Victoria Lynn Greenwalt Schmidt
December 26, 1946 - November 9, 2024
The second of three girls, Vicki was born in Scottsbluff, NE on December 26, 1946 to John and Helen Greenwalt. She attended Lincoln Heights Grade School, Scottsbluff Junior High, and graduated from Scottsbluff High School with the Class of 1965. She married her high school sweetheart, Jack Schmidt, on August 6, 1966 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Scottsbluff.
Vicki and Jack raised two children, Kimberly Schmidt Nelsen and Brian Schmidt. She was a stay-at-home mother for ten years. She and her sisters, Joan and Rita, loved to host family dinners, holiday gatherings, and traveled many places.
Vicki’s career at Gering National Bank began in 1976, and where she retired in 2012. She loved her community being involved in the preservation of the Scottsbluff Junior High School and the Midwest Theater, and expanded that love of community after retirement as a Dome Rockers Quester and member of the Germans From Russia organization along with supporting and watching the Nebraska Women’s Volleyball team games. A guiding light for the Class of ’65; leading reunion committees for years to ensure Class Reunions would take place. She will be sorely missed as our leader, classmate, and friend.
Calvary Lutheran Church in Scottsbluff was her Church Home for 69 years teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, holding several board positions, active in the Women’s Quilting Group, and a member of the Priscilla Circle Bible Study. A Celebration of Life for Vicki will be held at Calvary Lutheran at 10am on Friday, November 15, 2024, with Pastor Kathy Montira officiating. Inurnment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. A memorial in Vicki’s name has been established to Calvary Lutheran Church.
Vicki is survived by her husband Jack of Scottsbluff, NE; daughter Kimberly (Mike) Nelsen, of Ames, IA; son Brian (Brenda) Schmidt of Las Vegas, NV; Granddaughters Hannah Nelsen (Sven van Achthoven) of London, UK, and Haley Nelsen of Ames, IA; step-great-grandchildren Taylor and Christian Steele of Las Vegas, NV. She is also survived by her sisters Joan Lighty of Colorado Springs, CO, Rita (Don) Barnes of Lake Minatare and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law Bill Lighty.
The family thanks her many friends for their love and support and all the medical staff at the University of Colorado hospital, Regional West Medical Center and Brookstone Home Health and Hospice, for their exceptional care of our Wife, Mom, Grandma, Sister, Aunt, and Friend.
