School Story:
Needless to say, I am beginning my school story portfolio with "comida" - food glorious food - Mr. Bobbert ... remember "Oliver Twist???" In her last update, Robin Wilson (Baker) mentioned she didn't recall the name for the "flaky, fish scale biscuits" that we used to eat on the bus on our way to Rio meets, field trips, etc... Well, here is what I wrote her: "The name of the biscuit is: Biscoito de Polvilho. They are made of tapioca flour known in Brasil as "polvilho" - it can be "doce" (sweet) or "azedo" (sour). I think the salty ones are made out of the "azedo." Another favorite is "pão de queijo" also made out of "polvilho" but now you can get the ready made flour in a pouch made by Kitano. My grandchildren have those just about every morning for breakfast and every time any member of the family comes up, they bring a load of pouches ... lol ... Pão de queijo has also become a recent traditional afternoon snack along with the "cafezinho" - especially on cold days!
Abraços a todos, Sylvinha

I REMEMBER ... On this day, 38 years ago, the Class of '71 walked the stage! It doesn't really seem like that long ago, really! I have very vivid memories of my years at Graded, and I know that, if it were not for Graded, for my mother, Mrs. Tuthill’s hard work as the Music Teacher, and my father, Sam Tuthill’s dedication and support, I would have never become the person I am today!
I REMEMBER ... walking down the auditorium aisle with Nicky Mazzetti and how nervous we were (sweaty hands and my tripping on my high heals that I seldom used to wear - lol ...)
I REMEMBER my favorite Math Teacher, Vlad, and how he used to make me work my brain until my head fell off … “prrractice makes perrrfect!”
I REMEMBER Mrs. Tymeson, our Guidance Counselor, and how she consoled me when both my grandparents passed away while I was at school!
I REMEMBER French classes with Mr. Allain – Le bontemps! … where Pat (Patsy) Eaton and I used to “fofocar” on the side! … lol …
I REMEMBER Chemistry classes with Mrs. Giusti and how I used to ask Tom (Tommy) Meyer to help me with the experiments so I wouldn’t blow up the lab! lol … I never was very scientific!
I REMEMBER Mrs. Arnstein’s Accelerated Reading Class! I don’t think I would be able to keep up with all of the essay grading for my students today if it weren’t for her!
I REMEMBER J.C. – what a role model for us athletes! … gee … he and I met at several of the S.P. Alumni Reunions in the ‘90s! “Que Deus o tenha em bom lugar!”
I REMEMBER Da. Bernadete and Cheryl Swarner (I still have the small little book of Oriental Wisdom she gave me!)
I REMEMBER Mr. Orndorff, my English teacher, and when he told me he would have to give me an A- instead of an A+ because I handed in a late term paper – and at his doorstep of all places!!! Lol …
I REMEMBER Mr. Wendling and the POD class – I knew everything about Brazilian History and not enough about American History! Well, this was the turn of the tide for me!
I REMEMBER the Nurse, Elisabeth Merkel (retired from Graded around 2000 and still living in S.P), when she told me I had to choose between basketball and the piano because the ache I had in my hands was the beginning of rheumatism!!! I didn’t have a clue what she was talking about but she scared me so much I decided to drop Basketball and keep the piano playing! I played so much no wonder Mark Lund wrote in my yearbook “…Don’t turn into a piano!...” Yes … I still play! … and haven’t turned into one yet! Lol …
I REMEMBER Jim Fletcher (vulgo “Flé Flé” ou “Filhinho”) and our great times in the school plays with Mr. Bobbert – “Oliver Twist,” “Our Town” and “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown!” … ai que saudades!
I REMEMBER my study halls with Laura Longoni and how she used to write Gianfranco every single day!
I REMEMBER Mary Stanton, her brother and sister, on our long daily bus rides from Alto da Boa Vista to Morumbi and back on the 4:00 p.m. bus!!!
