Debbie Meschke and I were classmates for four years in Spanish class at DMHS. She always beat me for the most outstanding student in Spanish (at the DMHS honors banquet). She and I shared the outstanding student in Spanish award in our senior year. Debbie was always so quiet and reserved....quite the opposite of me. I was glad to have known her. Many thanks to Señor Trudeau for making Spanish fun for Debbie and I. Those were happy days.
Anatoli was a friend and neighbor of mine when we moved into our house at 3406 Sherwood in 1962. His neighborhood friends, including me, called him Al.... [hmmm, now I've got that Paul Simon song running through my brain..."I can call you Betty..."OK Tom...back on topic"]
Al liked to play basketball and he also had a backboard at his house. I really loved to shoot hoops, and was pretty good at sinking set shots...but alas, I was not a very good dribbler....and I was way too small to ever play on the high school team. So it was really great to be able go over to Al's house and play "around the world", shooting set shots from various positions.
I was very saddened to learn that Al had died. I can still picture that friendly soft spoken young man in my mind's eye. We took the same bus, so I saw him at the beginning and end of the almost every school day.
Rest in peace, my friend. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
Dave was in classmate of mine for four years in Special Math. A smart and funny (ha ha) guy. He was also a very good swimmer, and was on the DMHS swim team. Dave was always fun to be around. After graduating from Douglas MacArthur, he had planned to attend the University of Michigan... and he definitely had the "smarts" to succeed. About a year or so after we graduated from DMHS, I learned of Dave's death (in a car accident).
I will always remember Dave's playful demeanor and his zest for life. Taken too soon. Rest in Peace, my friend.
Linda was in many of my classes at Douglas MacArthur. What a wonderful young lady...wise beyond her years. She seemed to learn even the most difficult courses effortlessly. Linda made many friends during her years at Douglas MacArthur, including many teachers. Linda had a great sense of humor, too. After graduation, I saw her only one more time. It was at a Christmas get-togeher at Tom Putz's house in 1967. When I saw Linda, I exclaimed "Haenlein...so good to see you again!" She laughed and said "Merry Christmas Webbie...and it's Peterson, not Haenliein", and she flashed her wedding ring. I can't imagine a sweeter girl, except perhaps my wife Sara. I'll always treasure the great times we had in Special Math with Mr. McGinty and Miss Briggs. It was like family.
I remember listening to Linda laughing almost uncontrollably at 3 upperclassmen lip synching to the Beatles "She Loves You (Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!) on stage in the school auditorium. They were wearing "mop top" wigs and would shake their heads wildly during the Ooooohs. I really got a kick out of her reaction to that performance. She was so full of life...and that is the way choose to remember her.
Rest in peace, Linda. If I get to heaven, I know you'll be there.
I can't say enough good things about Jim Krebs. He was smart, he was funny...and an all around great classmate. Most importantly he was a good friend. I've got a great pic of Jim pouring water on me while we were at a pool party with our special math class (at Tom Putz's home) I get a laugh every time I see that photo. I was saddened to learn of his death, but will always carry good memories of him in my heart.
