 Francis D. Hanaway SchenectadyFrancis D. Hanaway Jr., of Pinehurst Pl., passed away Monday, January 6, 2014, at Ellis Hospital. Born in Schenectady, he was the son of the late Francis and Julia Hanaway. Living on Riverside Avenue in Scotia for 30 years, moving back to Schenectady in 2003. Fran was a graduate of Linton High School, class of 1961. During the Vietnam War, Fran enlisted in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Great Lakes. Then to A School, earning a high level clearance, at Annapolis, MD. Assigned to the Pentagon in 1963 and was one of the many Yeoman to Record and Document the testimony of Naval experts at the hearings for the sinking of the USS Thresher. Transferred to Norfolk, VA and assigned to the SACIant command, again working on many high level projects. Nearing his discharge date, he received a presidential letter ordering him to extend his time. All critical ratings were frozen. Working on a number of Special Ops, when completed he was discharged 1966. Fran was a retired member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 105, having worked at the Naval Projects at West Milton as a general foremen. He worked for the Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority as maintenance superintendent 1988 to 2000. Retiring due to health problems. He enjoyed summers at the Great Sacandaga Lake, staying on the yacht Manatee. Great friends and memories. Fran enjoyed his cars, 60s, 70s, all makes and models, so many sweet rides. Someone called, a day at Saratoga, casino trip, poker game, what times. He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Schenectady and a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for 50 years, and a charter member of their prestigious Golf League. He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia Formosa and Joseph Formosa. Survivors include his wife, Diane, whom he married July 26, 1964; a daughter, Colleen M. Seeley; son-in-law, Jeffrey Seeley and beloved grandson, Mr. Mackenzie Francis Seeley of Rotterdam; brother, Thomas Hanaway of Schenectady; and numerous nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Friday morning at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Calling hours will be Thursday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Gleason Funeral Home. The members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians will meet at the funeral home Thursday evening at 7:45 p.m. to conduct a service. Burial with military honors will be at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Schenectady City Mission, 425 Hamilton St., Schenectady, NY 12305. The family wishes to thank doctors Vacca, Halbig and Goodman and staffs, for their kindness and the excellent care they provided.
