Melinda moved to Morningside in maybe the 4th grade? She lived half a block away from the school, in a wonderful sprawling house set back from the road behind a small fruit orchard. It was always magical to play with her at her house because it was so "countrified" on a main street (12th).

Melinda was shy and i can still see her freckles and bashful grin. She was people-smart, and seemed to know a LOT about human behavior. We use to do sleepovers, and what i remember most is giggling with her and wanting her to not blush.

Several years ago i heard she was gone, and i don't know the story. My sense at the time, and remains so, is that a wonderful wonderful woman has left our midst.

Melinda passed away on Sept. 15, 1988 (per the social security death index). The last time I saw her was at the Fred Meyers store in South Salem. She spotted me and asked me for a ride to her home. I dropped her off and that was the last time I saw her. That was sometime around 1975. Sorry I didn't keep better track of her.

I first knew Melinda in the early grade school years at McKinley, then became reacquainted at South High. Our senior year she'd come by and give me a ride to school in that funny car with push button gears! I lost track of her after high school, but have wondered about her many times when in Salem to visit, and going by her house on 12th St. near Morningside. So sorry to hear of her passing. I'll always remember her sweet smile and giggle.
