Billy Bayer was my friend from the day I started eight grade classes after moving to Santa Clara.  Relocating for an adolescent is very difficult.  It is especially difficult to move from a busy industrial environment to a small, semi agricultural, All-American town.  Billy and a few others made the transition acceptable at a time when nothing seemed acceptable.

Billy and his family made me feel like I was a member of the family.  Except for sleep time, I was probably at the Bayer residence more than I was home.  Upon graduating from San Jose State I became Billy's roommate until I had to relocate closer to work in San Francisco.  He was probably the best friend I ever had.  Even though I haven't seen him for many years, learning of his passing feels like I lost a brother.

P. S.  I recently learned from one of Billy's brothers (Jesse, class of '59) that Billy passed away on April 28, 2013 from cancer.

When a person has atrue friend not even time can put a bearier between.  When friends have been separeted for the longest time, when they've gotton together, its as though they were never separated.
