In Memory

Roxanne Mantz

Roxanne Mantz

From Val Day Rhodes:

Roxanne Mantz passed away May 17, 1980 from injuries sustained in a one vehicle accident in Ephrata, Washington.  She was born on March 21, 1964.  She was a Ferris High School Student and a member of the Ferris Future Farmers of America (FFA) and the Glenrose 4-H Club, and attended Lincoln Heights Congregational Church.  At the time of her death, she was survived by her immediate family (parents Robert and Betty and brother and sister-in-law, Rob and Mary) as well as numerous extended family members.  As a close friend, I fondly remember that Roxanne was:

  • incredibly kindhearted and caring with animals;
  • never too busy to stop and smell the roses (both literally and figuratively);
  • an avid connoisseur of chocolate milk; and
  • a sensitive and compassion friend.

For memorial contributions, it was very fitting that the Roxanne Mantz Memorial Fund for Animal Research was established at Washington State University.  Roxanne is buried at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Roxanne Mantz was one of my closest friends. She and I were classmates at Adams Elementary School, and we became fast friends. She remained one of my best friends until her death. Roxanne was only 16 years old when she died in a car accident.  I remember that day so clearly. It was the day of the Lilac/Torchlight Parade. I was told of her death when I returned from the parade, and I remember falling to my knees. That weekend the sky darkened in the middle of the day. I felt it was a sign from God. Later, ash fell from the sky--Mt. St. Helens had erupted. So many memorable events from that weekend, and the most memorable of all was the loss of my dear, dear friend. I remember the moment of silence while sitting in Mr. Morton's science class. I remember her funeral. I often wonder how her life would have been when I pass by her old home. Roxanne was so kind and gentle, qualities that aren't always seen in sophomore girls... I still miss you, Roxanne.  Until we meet again.....
