AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY FOR GARY SHEPHERD

After graduating from South High in 1962, I attended one year of classes at the University of Utah, then underwent 6 months basic military training in Fort Ord, CA and Fort Sill, OK as a member of the Utah National Guard.  Subsequently I served a two year mission in central Mexico for the LDS Church.  After completion of my mission, I returned to the U of U to complete a bachelor's degree in sociology.  I met and married my wife, Lauren Snow (a Bountiful High School graduate), who was majoring at the U in secondary education math and chemistry.  After we both graduated from the U, we were accepted into graduate programs at Michigan State University, where Lauren completed a master’s degree in child development, and I earned a Ph.D. in sociology. I was subsequently hired as a sociology professor at Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Michigan where I spent my entire career teaching and conducting research in my fields of specialization (social movements and the sociology of religion).  After the births of our two children (Bethany and Gordon), Lauren returned to the classroom and earned both a degree in physical therapy at Oakland University and a law degree at Wayne State University in Detroit.  I collaborated with brother Gordon -- who also was a sociology professor at the University of Central Arkansas--in writing and publishing a number of books and articles in sociological journals. Lauren worked as a physical therapist with special needs children while handling legal cases in family law as a side practice.  We retired from our respective jobs in 2018 and moved back to the Salt Lake area (Sandy), where we have renewed many old friendships and enjoy closer proximity to a number of family members.  Lauren now works part time as a physical therapist at Saint Mark's Hospital in Millcreek, and I continue dabbling in various writing projects with Gordon.
