JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY

From Nancy Bush Shirley -

When I thought Jefferson Elementary School was going to close its doors, I was very sad.  I had taken a private tour in 2011 with Ron Robbins, a teacher at the time, and I took pictures.  It was very different in many ways but the same in some.  Since then, Sherman ISD has changed plans and the programs from Perrin Elementary School will be moved to Jefferson School sometime this summer.  Next school year, Jefferson will house Early Childhood Development and something else I cannot remember lol.

At our class reunion, several people inquired about going through it one last time before being sold, so I decided to look into what was going on, if anything.

There is supposed to be a 125th Anniversary Celebration on Tuesday, May 18 at 6 pm that is open to the public.  I have been in contact with Kimberly Simpson, Director of Communications at Sherman regarding this celebration.  They have not firmed up the plans yet but she assured me she would let me know. So when I know more about that, I will update you all. She did however state that it most likely will be held outside so everyone can social distance.

Meantime, wonderful Steve Gentry, class of 1969, has made all the necessary arrangements and paperwork for a private tour of Jefferson on Saturday, May 28, from 9 am until 11 am.

Rules are no vaping, smoking and you must wear a mask.  He will take us on a private tour of Jefferson. There is an elevator in the cafeteria if needed.

Here are a few highlights about the school:

Jefferson was first school in Texas to offer hot lunches to the students, hence first school to have cafeteria in Texas.

Jefferson was first school in Texas to have a P.E. program due to Miss Evorie Dillingham.

Jefferson might have a ghost!

If you would like to go on the private tour, please let Nancy know ASAP so we will know about how many will attend - shirleyr@gotsky.com
