THE CONTENT OF OUR CHARACTERS

Is it true that by 7 years old our characters are formed?  From the ancient Greeks to the Jesuit educators to modern psychology the evidence is strong that inside every kid is the adult to be.  That may be why inside every adult is the child who was.  Now, from 1950-53 comes a record of who we thought we were and who others thought we were.

Thanks to Betty Sprague's mother and Betty, I recently received a large tattered black book with the title "My Character Book."  In it are questionnaire pages which Betty and maybe sister Dori ('55) asked schoolmates to fill in.  On the back of each of these pages are "slam" comments from other people.  The book also includes a "Famous For" page and a "Prophecies" page.

I've started scanning, and I'll do some tallies about how many times X or Y turns up as "Fav Boyfriend" or "Class Orator" or "Seen but not heard" or "Funniest Student".  That will take a while.  Meanwhile, here is a sample for Loretta "Lee" or "Lerroy" Berroyer.  I sent it to her kids and son Rick remarked of his sister Krissy as a girl, "she too possessed many of the same character traits as mom; cute, funny, popular and of course short."

Wayne Furlong's Character Page

In the "My Character Book" that Betty Sprague (Harnage) sent to us, here is a page on one of her sister Dori's classmates, Wayne Furlong.  Wayne ('55) like his sister Rickie ('58) bore the burden of being the principal's kid, his father being the tall, eagle eyed principal, then district superintendent, Remington Furlong.

And below is the "slam" page where others wrote comments:
