School Story:
I left Sea Cliff for Glen Cove in 1951, having completed the 8th grade. I graduated from Glen Cove High School in '55. My sisters, Nancy and Molly graduated from North Shore High in '58 and '61.
Starting in the 4th or 5th grade, us 'wrong-side-of-town' kids would flex one of our few perquisites by taking an inaugural swim, once as early as late April. The official opening of the season was Memorial Day, and respectable families observed/enforced it resolutely.
In Junior High, Jay Siegel's mom would drive a small group of us to Glen Cove once a week for ballroom dancing lessons in the basement of a private residence. This training stood us in good stead a few years later when Rock 'n Roll came along and changed the world.
