Hey, Classmates!
Are you coming to our 30-year reunion?
That’s how it was put to me. Such a simple question. I had to think about it.
I’d missed the 10-year reunion. I was a graduate student at the time, living on bike power and ramen noodles in Alabama. I could barely afford the rent, so a trip to California was out of the question.
When the 20-year event rolled around, I had every excuse in the book at my disposal. It’s too far to travel. It’s too expensive. I can’t get off from my (self-employed) job. Blah blah lame blah.
Thankfully, I had some encouragement this year. A few of you reached across the 30-year divide and collectively talked me into attending. Since committing to make the trip, I’ve had the opportunity to make contact and start to get reacquainted with another handful of old friends. I’m feeling very excited about the chance to see some of the most important people from the first half of my life.
And I can’t think of a better reason than that for coming. High school was an extremely important time in all of our lives, the four years that bridged grade school and adulthood. We’ve all gone on to become wiser/experienced/complex/accomplished people with families/careers/children/travels. Even though it may not be apparent on a daily basis, our time at Uni has had an influence on everything we’ve done since. Just try to deny it.
Even though many of our classmates have migrated to the corners of the continent, some have decided to travel from as far away as Virginia, Florida, Illinois and spots in-between for this once-in-a-lifetime gathering. They must know something.
And, if you still live in Southern California and haven’t yet decided to attend, just remember - you’ve got it made, as we’ll all be gathering just a (relatively) quick ride down the freeway from where you are. I’ll take the liberty of speaking for all who have already RSVP’d and say that we can hardly wait to see you.
Please think about it.
Fred
