... (see below).

Uh...thank ya. Thank ya very much..... (Get's laughs when I do my Elvis impersonation). :-)

Met Buffalo Bob on Ojibway Island when I was 6...Does Howdy Doody count?

What is your highest level of technological expertise?

I have more technical skills than these questions cover.

Assuming you are a retiree (or at least slowed down), what do you do with your "extra time"?

Travel
WHATEVER I want to!

In what sports or activities do you participate now?

Armchair quarterback :)

I was left handed and forced to be right handed when I was very young. So... I write with my right hand, throw with my left hand,..bat right handed...catch a baseball with a glove on my left hand (which means I have to take the glove off to throw the ball from right field (the position that crappy baseball players get to play...if they get to play at all).

I was the shortest kid in my class in grade school, and most of high school. So sports were never my strong suit. Football was definitely a "no go" for a short kid like me.

So, I compensated for all of that by studying hard and excelling academically, especially in math and science. I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the special math program early in my freshman year. That really paid off for me.

My son Chris is a great father who has encouraged his son and two daughters to participate in athletic activities including skiing, kayaking, and golfing and karate. My 9 year old grandson is really gifted at sports, especially baseball and track and field. So I get to enjoy sports vicariously though my grand children.

When/why was the last time you really belly laughed?

Too numerous to mention. Every time I get together with old friends or classmates and we talk about old times. A group of my classmates from Peace Lutheran School celebrated a 51 year reunion in 2013. It was a really a blast. The DMHS 25th anniversary reunion was awesome. My wife, Sara, and I had a really great time.

I was looking forward to the 50th high school, which unfortunately did not happen. So we'll have to make up for that with a great 51st anniversary celebration.

What would we be surprised to know about you?

I'm a prankster. I'll prank just about anybody for a good laugh. Nothing malicious or demeaning, just to break the monotony.

At work, of our favorite tricks was to put a box of ball bearings on somebody's drafting (drawing) table. The bottom of the box being mostly cut away, with a thin piece of cardboard taped to hold the ball bearings from falling out. After placing the loaded box on the drafting table, we'd adjust the table to a slight angle, and cut the tape holding the cardboard at the bottom. The best time to do this was during lunch.

When the "prank-ee" returned from lunch, they would invariably pick up the box, releasing hundreds of bearings, and creating quite a noticeable amount of noise. Everyone would have a good laugh, except perhaps the "prank-ee".

I should mention that I was (more than once) a prank-ee of this trick before I became a prank-er. It was all in good fun, and nobody took it personally.

In today's day and age, it might well be looked upon as workplace harassment.

At this time, do you think you'll be coming to the reunion??? (We sure hope so!!!!!)

Yes

Debbie Meschke and I were classmates for four years in Spanish class at DMHS.  She always beat me for the most outstanding student in Spanish (at the DMHS honors banquet). She and I shared the outstanding student in Spanish award in our senior year.  Debbie was always so quiet and reserved....quite the opposite of me.  I  was glad to have known her.  Many thanks to Señor Trudeau for making Spanish fun for Debbie and I.  Those were happy days.

Anatoli was a friend and neighbor of mine when we moved into our house at 3406 Sherwood in 1962.  His neighborhood friends, including me, called him Al.... [hmmm, now I've got that Paul Simon song running through my brain..."I can call you Betty..."OK Tom...back on topic"]

Al liked to play basketball and he also had a backboard at his house.  I really loved to shoot hoops, and was pretty good at sinking set shots...but alas, I was not a very good dribbler....and I was way too small to ever play on the high school team.  So it was really great to be able go over to Al's house and play "around the world", shooting set shots from various positions.

I was very saddened to learn that Al had died.  I can still picture that friendly soft spoken young man in my mind's eye.  We took the same bus, so I saw him at the beginning and end of the almost every school day.

Rest in peace, my friend.  May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Dave was in classmate of mine for four years in Special Math.  A smart and funny (ha ha) guy.  He was also a very good swimmer, and was on the DMHS swim team.  Dave was always fun to be around.  After graduating from Douglas MacArthur, he had planned to attend the University of Michigan... and he definitely had the "smarts" to succeed.  About a year or so after we graduated from DMHS, I learned of Dave's death (in a car accident).

I will always remember Dave's playful demeanor and his zest for life.  Taken too soon.  Rest in Peace, my friend.

Linda was in many of my classes at Douglas MacArthur.  What a wonderful young lady...wise beyond her years.  She seemed to learn even the most difficult courses effortlessly.  Linda made many friends during her years at Douglas MacArthur, including many teachers.  Linda had a great sense of humor, too.  After graduation, I saw her only one more time.  It was at a Christmas get-togeher at Tom Putz's house in 1967.  When I saw Linda, I exclaimed "Haenlein...so good to see you again!"  She laughed and said "Merry Christmas Webbie...and it's Peterson, not Haenliein", and she flashed her wedding ring.  I can't imagine a sweeter girl, except perhaps my wife Sara.  I'll always treasure the great times we had in Special Math with Mr. McGinty and Miss Briggs.  It was like family.

I remember listening to Linda laughing almost uncontrollably at 3 upperclassmen lip synching to the Beatles "She Loves You (Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!) on stage in the school auditorium.  They were wearing "mop top" wigs and would shake their heads wildly during the Ooooohs. I really got a kick out of her reaction to that performance.  She was so full of life...and that is the way choose to remember her.

Rest in peace, Linda.  If I get to heaven, I know you'll be there.

I can't say enough good things about Jim Krebs.  He was smart, he was funny...and an all around great classmate.  Most importantly he was a good friend.  I've got a great pic of Jim pouring water on me while we were at a pool party with our special math class (at Tom Putz's home)  I get a laugh every time I see that photo.  I was saddened to learn of his death, but will always carry good memories of him in my heart.
