Glen Cloninger

CLONINGER,
Glen Albert

Glen was born July 28, 1944 in Spokane at Deaconess Hospital and passed away there on December 5, 2010 from complications following a minor medical procedure. His family was by his side. Glen is survived by his wife Pamela M. Cloninger; son Blake A. and wife Karen L. Cloninger of Spokane; daughters Brooke M. Cloninger of Spokane and Brittney H. Cloninger of Loma Linda University, CA; precious grandsons Coulter Glen Cloninger (9) and Bridger Walker Cloninger (5); mother-in-law Helen G. Briggs; brother-in-law Peter A. (Ann) Briggs, and brother Dale W. (Melissa) Cloninger. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Marguerite Cloninger, and father-in-law Henry A. Briggs. A lifelong Spokane resident, Glen attended Jefferson and Adams Elementary Schools and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1963. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture in 1968 from Montana State University, followed by a Master's Degree in Architecture. Glen established his own architectural firm, Glen A. Cloninger and Assoc. in 1971. He has left a lasting legacy in the Spokane and surrounding areas with his unique and celebrated architecture. His use of brick and stone to create beautiful architecture became a signature of his work. These buildings will be a lasting contribution to the beauty of the City. His projects have appeared in many publications. Glen was a hardworking and tenacious businessman who developed Tapio Office Center, known for its lavish landscaping and use of Aspen trees, which were his favorite, and Grapetree Village, a long fought-for mixed use office and retail center, a beautiful landmark on the South Side. Glen was a member and past president of the American Institute of Architects, Spokane Chapter, The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, A.F. & A.M. Master Mason, Spokane Club, Alumni Association and Board of Directors of Montana State University, Golden Bobcat Club, MSU Quarterback Club, AOPA Member and Student Pilot, member of Loma Linda University Dean's Circle, among many other affiliations. Glen's first priority was his family. He loved being at Coeur d'Alene Lake with all his family, boating, skiing, playing games and "working on sprinklers". His two grandsons were the delight of his life, working on Legos with Coulter and playing chess with Bridger, they enjoyed their weekly sleepovers at Grandpa's house. Glen loved fast boats, Corvettes, Harley Davidsons, airplanes, playing chess, and lately enjoyed daily coffee "discussions" with his buddies. His family would like to thank especially Tiffani Lee and the other nursing staff at Deaconess ICU for their kindness and caring.
