Joshua Boerger

Marian College Undergraduate Succumbs to Heart Ailment

By Kevin McCoy and Sean Massey (Marian College)

On Dec. 12, the Nu Septaton Chapter at Marian College suffered a great loss as fellow brother and friend Josh Boerger passed away from Marfan's Syndrome at the age of 22. Services were held on Dec. 17 in the Dorcas Chapel on the Marian College campus. Boerger, who was initiated into Phi Sigma Kappa in the fall of 1999, was originally from Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin. A junior sports and recreation management major, with a minor in coaching, Boerger was a very active brother in the chapter, co-chairing the Membership Recruitment Committee for two years, as well as staying involved in many activities. Outside of the chapter, he was heavily involved in campus intramural sports, was a sports writer for the Marian College newspaper and was actively involved in the Business Club. He was also an employee of the Campus Life Office. Boerger suffered many educational setbacks due to his health, but still managed to be an average student. After the first semester of his freshman year, he underwent his first operation. He never let this bring him down, and it only made him follow his personal motto: "Never give up." A year later he underwent his second operation, a 26-hour battle he was unable to survive. Boerger was the type of person anyone could turn to for help. He was always actively involved in fraternity business, doing everything he could to help out with community service, fund-raising and many other chapter functions. He was well known and liked by many on campus. He proudly wore his letters everyday; he stood for everything that Phi Sigma Kappa is all about. Not only have the brothers of Nu Septaton lost a quality man, but all of Phi Sigma Kappa has lost a great brother.
