Funeral services for Richard G. Jones, 19, 2711 E. 4135 South, who died in a Salt Lake hospital July 6 of injuries suffered in an automobile accident July 5, will be Thursday noon, Holladay Seventeenth LDS Ward Chapel, 4100 Camille Dr. Friends call 260 E. South Temple Wednesday 6-8 pm, chapel Thursday one hour prior to services. Burial Mt. View Memorial Estates. Born Sept. 7, 1949 Salt Lake City, to Ray G. and Helen Gilbert Jones. Attended LDS Business College, University of Utah. Member LDS Church. Salt Lake Chapter, Hammond Organ Society, American Theater Organ Enthusiasts Society. Survivors: parents, brothers and sisters, Ronald G., Mrs. Brigham R. (Mary Anne) Young; Susan Lee; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James W. Gilbert, all Salt Lake City.

Driver, 19, Dies Of Injuries After Intersection Crash

 

              Richard G. Jones, 19, 2711 E. 4135 South, died Sunday at 9 p.m. in a Salt Lake hospital of severe head injuries and lacerations suffered in a four-vehicle accident Saturday.

            He was a son of Ray G. Jones, Deseret News staff photographer, and Mary Helen Gilbert Jones.

The accident occurred Saturday at 1:30 pm at 17th South and 4th East when a van delivery truck, driven by Jones, and another van, driven by Terry Ward Hermanson, 17, 1882 Lake St., collided at the intersection.

Officer Dallas Adams said the Hermanson van spun around and rammed into two east-bound cars driven by Mrs. Hermilla S. Alba, 47, 1792-11th East, and Axel B. Olsen, 81, 1051 Fuller Ave. They were not injured.

A passenger in the van, Kenneth Earl Meads, 56 Grove Ave. suffered a percussion, lacerations and abrasions. He was listed in serious condition today at LDS Hospital.

Damage to the four vehicles was estimated at $5,000.

The Hermanson youth was treated for minor lacerations and abrasions and released to the care of a private physician.

The death raised Utah’s traffic toll to 144 for the year compared with 117 at this time last year.

Richard G. Jones was born Sept. 7, 1949, in Salt Lake City, a son of Ray G. and Mary Helen Gilbert Jones. He attended LDS Business College and the University of Utah after graduation from Skyline High School. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol at Skyline and a priest in Holladay 17th Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

An accomplished organist, he was a member of the Salt Lake Chapter of the Hammond Organ Society and the American Theater Organ Enthusiasts Society.

He and Meads had recently gone to California to accept employment and had returned with the delivery van to move the Meads family to the coast.

He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Brigham R. (Mary Anne) Young; Susan Lee; a brother, Ronald G., and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James W. Gilbert, all of Salt Lake City.

Funeral services will be held Thursday noon in the Holladay 17th Ward chapel, 4100 Camille Dr. Friends may call at 260 E. South Temple 6 to 8 p.m., and Thursday at the ward chapel one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Mt. View Memorial Estates.
