Clark Leon DeWaal 1952 - 2006 – Nature Lover 

On Thursday, August 10th, Clark Leon DeWaal suffered a fatal heart attack while on a business trip in Taiwan. He was born on July 5th, 1952 to Jacob and Barbara DeWaal. Clark loved life and he loved people. Everyone who worked with him was touched by his infectious enthusiasm and sense of humor. He graduated from Olympus High School in 1970. 

Following an LDS mission in Taiwan, where he became fluent in Chinese, he earned a BA in History at the University of Utah. He spent one year at National Taiwan University and proceeded to earn his MBA at the University of Michigan. He then spent 25 years working and living in Asia with his wife and children, dragging them along to such places as Hong Kong, China, Korea, and Taiwan. His employers included Continental Illinois Bank, Motorola, ING Bank, and Deutsche Bank. Many of his colleagues were impressed by his personal and friendly nature, as well as the honest principles he adhered to. 

Upon retirement from Deutsche Bank in Hong Kong in 2003, he and his wife moved to Sandy, Utah, and he took up a teaching position at BYU's Marriott School of Business, where he taught international business classes. Many students enjoyed Clark's teaching style and the many stories he had from doing business overseas. He also worked for the Taiwan Greater China Fund as a Senior Analyst and was on company business at the time of death. It is somewhat fitting that he was not only working up until his passing, but that he died in Asia, a place dear to his heart. 

He had a positive impact on many members of the LDS Church, serving faithfully as a Branch President, Bishopric member, Sunday School teacher, Ward Mission Leader, and Scoutmaster. Clark influenced the lives of many Boy Scouts throughout the world. From age 13, he worked at scout camps in Utah for six winters and seven summers, teaching boys about camping and nature. Besides camp staff, Clark served over 18 years as an Adult Leader in Cub and Boy Scouts, and was either a Scoutmaster or Cubmaster in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Chicago, China, and Utah. Clark had an unmatched enthusiasm for working with Boy Scouts. Just weeks prior to his death, he was again up at scout camp as a Scoutmaster. 

He loved to travel. It is impossible to do any justice to all the travel that he did, but the crazy family trips to places like Philippines and Borneo were the most memorable. Most importantly, Clark was a dedicated family man, who loved his wife and children and spent lots of time teaching and playing with them. He is survived by his eternal companion, Lorraine, his children, Candace (daughter), Tyler (son), Amy (daughter-in-law), and Josh (son), and two granddaughters, Megan and Mia. He is survived by his father, mother, and siblings (Claudia, Alice, Mike, Matt, Andy, Ilauna, and Adam). He was reunited with his older brother, Howard. 

 In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the LDS Church's Perpetual Education Fund. Funeral Services will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, August 19th at the LDS Chapel on 9575 S. 3100 E., Sandy, UT 84092. There will be a viewing prior to the funeral, starting at 10:30 a.m. There will also be a viewing on Friday, August 18th at 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Cottonwood Funeral Home (4670 Highland Dr., Holladay).
