Jenny Ebert (1976)

Not long after I returned from Brasil for college I wrote this for a writing class. Hope you enjoy it.

New Year's Eve in Rio

Last night I heard singing in the Catholic churches
on the beach after midnight they chanted
within the light of a thousnad candles.

Today I go into the Tijuca forest,
enter the temple of trees, stop by a pool
and light a candle in the slow water.

After dark thousands are setting candles
in the sand. I watch the tides rise.
It turns millions of lights to thousands,
then the last one blink and die.

At noon flocks of children races
through the sand with kites.
My knees in the water I see candle stubs
brushing againt the sand. Away from shore
water beads on my skin. With the sun
in each one, I see myself, a jewel.

There will be guitars, lyrics pages and lot and lots of music during our dinner at the Gol Restaurant. We will build our own playlist, based on your suggestions, and play it through the restaurant P.A. system. Pick songs that you loved to sing ‘back in the day’. Please post your song lists as posts in this Message Forum so others can be inspired too. Thanks to Kathy Chance for posting the lyrics to two songs from the class of '72 graduation above. More songs, anyone?

If I were to create a soundtrack to our early years at Graded, I'd start here:

Mah Na' Mah Na' (played every morning at assembly)
Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini
Li'l Red Riding Hood
Wild Thing
Rhythm of the Rain
Green Leaves of Summer (Brothers Four)
Dominique (nique nique)
Datemi un Martello (with Rita Pavone)

And, of course, these Brazilian classics:

Quero Que Vá Tudo Pro Inferno
Meu Calhambeque
Cada Macaco No Seu Galho (Cho Chuá)
A Banda
O Realejo
Disparada
Domingo no Parque
Pare o Casamento (Wanderlea)
Acorda Maria Bonita
A Taça do Mundo é Nossa
Pra Frente Brasil

I used to have a copy of the record we made of Oliver. What I'd love to see is the film. My mom made me go to ballet class the day it was shown and I never saw it!

I still have to do California and my mom's ashes; Sophie's graduating from high school in June, then going to Cuba, then in July going to Vegas.  So in the next few weeks as I continue to catch up, will be closer to knowing what the future holds. Love to all, Cathy aka Cathleen Chance Vecchiato

Michele A Hubby (Moura) (1974)

Sharon & Jimmy, I am still hoping to be able to come to the reunion, though Ii won't be able to be as involved as I had hoped.  You may have seen Facebook posts about my husband, Rubinho, who has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, as well as cardiomyopathy. We are starting treatments today with radiation 5 days a week and chemo once a week.  Some of the musicians from school may remember him. He is a drummer, and was the drummer of 2 bands in Santos that played all around. The first band was Teenagers, and the 2nd band was Pop Six.  We (our daughter Harmony) have also started a GoFundMe page. Rubinho was supposed to be doing the Austin Carnaval gig which is in 2 weeks (2/27) and the event sponsor, Mike, has asked us if he can post our link and photos on the Carnaval webage. Rubinho is well known by many musicians around the US and Brasil. We appreciate everyones prayers and positive vibes!

Michelle, I am so sorry to hear your news.  I did not know how serious the situation was.  I am keeping you and your family in my prayers.  If there is anything that I or your classmates can do, please let us know.  Keep us posted.  I will be making a contribution on the Go Fund Me page.

Hi Sharon,  Yes - this was all very sudden, actually.  We did not know how sick he really was until I "put my foot down" and we went to the emergency room on Jan 26th. That was when we found out about the cancer, and then the next day in the hospital we found out about his heart problem.  I really hope thyat we can make it, but have no idea at this moment. The next 2 months will be filled with radiation and chemo treatments which, with God's help, he will respond to positively.  I thank you for your prayers :-) I will keep you updated, if you like. Michele
