Occupation/Careers (details):

Special Education teacher, lawyer, divorce mediator

Different places you have lived:

Berkeley, Paris (France), New York City (Manhattan) and North San Diego County (Carlsbad)

Family SPHS grads:

Ronald Johnson, early 1950s?

I still have family that lives in/near South Pasadena:

My mom and Ron moved to Pasadena around 1972 and left me the house in South Pas until it was sold.

Comments:

Lived in Berkeley, Paris, France, Princeton, NYC and now North San Diego County. Went to NYU Film School then grad school in Special Ed. Taught in Manhattan State Psychiatric Hospital, Jr. High in Harlem, the East Village, etc. working with severely emotionally disturbed kids. Took out an ad in the Village Voice and met my husband. We have been together since 1985, married since 1987. Moved to So Cal and went to law school just for something to do and ended up becoming a divorce attorney. Was shocked at what a racket divorce court was and quit in disgust to do nothing but mediation for the past 7 or 8 years. Have 100% track record with over 300 couples and love keeping my clients out of court.

Post High School Education:

Merritt Community College, Oakland 1973-1974
Alliance Française, Paris, France 2/76 - 6/76
Trenton State Community College (while living on campus at Princeton University) 1976-1977
New York University School of the Arts, 1977 - 1979
New York University Graduate School of Education, 1979-1981
University of San Diego School of Law 1993-1996

School Story:

Throwing at egg at VP Cohen on the last day of school and him chasing me down the street. I hear he had some kind of a break down that summer and he never came back.

You're welcome.

My favorite "school days" hang outs or other places:

Martha Gewertz's house on Monterey Road, The Edwards house on Lyndon, hiking up in Angeles Crest and above Sierra Madre, hitchhiking to Hollywood or the beach.

Do you get back to South Pasadena?

I visit Jan Wilson and Katy Crowe when they are at their folks' place at holidays.

SPHS graduates I keep in touch with:

Martha Gewertz, Katy Crowe, Rissa Mintzer, Bob Hardaway, Cathe Biles, Tina Biesek and Bill Hill.

What I always wanted to do that I haven’t done yet:

See liberty and justice for all and not just for those who can afford it.

My "Goals in Life" or "Hopes & Dreams":

To transform the way people divorce from fighting in court (litigation) to mediation so that other kids won't get stuck in the middle of their parents nasty divorce like I was. I am one of the leaders of the Peaceful Divorce movement in the US and Canada and I would like to see a big change in my own lifetime.

What or who influenced you most back in high school?

The political collective that older Tigers started in Berkeley called Red Sun Rising. When I dropped out of 12th grade I moved up there and lived with them until I graduated from Berkeley High School in 1973. Their radical politics have stayed with me all my life and most of the guys went on to become lawyers and/or law professors. I am still in touch with most of them.

What or who influences you most today?

Van Jones, Noam Chomsky, Chris Hedges. Yes I am still all about the left wing politics!

What bands or songs were your favorite back then?

Bob Dylan, The Band, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Who.

What musicians, songs or albums would be on your playlist today?

Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Sly and the Family Stone, Joni Mitchell!

Hobbies/Activities/Pastimes in High School:

Rocking the political and social boat. LSD and mushrooms, partying, hitchhiking up and down the coast having adventures.

Hobbies/Activities/Pastimes TODAY:

Dinner parties, playing cards with friends, French Bulldogs, Facebook, Pinterest, music, travel.

Organizations or groups you belonged to in school:

Naughty but smart trouble makers who smoked behind the auditorium.

Organizations or groups you belong to today"

Daughters of American Revolution, California State Bar Association

I remember when.......

I invited a few people over for a party while my parents were up at our place in Arrowhead and I had the Camino Del Cielo place to myself. I sent out written invitations and hundreds of people showed up. A band showed up. Terry Grimm came over with a paper bag full of peyote. The cops came and Rick Booth had to talk them out of shutting us down.

A time machine takes you back to 1970-1972, what would you change?

I would have taken piano lessons and studied French so I could be proficient at both today.

What's happening in my life now:

Focusing on self care which is something a lot of people have told me I don't do. I guess team Belinda doesn't qualify as self care. (Team Belinda = my hair, skin, etc. etc. people who keep me propped up) Recently a wise man told me that all these big feelings I feel are not mine, that I am an empath and suddenly everything made a lot more sense. Since that time I have cut off all the political feeds on my Facebook account and unsubscribed from all newsletters online so that I can feel my own feelings and not be outraged at what is happening in the world.

We’re you just at the reunion? Terri Gerber said you were great friends.

NO!!!!! I had no idea she was ill!!!!! She was the sweetest, most gentle soul. Why do the good die young? We were "friends" on Facebook, I was at your wedding, visited you when I found out we lived in the same town and didn't follow up. My loss!!! So sad for her girls and all those who were her actual and real friends! Knowing how Freddy Salas is, I bet you HE stayed in touch with her. We all need to be more like him in that respect. Mary McMahon's brother, Michael, is like that too! He maintains friendships over time and space unlike normal humans. Feeling like a bad friend this morning!!!! RIP sweet girl!

Everyone knew who this beautiful, vivacious girl was. We didn’t run in the same circles so I wasn’t a friend but Teri Gerber was. I was at Teri’s house a few hours ago and she was close friends with Janet. She had so many wonderful things to say about her. I wish we would have hung out when we lived in SP.  My loss.

Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, my 55th Birthday. I am so Blessed! I decided to tell you a little bit more about myself. Years ago - I was very much in love with someone; a man whom I deeply longed to marry. However, I was always a seeker of Truth, Goodness, Wisdom and the Meaning of Life. In this search - I found God. (I could write volumes). Suffice it to say, however, that I allowed my heart to be broken in two, giving up the man whom I deeply loved, in order to follow Christ.

Today, I now long for my heart to be completely “Shattered” so that I no longer live but that Christ may live in me! Words cannot express my desire to be one with God; that I may be completely transformed in Christ. If only all could see as I see. Yet even I see so dimly. . . Nonetheless, the less I see, the more I believe, and the more I believe, the more I desire . . .

When I was young, my grandmother told me, "Young girls have such beautiful skin. They look so fresh but that beauty doesn't last. You will never look like this again." When I see this photo I know what she was talking about. I stood in front of my husband this morning with this 8x10 photo facing him and said, "I don't look like this anymore. I can't put my finger on what the differences are but I know I don't look like this." He told me I look good to him. Bless him.

Same tree a year later. That freshness is already starting to fade a tiny bit. That outfit was my uniform.

I don't know how many of you will remember Mary Edwards, but I pretty much moved in with them on Lyndon Street in 9th grade. She had an older sister, Julie Edwards, I am laying on the laps of older Tigers, Robin Stadig, Daphne McKinzie and Julie Edwards. We had just gotten back from seeing my first Federico Fellini movie, Juliet of the Spirits. Someone had gotten a copy and showed it one night at our high school. Was any one else there that night?

I never graduated from SPHS. I dropped out in 12th grade. I was spending half of each month in Berkeley with my friends and it made more sense for me to go to Berkeley High School. Freddy had gone off to Blair and it just wasn't the same anymore. This is me in my apt. right after I graduated in 1973. I went to Jr. College in Oakland for one year and got almost all As. In fact I did really well at Berkeley High. SPHS was just too restrictive for me. I never went to class so I flunked out of everything.
