Robert's description brings a thought--yes he was a quiet kind of fierce competitor. And the very best kind who could be fierce in competition but devoid of malice.

Thanks to Nik for the correction about Ned McAdams' wife Maryanne. I recall that at our 55th reunion in Florida, Maryanne was in fragile health and Ned was very attentive and patient in making sure she was comfortable. Although I had to leave Florida before Ned and Maryanne hosted a lunch after the reunion, several classmates attended.

Senior prom picture with Joanne LaPierre. I think Joanne still has a slight limp from crushed feet, and I am still grateful that she put up with me and accepted my very timid invitation.

Sports Night, 1957. Who else would dive headlong into the gym floor?

Bob Johnston was on call for volunteer hurricane relief service during the reunion, but we met several months later as he and his son passed through Oregon. He still towers over me and you can see he "leaned on me" but I did not give in. We met in a local diner, both wearing maroon by chance.

I first indulged in the American fantasy of 'get rich quick' at age 9 when my brother Art and I decided to breed and sell hamsters to medical facilities in lieu of guinea pigs. As with most of my entrepreneurial ambitions, I stayed with it long enough to find out what it was about, learn how to do it, then something else lured me away.

In 1954 I seized the chance to get away from home and work for an archeological field crew in South Dakota. The dig was on the Boehmer Ranch and often on weekends and after work, we swam in the Missouri, rode the ranch horses, plinked with rifles, or helped the rancher. I returned a second year but in the summers after my junior and senior years, working as a lifeguard amidst a beach full of girls made 8 hours a day of digging with an all male crew seem unattractive. Hormones have led a lot of teenagers to make bad decisions.
