Nancy Meyer ('56) passed on this 1957 clipping about the Youth Center. Feel free to add your own thoughts.

I have not found a way to insert the file as it exists on Nancy's Facebook page but here it is in converted form. I'll also try to attach the PDF version of the clipping. (Looks like the pictures didn't copy.  I have attached the original as a PDF and I hope you can open it.  Nice picures of several members of the Class of '58.

The Sea. Cliff Youth Center, in its 10th year, is "bigger and better than ever" . . . but it's only the beginning, say the teenagers who run it.

''The center—which probably holds a Long Island record for longevity — enjoys its success mostly "because it's different," in the opinion of its senior advisors, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Fraley.

"The youngsters like to run things themselves . . . and we never interfere," explains Fraley. "They handle the activities, set up disciplinary regulations and plan events. They even conduct programs to raise funds to carry on the program."

ALTHOUGH HE modestly disclaims any credit, the youngsters at the center say much of the success is due to the efforts of Fraley.

Fraley is physical education instructor and track coach at Sewanhaka High School, Floral Park, and developed Al Oerter, Olympic discus champion. The Fraleys live at 44 Cunning. ham Ave., Floral Park.

all its committees.

Mrs. Fraley, who majored in - dramatics and physical education in college, directed the center's recent 10th anniversary show.

The center at Central Avenue and 14th St., has a present enrollment of about 225 boys and girls. The two-story building has a soda fountain, juke box, various games and a meeting room.

"The village provides the heat and pays the phone bills," said Fraley, "but the youngsters furnish everything else. They raise funds through shows, cake sales, carnivals and rummage sales.

Ten years ago, John J. Burns, then mayor of Sea Cliff, prevailed upon Fraley to organize a youth center. Burns recently resigned as an assemblyman to run for Oyster Bay Town supervisor.

"We tried to run things differently," . said Fraley. "We don't, want the youth center activities to conflict with the home, church' or school, but rather to supple. ment them."

The center programs are held Friday and Saturday nights and Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
