No

Do you still see/talk to/hang out with any classmates? If so, with whom?

Yes. Diane White is a Facebook friend.

Where is the coolest place you've ever visited? Tell us about it.

I just returned from Plains, Georgia, where I attended the Sunday School class taught by former President Jimmy Carter, which was very cool. Then we spent 3 days in Tybee Island, Georgia, near Savannah, which is rich with early US history.
Our family trip to Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula -- where we were awakened every morning by Howler Monkeys -- was also pretty memorable.

Which of the following have you done?

Lived one of my dreams Hiked the Grand Canyon - up and down twice.
Swam in the ocean Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean
Skipped School Mostly early morning classes in college
Been on TV As a member of the Nashville School Board
Watched the sunrise with someone With friends while staying in Mt. LeConte Lodge in the Smokies (after hiking up Mount LeConte)
Been in the back seat of a police car Got caught in a DUI stop for not having my headlights on after a dinner party. Fortunately passed the breathalyzer test and released.
Ran a Marathon Not quite, but walked the Vancouver Half Marathon.

Which sports or groups were you involved in while at DMHS? How did they impact your life?

In the spring of the 9th grade, I played the triangle in the band with plans to be a majorette in the fall. Sadly, my family moved to Grand Rapids that summer, so my dreams of triangle/baton mastery were never achieved.

School Story:

Had to leave after 9th grade - family moved to Grand Rapids.

What did you want to do, or think you were going to do when you finished high school? How did that work out for you?

My family relocated to Grand Rapids in 1963. It was very difficult for me to leave behind so many friends who had been my classmates since second grade.

When I finished high school in Grand Rapids, I planned to attend college and be certified as an English teacher, which is what I did. There were no jobs for English teachers in 1970, though, so I joined VISTA And was sent to Utah, where I spent 1.5 years. Next, I taught math at a Job Corps Center in Kentucky, then went to grad school in Nashville on a fellowship. After working a couple more years in Knoxville, TN, I went to law school (tuition then was $178 a quarter) & practiced law for almost 40 years.

What did you do right after high school?

Worked for the summer as a bookkeeper in a women's clothing store in Grand Rapids to save money for college in the fall. I went to Miami University in Ohio for 2 years before transferring to the University of Michigan.

If you went on to further your education, where did you go? What was the outcome?

U of Michigan, BA in 1970
Peabody College (now part of Vanderbilt), MS in 1973
University of Tennessee College of Law, JD in 1978

High points of your life since high school?????

I met my husband John in 1976 in law school and we married in 1977. We've been together for 40 years and we had our own law firm for 12+ years before retiring at the end of 2015. Our 2 daughters, Sarah and Meg, are now in their 30s. I am grateful for my family every day.

It was an honor (and lucky) to be appointed the first woman to serve in a couple of state government positions and to be elected to Nashville's School Board.

What's on your bucket list?

Taking a vacation that lasts longer than 10 days and learning Spanish

Travel much? What's the farthest you've been from home?

I love to travel. The farthest away from home I've been is probably Istanbul, Turkey or Fairbanks, Alaska.

Famous or interesting people you've met?

Jimmy and Rosalind Carter, George W. Bush, lots of state and federal judges you've never heard about. Nashville (where I have lived for almost 40 years) is full of talented singers, song writers, and other creative folks. I've seen Nicole Kidman walking in the park, Keith Urban in a coffee shop, and Johnny Cash at Grandparents' Day at our children's school.

What is your highest level of technological expertise?

I have more technical skills than these questions cover.

Assuming you are a retiree (or at least slowed down), what do you do with your "extra time"?

Volunteer in my community
Travel
WHATEVER I want to!

In what sports or activities do you participate now?

Walking in Nashville parks with friends, gardening, reading (if reading counts as an activity), and planning local outings and fun times with my husband and friends. Just returned from a 5-day whitewater rafting adventure on the Green River in Utah and Colorado. I will miss the reunion because I'll be on a walking tour in Ireland with my husband.

When/why was the last time you really belly laughed?

With my 3 coffee group friends - we've been getting together regularly for over 25 years.

What would we be surprised to know about you?

I have fond memories of many of you from Hemmeter Elementary, McBrite Middle and Chippewa Middle School.

At this time, do you think you'll be coming to the reunion??? (We sure hope so!!!!!)

No

I was in Tim Bailey's 6th grade class at McBrite School. Our 6th  grade teacher, I think her name was Miss Brennan, had a problem. She was incredibly narcissistic and she had it in for Tim Bailey all year long. This was back when corporal punishment in schools was legal - and she sent Tim to the Principal so frequently -- it was not fair. I felt helpless to stop her from picking on him. Does anyone else recall this?  Tim, if you were still with us, I'd call the police and tell them to arrest Miss Brennan for child abuse.

In memoriam: Linda H. Peterson, noted scholar and writing mentor

Linda H. Peterson

Linda H. Peterson, the Niel Gray Jr. Professor of English, died on June 25, after a long battle with cancer. She was 66 years old.

A member of the Yale faculty for 38 years, Peterson was a scholar of Victorian prose and an authority on life-writing — women's writing in particular. Her books include “Victorian Autobiography” (1986), “Traditions of Victorian Women’s Autobiography” (1999) and “Becoming a Woman of Letters” (2009). Despite her illness, she recently completed her work as editor of the “Cambridge Companion to Victorian Women’s Writing.”

A former chair of the English department, Peterson was a mentor to many young faculty and played a key role in strengthening the Ph.D. program. With her husband, Fred Strebeigh, senior lecturer in the English department and at the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, Peterson guided the development of the curriculum in creative writing and journalism. She was co-director of the Bass Writing Program in Yale College 1979–1989 and 1990–2004. She taught “Daily Themes,” “English 120,” and “Nature Writing.”

Her interest in non-fiction led to her work as general editor of “The Norton Reader,” a staple text for instructors of writing in the United States and beyond. She oversaw five editions of “The Norton Reader,” from 1996 through the current edition

“Linda's untimely passing is a great loss,” wrote Langdon Hammer, professor and chair of the English department, in an email announcing her death. “She has been a leader in the Yale English department for almost 40 years, including seven years as department chair. Her good sense and profound civility have deeply shaped who we are and how we do things as a department faculty, always for the better. Beyond the English department, there are few professors in any department who have served Yale in as many capacities over as long a period.”

Peterson earned a B.A. in literature at Wheaton College, a M.A. in English at the University of Rhode Island, and a Ph.D. in English at Brown University. She joined the Yale faculty in 1977 and rose through the ranks, becoming the Niel Gray Jr. Professor in 2002. She served on several department and university committees, and continued to do so through this last year.

She received Morse and Mellon fellowships from Yale, and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities. She is a life fellow of Clare Hall at Cambridge University. Quinnipiac University awarded her an honorary degree in 2004. A past president of the National Council of Writing Program Administrators, she was also a member of the Modern Language Association and the National Council of Teachers of English.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her mother, Martha Haenlein Boese; and her three younger sisters, Deborah Haenlein Kile, Carla Haenlein Piazza, and Kristy Haenlein Taylor.

At her request, there will be no funeral. Colleagues are creating a fund in her honor to support travel by graduate students to conduct research and attend conferences. A memorial celebrating the publication of the “Cambridge Companion to Victorian Women's Writing” will take place near the book's publication in late 2015.
