Off the North Rim, near 8800 feet. It's not a bad commute to the office. Nearby is the rainbow rim trail with mountain biking right along the edge.

Glad we have all four seasons in Arizona. We do get 300+ days of sunshine, when there's something else going on, we say "we're getting weather today."

For this work trip we were monitoring inner-canyon trails and rehabilitating ecologically sensitive areas. (And I was getting my butt kicked by 12,000cfs. Can you say "rig to flip?").

Nankoweap granaries. At river mile 53. Most easily accessible from the river but a treacherous 4 day hike, starting from the North Rim, will give you access as well. The area was inhabited by the Piute from 900 to 1150AD and the name translates as "the place where many died."

Last summer I had the privilege to serve as a team translator for a medical team working in an orphanage where the children lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. Here's some of those beautiful children. In fact, there are 1.3 million orphans in Tanzania due to the AIDS epidemic. Pretty staggering considering that Tanzania has about the same population as the state of California. Still, the people there are amazingly kind and hope resides, as seen in their faces.
