Nancy Lee Carlson - Class Of 1968

Nancy Lee Carlson

CARLSON, Nancy Lee
June 1, 1950 -
February 5, 2017

Nancy Lee Carlson was a woman of deep Christian faith, and her great hope was realized when her heavenly Father abruptly called her home on February 5, 2017. Born in Spokane and adopted into the Carlson family, Nancy was a Spokane girl through and through: baptized at First Presbyterian Church in her first year of life, attended the short-lived Manito Primary School, Jefferson and Sacajawea, and graduated from Ferris High School in 1968. She majored in English at WSU, and soon returned to Spokane to teach, first at Glover Jr. High, and then for 34 years at Rogers High School. She retired in 2009 after 35 years of service and advocacy for disadvantaged kids and public schools.
Nancy's life influenced many, through her years of creative teaching and coaching, her faithful service as a choir member, Deacon and Sunday School classroom grandparent at First Pres. Her early experiences as a Campfire girl led to a lifetime of support of Campfire and Camp Sweyolakan. She was generous to a fault, constantly giving gifts to those she loved, did not hesitate to speak the truth in love, and was loyal and patient. Anyone she met in Spokane would quickly find there was only 1 degree of separation between them, 2 at the most!
Nancy lived life to the fullest; she loved attending the Spokane Symphony and other concerts and plays with friends, and was at the Phantom of the Opera at the Fox Theater with a friend on her last night. A diehard Mariners fan from the beginning of the franchise, she collected baseball memorabilia, and proudly flew flags on her car for her beloved WSU Cougars as well. She spent many holidays with friends and church family.
Nancy is survived by her sister Gerri (CT), brother Rich (Port Townsend WA), half-brother Lance (OK) and half-sister Katrina York (MO), many nieces, nephews, and cousins, including relatives through her birth mother, whom she found late in life. She will be missed by her beloved cat Clancy, a large group of former students, colleagues, and friends through Rogers, First Pres and Campfire who were also family to her. She is predeceased by her parents, Gen and Bill Carlson.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 25 at 1pm; all are welcome. Private graveside service to follow. Memorial donations in Nancy's honor may be made to First Presbyterian Church for the annual purchase of Bibles to present to the third graders.
