Marin Independent Journal (San Rafael, CA) January 31, 2024
Carol Ann "Carrie" Cuneo passed away at age 71 on January 3, 2024 surrounded by her dearest friends and family. She fought a heroic battle against cancer but succumbed one year after her diagnosis.
Carrie was born in San Francisco on April 14, 1952 and her family moved to San Rafael, CA in 1959 when they opened the Ann Curtis School of Swimming. She was both a competitive swimmer and synchronized swimmer. As a teenager she worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor. Carrie graduated from Terra Linda High School in 1970, with academic honors, where she competed on the diving team and played the viola with the high school orchestra.Carrie attended UC Berkeley for a short while but her passion was downhill skiing. She became a certified ski instructor and taught at Ski Incline (now Diamond Peak) for several seasons and later at Northstar and Alpine Meadows ski resorts.
Carrie also had numerous opportunities to travel when she was a young adult; first driving coast to coast visiting US national parks then throughout Mexico and Central America. In 1974 she embarked on a multi-year journey, touring Europe and Asia. She was extremely adventurous. Her exploits included a four-month stay in Chamonix, France to ski the Alps, working as a summer nanny for a family in Istanbul, Turkey and finally, managing overland tours and driving passenger buses from Amsterdam to Athens then on to Kathmandu, Nepal.
After her return to California, Carrie resumed her studies and graduated from California State University, Fresno in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy and became a licensed physical therapist. She worked in various hospitals and clinics in Fresno, San Francisco and Marin County. In the mid-1990's she went back to work at Ann Curtis Swim Club as a co-manager with her mother Ann Cuneo and became the manager in 2007.
Carrie retired from the swim club in 2019 when the Cuneo family sold the facility. Most importantly, Carrie became an avid bird watcher, gardener and a devoted member of her congregation. She loved the outdoors; hiking, biking and, of course, stopping for every bird she spotted, binoculars at the ready.Carrie is survived by her sister Susan Cuneo Starr of Lafayette, CA, brothers David Cuneo of Corte Madera and Brian Cuneo of Truckee, nine nieces and nephews and five great-nieces and nephews. A celebration of life for Carrie will be held at the Acqua Hotel in Mill Valley at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 25, 2024.
