In Memory

Curtis Friend

Curtis Leeroy Friend, age 31, passed away February 16, 2002 in Mount Vernon to be with his Lord and Savior.
He was born September 7, 1970 in Mount Vernon, the son of Gary and Donna(Youngsman) Friend.
Curtis grew up in the Big Lake and Clear Lake area. He attended Big Lake School, Cascade Middle School and in 1988 graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School. During high school he was active in FFA and worked for Grizzley Morgan Pack Trips taking many people into the Crystal Mountain area on horseback.
He became a heavy equipment operator and worked for many companies including Trico Contracting, SRV, and Mid-Mountain Contractors when he became ill. Curtis had a very strong and devoted work ethic.
Curtis' dream to be a fireman became a reality when he joined the Clear Lake Fire District #4 in 1989 at the age of 18. He was active with the fire department until his death.
Curtis has been an inspiration to all that knew him. From birth to his death he has fought to survive. His road has not been an easy one. He beat cancer three times and had a bone-marrow transplant. He had both hips replaced at age 25.
Over the last year his body was no longer able to keep up the fight for life. He loved his family dearly and was devoted to his nephew and niece. Everyone he touched in his life will miss Curtis deeply.
Curtis was a lifetime resident of Skagit County. He was confirmed at Bethany Covenant Church. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union Local #302, Clear Lake Fireman's Association and the Sedro-Woolley Eagles Club.
Memorials may be made to Clear Lake Volunteer Fire Dept., Dist. #4 or Clear Lake Covenant Church.

Curtis always had the biggest smile and biggest laugh! He was loved by all who knew him and went "home" far too soon! God bless to his close friends and family members.....

REMEMBER ME:

To the living, I am gone,
To the sorrowful, I will never return,
To the angry, I was cheated,
But to the happy, I am at peace,
And to the faithful, I have never left.

I cannot speak, but I can listen.
I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.
So as you stand upon a shore gazing at a beautiful sea-
As you look upon a flower and admire its simplicity-
Remember me.

Remember me in your heart:
Your thoughts, and your memories,
Of the times we loved,
The times we cried,
The times we fought,
The times we laughed.
For if you always think of me, I will never have gone.

I don't remember alot of people from school . . . . but I DO remember Curtis. I remember it always surprised me what a decent guy he was to me despite how few of his friends were, that took courage and integrity. Today I am sad, peace be with his family.

I, too, don't remember a lot of people from high school, but I remember Curtis.  He was a nice guy and always had that goofy smile like he was always up to something.  Sorry to hear he passed.
