Artists' Colony Burns Down--Summer Theater

An inquiry from England about the Summer Theater brought several replies from members of this list, so I thought I would update the history with an excerpt from a letter I received in May of 1962 when I was in grad school in England.  I was fortunate to have several good correspondents who kept Sea Cliff news and rumors floating across the Atlantic.  The Theatre burned in the late 50s and the adjacent 3 story wooden fire trap that used to house minor actors became a "flop house" with cheap rooms rented by the week.  I stayed there in the summer of '61 and Barbara Gilson also had a room there that summer, along with a cast of hard luck characters fit for a Flannery O'Connor novel.

From the letter:

FLASH FLASH FLASH FLASH
.
YOUR OLD HOMESTEAD HAS BURNED DOWN AGAIN. [The Artists’ Colony next to the burned out summer theater.] this time it started on the outside and worked in. Just got back, the roof went about an hour ago period.. It was a duzzy . This time. I can’t imagine they will be able to use it. There were about a dozen people living in it at the time, but only Mrs. Sorey [Momalina, the owner’s elderly mother] was around… Why doesn’t he sell off the whole hillside?
