Bill Deeds

Bill (William) Deeds

APRIL 14, 1949 – MAY 6, 2024

Our beloved Poppy, William (Bill) Floyd Deeds, age 75, of Cottonwood Heights, Utah walked out of the “clubhouse” and teed off on the first of many golf courses shortly after Midnight, Monday, May 6th, 2024.  He was surrounded by family in one final expression of love as his father, Floyd William Deeds took him by his hand to head home and see his mother Mildred, and his loving Heavenly Father. A devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor, Bill was an exemplary man in every way. He was the standard all men should aspire to be.

Born April 14, 1949, in Ogden, UT to Floyd William and Mildred Deeds. Bill and his younger brother Bob completed Floyd and Mildred’s family.

Bill attended Skyline High School where he met his eternal sweetheart, Colleen Monson, whom he would later marry on June 15, 1972. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they would have 4 beautiful children and life as they knew it would then forever revolve around their children.  Bill was a family man through and through. To Bill it was family first, last, and always and there was simply no exception to the rule.  Bill went on to further his academic endeavors at the University of Utah where he would later graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He was a Utah man indeed. He would share his love of all things Utah sports related regarding the success and failures of the football and basketball program on a weekly basis with his “cronies” as he so lovingly referred to them over their respective lunches.

Bill spent summers growing up in Vernonia, Oregon working on the family farm where he learned the meaning of hard work. At around age 14, Bill started working with his dad in the two businesses that his father started, Associated Sheet Metal and Metco, Inc. for 30 years. He learned about business, the value of integrity, craftsmanship, and a love of engineering while working alongside his dad. He was also able to watch his dad create deep and meaningful relationships with those he worked with, both on a local and national level. Bill served the industry he worked in on multiple levels, acting as President of SMACNA Utah for multiple terms, while also serving terms as a board of director for the association, and acting as Chairman of the Labor negotiating committee for SMACNA Utah representing all SMACNA Utah contractors for the better part of 35 years.  After his father’s passing, Bill then spent the next 28 years working alongside his son B.J. and eventually his youngest son Chase in the family business. This allowed Bill to work hand in hand with both of his sons for the past 8 years. Bill continued to work full-time in the businesses up until his passing on May 6th. Bill was always proud to see the businesses his father started remain in the family, and they are now third-generation family-owned and operated companies today.

Bill was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the elders quorum presidency, the scouting program, coaching the deacons and priests, and could oftentimes be found teaching in Sunday school. He lived each day leading by example and loving all those around him beyond measure. If you knew Bill, you knew you were loved, valued, and respected. Bill served with his loving wife Colleen when they were called to a service mission at the Utah Food Bank for two years, which they both treasured.

Bill loved golf and was extremely good at it. In his prime, he was a scratch golfer. His time spent on the golf course changed however with the birth of his first grandchild Mia, at which point he became known as “Poppy” instead of “Bill.” Each one of his eleven grandchildren had a way with him that could make Poppy forgo any activity, including a round of golf or a Utah football or basketball game if it meant spending time with any one of them.

As Poppy’s grandchildren grew, he was at every dance recital, cheer competition, school play, or on the sideline of every sporting event. (usually followed by Poppy treating everyone to dinner afterward). Poppy often knew every one of the players on the team and had them always thinking that Poppy was their Poppy too. He loved cheering for the kids and yelling at the “flogging” refs.

His family will always remember him for his love, but also for some of his famous phrases. There will never be another way to say them quite like Bill did, but mind-boggling, holy hawkeye, geez almighty, criminey, dingleberry, and blithering idiot will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

It would be remiss if Bill’s family didn’t extend a most heartfelt and genuine thanks to his team of healthcare providers over the past seven years. Thank you to his nurses, CNAs, rehab and physical therapists, and a special thanks to Dr. Anna Chalmers and Dr. Doug Sborav, of the Huntsman Cancer Institute. They proved to be instrumental, and in some ways, miracle workers, in giving Bill seven more years of quality life that he probably shouldn’t have had based on his cancer diagnosis.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Colleen Deeds, his brother Bob (Marge), his children Brittany (Ryan Nord), B.J. (Wendy), Jocelyn (Mac Pearson), and Chase, along with his eleven grandchildren Mia, Isabelle, William, Kate, Kyler, Lyla, Beau, Savannah, Lincoln, Henry, and Cosette. He was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Mildred.  William/Bill/Dad/Poppy, until we meet again, we love you to the moon and back!! ❤️❤️
