Yeah, I was there. We never found out who was shooting at us but it was probably Old Man Shackelford. I don't know why he'd be upset. All we were doing was wading in the pond and sitting under that shade tree. I imagine Jason got in trouble when he got home. His parents had just split up. I think things were tight for them then. Didn't Jerry live behind Jason then? He was probably along also.

Speaking of swimming, how many of you ever sneaked into the swimming pool at the country club late at night for a late night swim. I have to admit to a few times myself. Just had to jump in because there was waayyy too much testosterone on this forum.

The fairer sex is always welcome. And yes I too have snuck into the CC pool. Although you can't consider yourself a true member of the club unless you did it at least once skinny dipping. One time we went out there during the winter and put those deck chairs out on the pool while it was frozen. I imagine they sank to the bottom. Delinquents we were.

Swimming in ponds and sneaking into pools. A definite top 10! We need a finalized list. Anyone want to take a stab at it? You guys talking about Jason Jordan? So you never knew a Skeeter Vickie? I Knew at least 2 and a guy named "Stretch" who was a friend of Barry Benning. Laugh if you will, but one of the Skeeters I knew was a woman!

Hey don't forget Jenkin's Ferry for swimming. Anyone ever figure out why everyone pronounced Hurricane with a short a at the end? It was Hurri-can Creek to everyone I knew. Another one of those Sheridan things, I guess. But I have yet to hear anyone pronounce one of those big storms that hit the gulf coast every year a hurri-can.

Count me among those swimming at the CC after hours, but always with clothes.

Justin James (1986)

Jamie, locals call them hurrican's its something to do with the speed they say it! but the new generation of people call them hurrucane's? i my self spent many a day at hurrican creek, low water bridge, never made it up town to the CC. another only is Sheridan, can some one try and sell you an elevator pass!

Skeeter had a mechanic that worked for him named Opie.I always thought that was kinda funny. Chuck- we are talking about Jason Jordan. and Mark- I think Jerry may have been there too, he lived right behind Jason.

Jamie- I spent many a hot day swimming in Jenkins Ferry. Earlier we were talking about working for the county, well, I worked for the county one summer and we had a dump truck load of gravel and we were patching holes on gravel roads well we had been working for about 2 hours and we decided we wanted to go swimming so we dumped that load of gravel in the woods and spent the rest of the day swimming! We showed back up at quitting time and nobody ever knew!

Aaron Wilson (1988)

I'm lauging at dumping the load of gravel in the woods! Funny!

Justin mentioned swimming at "low water bridge" is that the same as "long bridge" on Hwy 35 heading toward Grapevine? That was Hurricane Crk as well. I've been out there a few times with the Gaddis boys. I guess Hurricane meandered all through Grant Co. - I wonder how many different swimming holes were on that creek?

I remember Jason's mural on the restroom building out at the fairgrounds - it was a pair of huge Nike hi-tops hanging down with a silouhetted cityscape behind them. Some punk came behind him and painted... um... obscene things all over the mural. Made me so mad.

Jody, we'd get one of those short dump trucks full of ashphalt and go out patching pot holes. We'd get in one of those moods and run a patch 200 yards. It'd be bumpity bumpity, hey... interstate whoa bumpity. We'd be done by 10 am. We were working 4 tens so we'd have 3 day weekends too. Man that was the best job I ever had. We even had one of those vans that used to belong to the senior center and it had a/c and 4 full size benches. We took turns sleeping in the a/c. And Lord forbid you ever broke a shovel or something. Then you'd have to go on trial. Ducky would be our judge and he came up with some humiliating punishments.
Yeah Aaron, it seemed to be out there forever then bang! I think Jason had a lot of talent. Maybe I'm biased cause he was a friend, but I don't think so.

I think Justin is talking about long bridge. There were a lot of low water bridges in Grant Co. They were the low lying concrete ramps that were designed for water to run over them and give a solid base. We cleaned up a lot of those during my 2 summers out at the county.

Its funny when you remember old Summer jobs. We probably didn't know how good we had it! I didn't hit many swimming holes in the Sheridan area-I used to canoe the Saline river with my youth group and that turned into a dunkfest . I remember the mural at the fairgrounds and it was cool.

Mike Brown (1986)

I remember seeing The Mural out at the fairgrounds as well. I think Jason started airbrushing shirts for everyone shortly after that. Talking about nick names, I know all of the Basketball dudes remember Hickory Nutt. Coach Baily give me my nick name. Can you remember that Chuck?

02/16/09 04:28 PM #1735

Chuck Schwartz (1985)

Of course I remember your nickname Moose. Can you guys remember all the stuff we used to call Johnny and Robbie Cathcart? (they weren't bad names, just funny!)

02/16/09 04:50 PM #1736

Mike Brown (1986)

ICE BALL? Was there another one?

02/16/09 04:52 PM #1737

Mike Brown (1986)

I remember Robbie coming into practice one day with a black eye and we asked what happend. He said he got hit in the eye with and Ice Ball. So the name began.

02/17/09 02:03 PM #1738

Chuck Schwartz (1985)

Yeah Robbie was "Iceball" (Shades of Kazanski and "Top Gun"). We used to nickname Johnny however his last name rolled out. "Golf Cart", etc...

02/17/09 02:07 PM #1739

Mike Brown (1986)

I dont remember all the other names just Ice Ball. Do you remember Hickory Nutt?

02/17/09 02:10 PM #1740

Mark Avant (1985)

You're talking about John Cathcart, right? We called him Howdy Doody for many years. Not b-ball related, just we'd known him so long. And maybe a little obvious. Really good dude though.

02/17/09 02:19 PM #1741

Mike Brown (1986)

Yes, them Cathcarts were really good peeps.

02/17/09 02:54 PM #1742

Chuck Schwartz (1985)

Moose do you remember that horror movie we went to see that time? Hickory Nutt? I am sure it will come back to me- who was it?

02/18/09 09:55 AM #1743

Mike Brown (1986)

No, i dont remember the horror movie. Wasn't the Rocky horror picture show was it? Hint on Hickory Nutt. Always wore black dress socks with his high tops in Basketball practice.
