Owned three homes (new construction ranch home in Layton, UT), 1940's house in 9th & 9th area of SLC (loved that neighborhood!), 1860's Victorian in Millheim, PA (lovely house and 1/4 acre yard, but a bear to heat and keep up). I'm not bringing up the houses to brag, just to indicate the different types of houses I have lived in since leaving my childhood home and to contrast the home we will be buying very soon...

Moving to a 240 square foot dry cabin (12 x 20, no loft) on 3 acres in Goldstream Valley of Fairbanks, AK mid-August. Yes, that's right it's 1/10th the size of the Victorian House and we will have 2 adults, 1 child, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 1 rabbit in there with no running water or plumbing! However, it has an 8 x 12 screened in front porch and an 8 x 16 unheated shed and the ubiquitous Alaskan outhouse. Permafrost soil, but lovely views of Ester Dome and Ballaine hills year-round and possibly Murphy Dome in winter. Pond for ice skating, hockey, and possibly curling! Lots of trails for skiing, skijoring (if I can train Rosie), and snowshoeing. Moose, fox, lynx, rabbits, beaver are in the area. Surprisingly very few wolves or bears in Fairbanks - more likely to be hurt or killed by a moose. Of course we have electricity, heat, and high speed wireless for the computer and phones, and electric outlets to plug in the cars over the winter, so we will be civilized. I suppose we could spring for cable or satellite tv, but won't. We did the dry cabin thing during the summer 2005 with 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 dogs, 1 rabbit, and 1 hamster, but that dry cabin was 16 x 20 with a loft, so almost twice as big as this one!

Why????? No more rent, no mortgage after next year, and low heating/electric bills! If we survive this, future plans include building a house for us and using the dry cabin as a guest house/sauna cabana, then you will be welcome to come stay with us on your next visit to Alaska! We may even add water and a compost toilet for you.

We'll be visiting SLC around Christmas-time 2011 so Jamie and her cousin, Alexandra, can be baptized the same day.

Email me at rurhist@gmail.com if you are in the Fairbanks or Denali National Park area of Alaska.

Minus 42 degrees February 2008. Lowest temp since we've lived in Fairbanks was minus 52. Not too bad, at least compared to the 1930s when temps got to minus 70!

Golden Heart Plaza Fairbanks, Summer 2005. Fairbanks is close to the same longitude as Tahiti and latitude as Iceland, so we're pretty far from everything!
