Comments:

I spent my undergrad years as a pre-med at Stanford, got to my senior year and decided that medicine was not my path, so I took what turned out to be a 20 year leave of absence, during which time I worked as a carpenter and put in a 16 year stint working in the trade show world, and running an exhibit studio in corporate America. During this time I did an enormous amount of windsurfing and sailing (including one of my all-time great adventures, a 2-person, 28 day trip from Hawaii to the mainland), I got a pilot's license, I married Lesley and we started our family. In 1992 I finally went back to Stanford to finish my degree, this time in design, and opened Duckhill Design in 1996. We moved to Moss Beach (22 mi. south of San Francisco) in '93 and have been enjoying the rural coastside life enormously. Wow, made it to middle age(?!?!) In my ongoing efforts to NOT act my age whenever possible, I became a Burning Man participant (www.burningman.com); didn't go this year, and I can't wait for next year. It is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but for those of us firmly grounded in hippiedom and willing to step outside of our comfort zones once in a while, it is, hands down, the most amazing human spectacle I have ever seen.

I am incredibly fortunate to have such an amazing family. Life at the Duckworth-Hill household is rarely slow; our home is full of books, music, art projects, and giggling children. Lesley and I just celebrated our 20th year of laughing at (with?) each other, and our kids are bright, warm, and hysterically funny little people. We spend a fair amount of outdoor time sailing on SF Bay, camping, and tromping around in the hills and on the beach near our home. Lesley is English and her family is still there, so we visit the UK every 18 months or so. Our travels have also taken us to various parts of Mexico, Hawaii, and Fiji, (where I bumped into Jo Jahns at the airport!!)

There are never enough minutes or dollars in a day, and Life is very good.

Post High School Education:

Stanford University

School Story:

I am pondering this one; I keep going back to the parties that my parents allowed us to have up there at the top of Orange Grove Avenue....of course, there were also the parties at Sharon Lucas's home. Cruising to Twohey's after basketball games in Hugh and Bob Moran's Renault Dauphin. Remember coming to school one morning to see the obscene pep banners that someone had plastered high up on the outside of the auditorium? Now THAT was funny....Driver's Ed with Mr. Solari was a hoot, and there are assorted Solari-isms that have stuck with me through the years. And who could forget the sex education lectures that took place in Jim Patterson's VW van.

My favorite "school days" hang outs or other places:

I'd hang out at Winchell's Donuts when Diane Freeman was working there.

Do you get back to South Pasadena?

Very sporadically.

What I always wanted to do that I haven’t done yet:

Visit New Zealand and Australia, sail in the Caribbean, sail in the Mediterranean, renew my pilot's license....

My "Goals in Life" or "Hopes & Dreams":

Wouldn't mind being a grandpa.

What or who influenced you most back in high school?

Mrs. Berlot instilled a true love of literature and passed on some valuable analytic tools. Mr. Solari was inspirational in so many ways. Mr. Furuda got me excited about science. Mr. LaMagra pushed me to get on stage.

What bands or songs were your favorite back then?

Sons of Champlin, Marvin Gaye, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Miles Davis, The Beatles, Earth Wind and Fire, Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Frank Zappa

Organizations or groups you belonged to in school:

Bengals, JV and varsity basketball. Loved the service aspect of the Bengals, and the teamwork and sweat of b-ball.
