Career Highlights

I have been a peace and environmental activist since the 1960's, and completed designing an "Environmental and Sustainability Studies" program for North Central Michigan College in Petoskey in 2016, where I now teach as an adjunct professor. After graduating from South High I attended Lake Forest College, then Northern Illinois U (NIU.) I was arrested for defending old growth trees on campus at NIU in 1971, was involved in supporting AIM Lakota Activists at Wounded Knee in 1973. I dropped out of college for several years engaging in anti-war, anti-nuclear activism, finally returning and completing an MS in Environmental Studies from the U of Montana, Missoula in 1986. Since that time I have worked as an educator for all age groups, from the Headstart Program on a reservation in Montana to College students in northern Michigan. I built a home and retreat center in 2005 called "Tara's Meadow" on Beaver Island, where I host "guest sojourners" and teach outdoor experiential classes in the summers. I love my work and will never retire.

Spending my time now

I am currently teaching Environmental Studies as an adjunct professor at North Central MI College in Petoskey, MI. I love teaching and love my students, so am likely to expire before I ever retire! I am also the director for "Tara's Meadow Education & Retreat Center" nonprofit on beautiful Beaver Island in Lake
Michigan. During the summers I host folks on site at our 30 acre Nature Sanctuary, and we sponsor both an annual Sustainability Fair around the Solstice June 21, and also a Labor Day Weekend Retreat out on the Island. I'm most proud of our "Youth Mentorship & Environmental Stewardship" (YMES) program ~ supporting youth through the hard times we are living with today. Anyone interested please contact me either through my Face Book Page: "Seamus Norgaard" or our website: www.tarasmeadow.org

One thing I learned about life in the last 50 years.

My ethic: Act in the service of life, without attachment to the outcomes.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING MICHAEL! I miss our old crew of nerds Mike, and have included some memories of us below. Please give me some reminders if you write back. I hung out with a group of "nerd" outcasts and was labelled "The Fox" at Sheboygan South High back in the class of 1967. While "Jim" was my nickname back then I now go by "Seamus" -- the Irish for my legal name "James." I am now an adjunct professor in Environmental Studies at North Central MI College in Petoskey, MI, and am director of a nonprofit organization, www.tarasmeadow.org, that does environmental work and hosts guests and retreats out to our 30 acre Nature Sanctuary on Beaver Island, in Lake Michigan. I miss Genic Okalawisc, and you Mike Cycana!, also Ron Kenyon, Greg Hoerz, and Jeffrey Meissner to name a few I remember. Mike Sweeney was also a friend. I have lost touch with my crew of fellow nerds tho ~ Jeffrey M has passed away, Ron Kenyon was homeless but seemed content in Seattle in 2012, and Mike Cycana is maybe in New Zealand? And Greg Hoerz apparently is secluded, not much for contact. We all hung out together, listened to Bob Dylan, played chess, secretly made LSD in the high school lab. I did not date much back then -- but I did go to the prom with Pam (blond, don't recall her last name) and would enjoy renewing contact with her. In fact I will enjoy contact with anyone who remembers and wishes to reach out. My Face Book page is: "Seamus Norgaard." Thanks Mike! Good Health & Happy Holidays to You!

Hi Greg. It's great to see an update from you. Neat to hear you are a sociologist! I did send you a reach out regarding our times together playing chess, making LSD, listening to Dylan. Have you heard anything from Mike Cycana? Ron Kenyon? Jeffry Meissner? I'm now a professor in Environmental Studies, and have a retreat center on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan where people come for fun, adventure, personal growth, etc. Here's a couple of websites that will share what I'm up to: www.tarasmeadow.com, also www.lifethresholds.com Hope to hear from you old friend :)

Hey Mike Sweeney, Seamus here (I was called "Jim") Norgaard. I traced my Irish roots on my mom's side and ended up teaching classes on Celtic culture, and built my home on Michigan's Irish-settled "Emerald Isle", Beaver Island. I also found the Irish of my name "James" is "Seamus" - so I go by Seamus now. Looking forward to the reunion and seeing you there.
